  1. What an unnecessary amount of judgement. First, I've already identified the problem. Mag springs were righteously f*#ked, so $100 and my match mags will be set up with new followers and springs. And have you ever tried marking your mags with sharpies? Wipes right off every time I've done it. Doesn't even last through dry fire. Paint pen works the best, but like I've already said, mine ran dry. How dare I not keep them numbered 24/7. No I don't ONLY use 2 mags, but these particular two are set up identically. Not everyone feels like going around and scratching the equipment they bought.
  2. I understand most parts are going to require minor fitting/deburring, but every part I’ve used so far has been drop in. Slide stop, extractor, firing pin. I’d expect to have to remove a bit of material on a “drop in” trigger because it’s my understanding they’re very slightly oversized, but that’s nothing some diamond files can’t take care of.
  3. Gotcha, I looked at some pictures I had that show the inside of the grip and the trigger bow, doesn’t look like I have any tab cutouts. So I’ll probably be picking up an adjustable flat trigger if I can find one.
  4. Might be embarrassing but I didn't know any better at the time, but I had the gun cerakoted because the factory finish is meh, and the gunsmith cerakoted all my internals too. That might be great because maybe now it'll show me exactly where I need to polish, or it'll be a pain in the ass to try to get it all off, I just don't know yet. I've heard the factory parts are meh and prone to breaking, but that might just be brand bashing. How do I adjust the pre travel? I've already adjusted the overtravel using the set screw. I think ideally, I'd like to be around 1.5-2 lbs, but I'd have to feel what the stock internals all polished up feel like before dropping $250 on a fancy ignition system.
  5. Handled a buddys custom built 2011 and holy crap, his trigger was pulled by the time mine was done with the take up. I've been enlightened and feel semi confident enough to put in some drop in parts. This gun is pretty similar to a para p-16, and takes para/sti mags, I'm just not sure what trigger parts it takes? Wanting to drop the pull down a couple pounds, and I want to grab a flat trigger if I can. I'm just not sure what trigger/hammer/sear/disconnector I should get, whether I should get a 1911 or 2011 type package, and what kind of pull reduction I can realistically expect with drop in parts/minor fitting. I know BakerJD did some trigger work to his so if you're around I'd love to hear from you!
  6. My MBX mags (not causing problems currently) are around 0.385 in the back and I believe 0.390 at the front, however the factory mags I was using the extended base pads were closer to 0.350 rear and 0.370 in the front. That sound like enough to cause problems?
  7. I'm running two magazines that are set up identically and my paint pen has died so they're not numbered. I can't say for certain, but I suspect that it was the same mag. I'll watch the atlas video and check my mag dimensions. Are the dimensions meant for 9mm mags the same as 40? When I had it cerakoted I had to take some tension out of the extractor so I know it's not too tight, I was thinking it may have loosened up too much. I'll give it a good cleaning and check tension. anyone here have any thoughts on STI mag spacers to take up extra room in the back of the mag? Supposedly helps with the shorter factory ammo, just what I was told by some other local shooters.
  8. Alright so it’s kinda hard to describe, but now at two or three matches I’ve had a malfunction where the round gets ejected, a new one is picked up but instead of being chambered, I’m assuming the note hits the top of the barrel and then the slide slams on the side of the case. Is this my extractor losing too much tension? the gun is a RIA 1911 A2 hi cap, in 40. I’ve now ran two different kinds of ammo and had it happen. Guys at my local match suspect my factory ammo may be loaded too short for its liking, so I’m gonna be getting some reloads with a longer OAL and seeing if it runs those. Just curious if there’s anything obvious I’m missing here before it goes to a gun smith. edit: a friend described it well, it presents and basically looks the same as a stove piped round. Except it’s a live round that’s stuck there, and the previous round ejected fine. https://imgur.com/a/hSPgDYk there’s a reference pic to the rounds that got slammed on.
  9. I didn’t get them with the competition style followers, I got them with the slide lock followers sadly. Had I known what I do now, I would’ve ordered comp style right away but oh well. Gonna be swapping all my followers soon, just not sure what brand I’m gonna go with. I already had to clean up my mbx followers just to get them to run right. Looking at grams guts, but dunno if I really want the springs too.
  10. https://imgur.com/a/FwgIMqn Ordered the TF base pads on Wednesday, got them today. Great shipping!! Anyways, they fit and work great. Easy to install although they didn’t come with the hex key, oh well. Using the stock factory springs they take capacity from 16 to 19. I can FIT 20 in them, but that makes it extremely hard to get the mag into the gun. The spring may weaken up a bit more and 20 will be feasible but we’ll see. As is, I get one extra round in these than I do my MBX mags. And if I played with my springs and followers (that’s next) I could probably get 21 reloadable. The number 4 mag has the Arredondo +2 base pad on it, and 18 rounds is nice, I was always worried about cracking the plastic so the all aluminum ones feel much nicer and heftier. Hope this helps you make your decision!
