  1. Anyone have any thoughts about Tucson, AZ? Headed there tomorrow for an interview.

    I'm not in Tucson, I'm SE of Phx. Summers are HOT, but the other 8 months of the year make it worthwhile. Shooting ranges/clubs/competitions everywhere - if you're into that. I ride my motorcycle 12 months per year. Great hiking/hunting/boating/4 wheelin'. Permit-less carry. No snow, unless you want to see it. Easy drive to Vegas or Laughlin. Kalifornication isn't too away if you must go there. Close to Utah/New Mexico/Texas, and Mexico. I don't know anything about the job market - I retired and moved here from the north-east. Oh, and summers are HOT. Drink lots of water.

  2. Just got an ACCU shadow and I'm finding that the ambi safety on it is being engaged by my firing hand when I'm drawing. What safeties do you guys like? I know there's lots of options out there.

    Trigger finger under one safety - thumb on top of the other. You should be disengaging the safety on the draw (if engaged when holstered) or holding it down (riding it) with your strong thumb.

  3. Guys. I have been reloading with a 550 for 15 years. I am well aware of their customer service. I just replaced it with a 650. Yes I am reloading .308 rounds. Probably have reloaded 5,000 rounds. And No I am not moving the handle too fast. Powder measure in in the correct way. Double checked today. No powder residue in powder die. Cases lubed doesn't matter. It shouldn't. Had no issues on the 550 like this.

    If case lube gets inside the mouth of the case, powder will stick to it, but after 15 yrs you already know this.

  4. You have the stock in your posesion, why not try it out and see if you like it. Your personal opinions will be far more valuable to you than the opinion of some dude on the Internet. A stock is a personal fit item anyway, much like a pair of shoes, do you want what's in fashion or what feels good? My offer to trade for cookies still stands, I like the UBR stock, and the Luth looks like it would also adjust well to my needs.

    Stop trying to confuse people with logic. Why would anyone want to use a product they have in hand rather than ask strangers for opinions on forums? I like cookies too.

  5. How can a gun that meets the requirements of a division give the competitor an advantage. Is USPSA saying that 'yes both X & Y guns are legal in that division, but Y is a better gun, so no you can't use it?

    This is how it can give the competitor an advantage: Let's say you are shooting production with a stock G17 4.5in. Your gun goes down and you have a backup (XDm-9 4.5, G17, M&P9...whatever) with a 2.5 lb trigger, heavier guide rod, fibers, stippling and lots of internal work that would still be deemed production legal. 90% of the time, the RM is going to let you switch...BUT, he does not have to in this instance because of the upgrades of your BU gun vs. the stock plain version of the original pistol you began with. So, no...Y is not considered a "better gun", but "a gun that gives a competitive advantage" because of the mods.

    But anyone else using a similar gun in the same competition would also have a competitive advantage, yet that's OK? Divisions aren't further broken down by type or number of mods to the gun. Either the gun is legal for the division, or it isn't.

    Using your logic, I could start a match with my bone stock Glock 17 but in the event of a breakdown, would not be able to finish with my CZ SP01 Custom. But if I started with the CZ you would allow me to finish with the Glock? You don't see a problem with that?

    This might make it easier to think about. The rule isn't about what anybody else is using in the match, it's about what you're using. If you start with a less advantageous gun (e.g., stock Glock/XD/M&P) and then switch to a CZ 75 Target Shadow, that's going to produce a competitive advantage *for you*. I would think the shooter would have wanted to start with the better gun, so why didn't he? The shooter chooses the equipment, and it's not considered fair to switch to better stuff later.

    So it's the gun, not the shooter that makes a difference in competition? Who's definition of 'better stuff' are we using? A lot of Glock fans would disagree with my example.

    Broken gun - check

    Replacement gun on approved list - check

    Load and make ready.

  6. My understanding of the "competitive advantage" bit was to prevent me from say, shooting a 5" on the hoser stage, and then having it "break" and switching to a 6" for the stage with 30 yard partials, and then switching back for another close stage, etc.

    I wouldn't do it, but they don't make someone use the same club across the entire course for golf... if someone thought that was an advantage I wouldn't have an issue with them doing that, but I can see how that could be construed as competitive advantage.

    If your gun 'broke' how would you be switching back to it? How would you explain that to the RM? How would you not get DQ'd under 10.6.1?

  7. I check the powder weight about every 15 rounds or so. I pull the case from station 3, dump the charge into my scale pan, weigh it and put it back into the case if its right, put it back in station 3 and Insert a bullet and continue on. Its hardly ever off more than a tenth either way.

    Every 15 rounds? I check mine every (7000gr x 8lbs = 56,000gr divided by 4.1gr per round = 13,585) ...every 13000 rounds, give or take a few hundred.

    But seriously.......I check mine every October, because June through September is way too hot to work in the garage. I shoot about 6K per year.

  8. No ruling needed. There's the blanket statement in the Appendix D4 that says if something is not explicitly allowed, then it's not allowed.

    <devils advocate>

    D4.21.4 For semi-automatic Production guns, grip tape, grip sleeves, checkering, stippling or other texture may only be applied in the areas shown in appendix E4. Glue and grit is considered the same as stippling.

    Following that logic, since the rulebook only shows grip tape or stippling on the left side, then that means you aren't allowed to put grip tape or stippling on the right side. :)

    </devils advocate>

    Seriously, though, a reasonable person would expect the areas to be mirrored on both sides.

    So I need to cut my tape to go around an imaginary slide release. OK.

  9. How can a gun that meets the requirements of a division give the competitor an advantage. Is USPSA saying that 'yes both X & Y guns are legal in that division, but Y is a better gun, so no you can't use it?

  10. I don't know about IPSC but or USPSA you can not "color outside the lines" -- on either side ...

    I believe that is why the OP asked the question. The appendix illustration does not show both sides of the gun, only the left side of two different guns. How far forward can you go on the right side?

    Not trying to be clever but why would you think the dimensions would be different on the other side of the grip?

    On the left side of the pictured Glock the tape has been cut around the slide release. On the right side there is no such control. Can grip tape be applied as far forward as a vertical line parallel to the front strap?

  11. Just took a peek at my 550 case feeder and it's actually pretty well cut and dried. I recommend you take it apart and make sure there's nothing in the spring assy to restrict plunger travel like a spent primer or crud buildup in the guide and check the tightness of the bolt / condition of the roller bearings that follow the cam. Not a whole lot else to cause trouble. Let us know what you come up with.

    Ron

    I just took mine apart to clean the crud out of the spring assembly & plunger. I usually clean it out once per year. I bought mine when they first came out as well in 2006.

  12. I'm seriously considering having cz customs make a sp-01 shadow custom 2014 for me in the near future, anything it should have them add on over what the standard custom 2014 work covers?

    Nope. You could spend extra $$$ for the Accu bushing & fitted barrel, but IMHO save the money - it's an excellent gun the way it is.
