40S&W loaded to 1.2" AOL using CFE powder anyone try this? Results?

I've used Hodgdon's Clays for years with 40S&W to make major power factor. Loading 180g HP to 1.2 AOL I use 4.25 grains with no ill effects. But I'm looking to switch powders to Hodgdon's CFE and wondering if anyone has any load data for that powder and long loading with that bullet weight.

Thanks.

Why do you want to go to CFE (assuming you don't already have gobs of it)?  e3, N320 and Sport Pistol are much better choices.

Why are they better choices?

1 powder for several different cartridges, 9 and 40. Then Clays for 45 ACP.

The only pistol powder I now have is Clays (and one pound of CFE. 8 more pounds on the way).

You use less powder.  You get less recoil and noise.  For example, I use e3 for 9mm minor, 40 minor and major, and for my 45 bullseye loads.  If you like Clays, you can add Clay Dot to the list.

This weekend I’m going to chrono the following:

180gr Black Bullets (coated)

5.5gr CFE

1.192” COAL (close to your stated 1.2”)

Based on loads posted on this forum and on Hodgdon’s load data web page, I think this will give a high minor or possibly low major PF.  I’m aiming for 930-940 average fps.  I’ll tweak as needed and let you know my results.

Thanks. If I have the time to load some up before Friday (My day to go to the range) I will do the same with Extreme 180 CP and Montana Gold 180 HP.

IIRC Last time I did a test I used 5.8g of CFE. Yeah my note say I got 925 with 5.8 with a note to boost it by 1 tenth of a grain.

But I am actually using a worn barrel that I shot a bunch of Coated bullets in that started to wipe the rifling out of the barrel. Out of my other STI 40 I mad major no problem but that isn't the gun I like to shoot.