  11. I'm using MBX mags in my RIA limited gun, and I'm looking to change over to competition style non locking followers. MBX sells these on their website directly but my last set of followers from them gave me reliability issues, so I'm wondering what other followers would work? I'm assuming most STI followers would, I was looking at the TTI super thin ones and I can just dremel away the lip a bit until it doesnt lock open with one round left. Any input would be great!
  12. Thank you! You've been such a great source of info since I've taken ownership of my RIA
  13. Good to know! I thought the mag release needed to be changed to run STI mags?
  14. thats exactly my thoughts. I have some arredondo plastic basepads and they give me +2 but they feel pretty cheap and my spring/follower is jammed in the bottom of one of them right now. I'm hoping the TF will run a bit smoother and be more durable when dropped.
  15. I have a RIA pro match ultra in 40 with two of the factory mags and two MBX mags. The taylor freelance aluminum basepads show that they bring the factory mags to 140mm and fit +4 in 9mm and +2 in 40. I want to try them but don't want to order them without knowing if they'd work because of the restocking fee, so I'm wondering if anyone else here is using them in their RIA?
  16. So I've enjoyed these posts because they make me feel like less of an idiot at my matches. Well yesterday I made a TON of small screw ups - rushed stage walk through and blasted a no shoot I didn't see, pointed out a stage was virginia count and then still took two make up shots out of pure habit, etc. Well on my last stage of the day I was the first shooter up, I keep a full mag in my back pocket as a barny mag and then my start mag on a magnet and two mags in their pouches. Shooting limited I pretty much never reach for that third mag. Well I was struggling to hit the steel plates/swingers and took way too many shots, so as I was running to the last array I reloaded and when I got there I was able to fire one round then nothing. went through the typical TRB and nothing, did it again before I decided I had to drop that mag and reach for my initial barny mag in the back pocket. Absolutely murdered my time on that last stage. Turns out my spring and follower somehow snagged on my aftermarket base pad (maybe loaded one extra round too many?) so my bullets were just flopping around inside.
  17. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks having to do extra work on an MBX mag to get it to be reliable is ridiculous for how much they cost. At this point I don't even want to really support the company anymore. Would it really be so hard for them to "condition" the mag themselves before they send it out, or check their damn followers to see if they're still rough. Don't think I'm going to be buying any more mags from them.
  18. We’ll just took one of them apart and the edges look awful considering I paid $150 per mag. The pictures are bigger than what’s allowed so here’s an Imgur link. https://imgur.com/a/tZPVelD gonna run over the edges with a bit of sandpaper, clean the tubes again, and then recheck.
  19. mags were brand new (ordered straight from the website) so they shouldn't have been messed with. I'm going to sand the edges of the followers just a tad and leave em loaded for a while. Worst case scenario I'll just order some new springs/followers.
  20. Thanks for the info! I looked on the website and didn't see anything in regards to different generations of followers. For the RIA they only offer the 9 and 40 in slide lock and non slide lock configs. Nothing said about gen 1 or 2. Really what I've been trying to determine is whether I can get away with just new followers, or if I need new springs too. I'll sand the edges of my followers a bit and see if that helps. Basically everyone here reccomended MBX mags as they are apparently no fuss and just run reliably. I currently beg to differ, but mine haven't needed any tuning yet like an STI mag, and the competition style followers don't lock the slide back without having to modify the slide stop, so I do like that.
  21. where can I find which is the correct gen follower?
  22. I dont believe so, I don't remember getting any sort of instructions on how to condition them.
  23. two matches ago was a classifier in the mud and gunk got in them, but ive taken them apart and cleaned them since then.
  24. I checked grams website and all I saw under the STI and para options were springs and followers for 9mm. Am I missing something?
  25. So I've noticed this in dry fire and messing with my mags, when I push rounds out of them the next round feeds up but slowly. In my most recent competition this bit me in the ass because I pulled the trigger, got no bang, and thought there was a different problem and instinctively went to reload instead of TRB to get another round into the chamber. I'm using the 141.25mm mags for a 40 RIA 1911. Stock guts, im thinking about ordering another set of springs and their competition followers for hopefully 20 rounds reloadable (i have the slide lock version and only get 18) however I'm wondering what causes the bullets to rise so slowly, and if the followers/springs are salvageable to use as backups or if they're just trashed after ~5 competitions. Any other followers/spring combos reccomended that dont need any mods to work fine?
