G17fan
Hello, I am looking to add a magwell to my 1911. A few questions: Is having a magwell legal when shooting single stack? Which brand is best? Will my 1911 fit in the "box" if I add a magwell? Here is a pic of what I currently have.... Thanks...
G-ManBart
Did you try checking the rules for SS Division? They're here, Appendix D5: http://www.uspsa.org/rules/2010HandgunRulesProof3web.pdf Nobody can say whether your gun will fit...you'll have to either build/borrow/buy a box, or trace the dimensions carefully on cardboard, and put your pistol in the lines. You can find the dimensions for the box, in Appendix 5D from above. Normally, it's the mag basepad, not the magwell, that causes a problem. If you'd searched on "magwell" in this section, you would have found the most recent, nearly identical thread, from two months ago here: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=125854&view=findpost&p=1420909 You would have also found the mother of all SS magwell threads here: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=57062&view=findpost&p=662106 And then you'd have found a whole bunch of basically identical threads, many of which would be better off being in one place, but lots of folks don't want to follow the guidelines, so that doesn't happen. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=112759&view=findpost&p=1279389 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=99708&view=findpost&p=1139278 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=101858&view=findpost&p=1160515 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=117049&view=findpost&p=1326686 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=112987&view=findpost&p=1281859 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=99708&view=findpost&p=1139278 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=69888&view=findpost&p=808795 http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=59131&view=findpost&p=687182 Edited May 28, 2011 by G-ManBart
EkuJustice
Mag well is legal in SS. You need to check for yourself to double check the fit. My SS fits with the Techwell XT magwell. The techwell allows you to use a polymer MSH to save weight. Make sure you check it with the mags as they are usually the problem. The 47de mags usually need a little shaved off the front of them

G17fan
Thank you everyone for the replys. I think I will go with the S&A version. I will change the grips to the full size to fit the new magwell.
justmike
I put a S&A on mine with a set of VZ Operator II's. They fit the magwell perfect and provide a great grip surface. Don't forget to get the parts to convert away from the ILS.

So I will need to purchase the mainspring housing with magwell as well as mainspring housing internals? Do you know if there is a "kit" for these internal parts? Again, thanks. justmike
The S&A magwell comes attached to a new mainspring housing. To remove the ILS from my Springfield Loaded I used: 1. S&A magwell with checkered mainspring housing 2. Ed Brown 19lbs competition mainspring 3. mainspring cap 4. cap pin 5. retaining pin All parts came from Brownells and took a rookie about 20min to do the job (with the help of YOUTUBE)
Mike Dame
in my mind S&A is the only way to go for a single stack.
