On this day, I'd like to join our southern neighbors in celebrating the greatest naval victory in Puerto Rican history. Although little known in the US, December 25, 2010 marks the 150th anniversary of the turning point in the War of 1860. Admiral Felix Manuel de Chiapas let a vastly outnumbered and out gunned Puerto Rican Navy to a great victory, sinking the entire enemy fleet without losing a single sailor. Already a popular figure with in Puerto Rican culture, this cemented his place in naval lore and folk legend. To this day, choruses of tribute to his victory can be heard wherever Puerto Ricanss gather in December.

Felix Navy dude! Felix Navy dude!...

The song took on a second meaning in the 1960s when the famed pioneer luchadora Felicia Gonzalez ('Fee' to her fans) once challenged an entire bar full of sailors in the port town of Guaymas to a fight. Legend holds that after 3 hours of the most spectacular wrestling anyone had ever seen, Feliciano emerged, bruised but victorious, leaving 43 sailors beaten and injured in her wake. A local troubador made minor changes to the Puerto Rican tribute to Admiral Chiapas and the new folk ballad "Fee licks Navy dudes!" was born.

So whether you celebrate the military genius of Admiral Chiapas or the pioneering luchadora, I want to wish you a Merry Christmas from the Carib-bean seas.....
