  1. Fireant,

Think mud wrestling without the hot babes

    Alan

    oooh

    Desert like conditions Sat.

    Tropical monsoon like Sun.

kinda like Richmond....If you don't like the weather just stick around for a day, or two.

Not looking forward to the Carolina Cup tomorrow either (weather wise) mid 90's, and humid <_<

Suppose to be a little better Sunday though.

  2. Cool, any chance you're going to do a photo album on the USPSA web page?

    Naw, not me.

Sorry, I may have misinterpreted your post. Trust me, I'm not the gentleman you speak of. I think I saw the young man your talking about though. These are just a few shots I took before I shot Sat. p.m.

  3. Are you still using this bag? Has it held up?

SDM, you can check mine out soon. Just picked one up yesterday :goof:

I really like all the seperate pockets of the 5.11

It seems plenty rigid, with ample room B)

It is imported though. I guess that explains the price.

Nothing wrong with my I-Shot Pro. It was just getting tight

  4. Only my 3rd match (IDPA crossover), and despite the desert like conditions Sat p.m. I loved it! I had way too many MIKES, and No-shoots though. But, I was plenty slow to make up for them

I thought the stages were outstanding. My favorite being stage 4. Running, close shots, long shots, little bit of steel, swingers, etc.

    Stage 8 was a killer!

Had the pleasure of watching a 13 yr. old clean stage 9 (aka stage 3-A) Steely Speed VII in 3.99 (Limited) :surprise: . Y'all watch Sonny as he will be a force to be reckoned with soon. Great kid too.

Thanks to all....Tino, and staff, the RO's, etc, and I'll see you again at your local matches there. BTW there's a lot of you I have yet to meet, and or, put a name to a face, but I hope to be around often.

    Bill

  5. Chrono report at the Va/Md Sectionals.

Temp. 90 deg., and sunny. Guessing about 70% humidity. 3:45 p.m.

    G35 - factory barrel

    Win brass

    180 gr. Masterblaster

    4.7 grs. 231

    Fed 100 primer

    1.145" - 1.150" oal

The pulled MB weighed 176.4 grs. <_< 7 shot's recorded with a low of 900fps, and a high of 943. Came in at an avg. PF of 165.87 :surprise:

Don't know why the large Deviation. No bullet setback experienced. I'm not tarring the coating when seating, or crimping. Crimping to .422". Powder charge is very consistent.

Guess I have a somewhat slow barrel too.

Even with the large SD this load is very accurate for me, with very little smoke. Will up it to 5.0grs., and try to borrow a chrono.

  6. I too had a PI9134L (Loaded 9mm) that would not group. Sent it back to SA, and D. Williams installed a new bushing. It helped, but there were other things I didn't like about it. IMO a really loose fit gun. He said it was to specs. I no longer have it. It's a shame having to put time, and money into a new gun like that just to have it shoot well (i.e. new barrels, bushings, welding, re-fitting, tightening slides/frame, etc.)

I agree with the other's options. Least expensive I guess would be to have it welded, and re-fit.

I would look hard at the Trojan from STI

  7. Not too bad. I had the Tru-grips on before I got the magwell. I just had to manipulate the bottom a bit. I think you may need to trim the bottom of the Tru-grips if your installing with an excising magwell.

  8. Not much help here since I'm using 231 under 147gr. Masterblasters. FWIW though I'm using 3.5 to 3.6 grs. at an oal of 1.145 to 1.150" max.

I went with 231 in hope of a less Smokey load. It's not too bad, and has yet to bother me in a match.

Very nice little load, with a mild, vertical recoil.

BTW, this is through a stock G17 barrel also. Sorry I have no Crono results.

    Good luck

  9. I've gone through that stage, and will likely go through it again. As Steve says, practice speed, but don't think speed in a match. When you plateau and make the decision to improve, you have to restrict the speed to training; like a gambler who hits an inside straight you might get lucky and shred a stage, then have that speed incorrectly stuck in your head as "your" speed.

I don't use the timer much when practicing draws, mag changes, etc. I do them as fast as I can, what else is there? But one thing I've found the timer very helpful for is to repeatedly prove to myself that the difference between me going at warp speed and shooting the sights properly is minimal. Your speed is your speed, and you might as well let it do its thing while you concentrate on the one thing you can alter: when you break the shot. Quality of sight picture is the only thought you can keep in your head.

    H.

    Very well said Sir

  10. C'mon guys...

    Here's the deal:

Train for speed in practice and forget about it at the match. FORGET ABOUT IT.

    FUHGEDDABAHDIT.

If you apply any notion of speed in a match, your idiot conscios brain is now in charge, denying your subconscious skills the opportunity to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

Shoot alphas. If you are slower than than you wish to be, train more.

At the match, forget about speed.

    Please.

    SA

Ya know......It has taken me a little while to figure this out. I'm still somewhat of a newbie. When I first started (last August) trying to learn and be safe I was smooth, and accurate.

Lately I have been shooting too fast. I has been reflected in my scores, and placement among my fellow competitors. Dropping too many points.

I am trying very hard now to self discipline myself to see the front sight when I need to, with a good follow through, and calling my shoots. In other words.....To slow down when I need to, to make good hits.

It's like I picked up a bad habit, and am now trying to relearn the proper technique.

You hit the nail on the head Mr. Anderson.....regarding my biggest problem I feel right now.

Thanks for helping to confirm my weakening conscious mind. I guess what you said is the main thing I need to do to become a more disciplined shooter.

    Anymore pointers?

    Thanks

  11. Thanks to all.

I just got back from the range, and 4.6 grs. of 231 under the 180gr. Masterblaster's did very well. Very accurate, and softer then my current load (4.7grs. TG, 180gr. Zero JHP)

It was a little smoky. Only time will tell how I come to terms with it. One thing I liked about it was the recoil was very vertical. Real easy to track the front sight.

  12. I use VV320 and MB 200gr for my STI and I like it alot but I load them long and they wont work in your glocks. The other problem with VV is the only shop in this area that sells the stuff is Green Top and its $28/lbs. A couple of guys with suppressors at Dominion want to order some in bulk so I'll let you know and if you want some to try out I'll hook you up.

Thanks buddy. I didn't know you shot the good high $ stuff  No wonder you're beating me :P

Hey I've gotta use some excuse!

    Shootin Sat.?

  13. Thanks. I'll try TG, and 231.

I guess the reason I'm concerned about excessive smoke is last year in the Va. State I shot a stage with the sun just above the targets, and had to wait for the smoke to clear a little for my follow up shots. It was bad. This was with a Zero jacketed TC with an expossed lead base though.

    Don't want that again

  14. With the cost of jacketed having jumped up I've ordered Masterbalaster's to try in 40, and 9.

I've been using Titegroup with good results for jacketed, but I understand it smokes a lot with coated bullets.

I have some 231 I'm going to try.

What's your favorite powder for the "Black Bullets" in 40 major, and why?

    Thanks, Bill

  15. I'll give the counter argument...with my "internet knowledge".

Since the days that this forum started, 231 has been reported to not only be temperature sensitive, but also position sensitive. Meaning that shortening the OAL a little (bullet setback) can produce lots of extra pressure.

40 at major is a high pressure round to start with. With so many other powders out there that work well...I never bothered to try my luck with 231 in 40 at Major.

I'll see Flex's internet knowledge and raise it by first hand experience. I used 231 for both 9mm and .40 for the first few years I was shooting. It is temperature sensitive losing at least 20-40 fps for every 10-15 degrees cooler in ambient temp. I nearly went sub-minor at the 93 Ltd Nationals. Throw 30 rounds in the freezer and transport them in a cooler to the range. Run them over the chrono versus "room" temperature ammo and you'll see what I mean.

I certinly have no reason to doubt you, nor Flexmoney. I'm starting with 231 because I have some on hand, and feel it's the best choice out of what I have.

Yesterday I was going to start a new topic, "Best powder for Moly/Polymer coated 40's". What's your favorite, and why? Looking for something consistant, clean, and non-smokey.

    What do you guy's like?

    Thanks

  16. 231 works great with 180 grain moly-coated bullets for major PF. I'm getting 170 PF at 4.6 grains out of my son's G22. This is 0.4 grains below book max, lots of headroom. Accurate, consistent, and shoots soft. Less smoke that TG.

Good timing with your reply! I just bought some 180gr Masterblasters to try. The cost of jacketed has really gone up.

I'm going to try 231 with them. mainly because I've heard that they (moly/poly) coated bullets do smoke a lot with TG.

    Thanks

    Bill:

For your G17,I suggest that you try 3.9gr/Unique with the 147gr CMJ bullet.

    PF = 138.17

    Velocity = 939.9fps.

It gives a nice push instead of a snap.

RePete, I used Unique years ago and switched to Bullseye, then to 231. I liked 231 better. I don't remember why, but I did. Maybe because it was a little cleaner or something

This was also in a 45 though at low velocities.

    Thanks

  17. Hey Guys,

I am the friend bill is refering to. I probably should elaborate on this some. What i was trying to say was that i am shooting better groups with 115 vs 147 because i am obtaining a quicker sight picture with the lighter stuff. The gun shoots fine with either ammo.

I have shot alot of dannys ammo and currently have an order in route. this should fix my problem, as atlanta arms ammo crono's a lot less in velocity than the federal 147 does.

I have heard the same comment from alot of guys about this very same thing. The 115's are moving the slide alot quicker there for i am getting back on target quicker. Does this make sense?. I really can't tell any differance in felt recoil between the two, so i am going to shoot the 115's till dannys ammo gets here.

    Thanks for the help guys.

    luxor,

I hope you don't mind me posting, or asking about your situation here. These guy's are good, and can help with a lot of different problems. I didn't know you'd be here.

    Take'er away, and good luck

Did you get the directions to Fredericksburg I sent?

  18. Tell him to send me a few thousand rounds of each to test in my G34.

    Will do ;)

Seriously, if he shoots better with the 115's...he should shoot the 115's.

Yep. I guess if he's going to shoot factory, he'll need to test different brands and styles.

In the meantime, shoot what works.

I'm guessing his barrel may not like the 147's above supersonic vel. That's why I suggested he try them in his G17. Does that make any sense, or am I way off

  19. He needs to learn to reload the 147 gr bullets or buy the 147 gr load from Atlanta Arms. A 147 gr bullet at 875 fps is way softer than factory 115.

Agreed. I told him that at the same PF the recoil would be different. With 115's being sharper. I also told him that there is a big difference between a 147 @ 148PF as opposed to say 130PF.

He is thinking about reloading, and asking questions, which is good.

Until then, I'll suggest he try AA's 147's.

    Thanks

  20. Can any of you make suggestions for my friend?

    Here is his question

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a question, maybe you can answer. As you know i am using the glock

    34. I have a 12# recoil spring and the usual parts that came with it. ie

3.5# connector ect.... I shoot a 147 grain subsonic round from federal.

In rencent tests i have found that i am getting better groups with plain

old 115 grain box ammo than i am with the 147 grain. I am not sure if the

recoil between the two rounds is really that different. In general i should

be doing better with the 147 grain stuff because there should be less

recoil. but this is not the case.

Any ideas why this is? I have cronographed the ammo and the 147 grain "

subsonic " round is really not subsonic out of my g34. Its comming out at

    about 1007-1011 fps.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks guys. I made a few suggestions to him (try stock spring setup, see how they do out of his G17, etc.), but I wanted to see what you guys thought.

  21. TITEGROUP TITEGROUP TITEGROUP :D

Why even bother to try something else?

    b/c N310 and N320 are softer and cleaner ;):D

Tightgroup... the only problem I ever had with it was downloading to 125 PF groups would open up some due to low volume. anything I have tried 145pf and up seemed to work fine.

That is my experience also. TG is very erratic at low PF in 40. TG loves pressure.

Odd. My 40 minor load with TG groups very well. Sub 1.5" at 25 with stock Glock barrel.

I'm sticking with TG in my 40. My G35 has been turned into my Limited gun.

I did pick up a G17 for IDPA, and Production. I'll probably use TG for that too. I'm using Zero JHP's in my 9 right now. I hear that TG smokes a lot with the "Black Bullets", and 231 does well (better) with them. I may try 231 with coated lead when the cost of jacketed get's too high

    Thanks to all.

    Bill
