  1. Ok, I'm going to ask a stupid question.

What is the reasoning behind prohibiting competitors from changing sites during a match?

I'm not a professional rifleman, not military or law enforcement but if I were, wouldn't I equip my gun based on the anticipate environment I was going into? If I'm going to clear a house or work the streets of a crowed city, I would want an Eotech.

If my job is to support others by taking a position on the perimeter or dealing with other distant threats, I'd use a scope with low to moderate magnification.

If I'm going to be a sniper, use a sniper scope.

And.. to and from assignment, I would choose whichever aiming system was best and carry the other with me.

So.. given the quality of removable mounts now that permit a return to zero, why not permit competitors to select the best sight for the stage they will shoot?

    Am I crazy??

I'm asking because I put a generic tube dot on top of my 2x7 scope today using the ARMS 22 tactical scope ring rail and it was goofy high. Caused me to raise my head up off the stock for the tube dot which will be used for 85-95% of my shots.

    And the answer is....

  2. I just spoke to Todd over at Poly-choke. He says they just completed the screw on poly choke for the Saiga and now (like today) have them available. Apparently the prior ones were perm attached. I got one with the slots for $110 delivered.

Now if I just had a gun.

I don't want anyone calling and bothering Tony until he finishes my gun.

  3. The last time I shot 3 gun in a competitive way, we loaded the gun from the muzzle.

I'm setting up a new rifle and trying to balance the need for speed with the need for magnification / barrel needed for long shots. Based on your experiences in the last year or so at major matches, what distance shooting should I expect to encounter and what weight will it carry in the overall match?

I remember back 12 to 15 years ago I shot (either a regional or national 3 gun match in Glenrose, TX) and we had to drop plates out at 350 yds. My .223 made them wiggle/wobble and the guy shooting the .308 next to me made them fly. Back then I had a standard 20" barrel with a 1.5x6 Burris.

  4. Spaceghost,

With my usual powers of observation, I finally noticed you are also in the Houston area so clicked on your profile to see if you were someone I know. I was going to ask who you use for a gunsmith.

Then dang, I saw your special interests, "Making road kill marionettes for the orphans." This I gotta share with friends. :D

    It helped make my weekend.

    Bill

Glad you liked that.. the key is getting to the critters before they stiffen up too much.

I will PM you about gunsmiths.

  5. I hear-ya Spd522..

I wouldn't think you would need a very pronounced protrusion, say 5/8 of an inch. Just something to catch your finger so you don't have to get a friction hold on both sides of the slide.

As far as sweeping, it wouldn't be worse than trying to rack the slide using the front cocking serrations.

I would suggest bringing the racker back further toward the ejection port but 1. you need a certain distance to accomodate the travel in the slide and 2. the metal just ahead of the barrel hood probably isn't thick enough to dovetail.

  6. Ok.. perhaps this is just crazy talk.. (related to the bloody mary's I was drinking and the late hour) but what about putting a short racker further up, in front of the ejection port. True, I've never seen anyone do it.. and I suppose you might run into a problem somewhere with a barricade or port but its an idea. You could have it feed into the front sight dovetail.

There, I'm done thinking outside of the box...

  7. Seeing the other thread about getting the CR to fit the STI made me want to ask this question...

Could someone with the CR setup for a 1911/Para send me a pic of the shim setup or tell me what they have installed? :)

I bought the version for an XD. I think it is essentially the standard holster without any shims. All you do is adjust the white screw and set the muzzle platform.

Knowing that I might later use it for another gun.. which I am.. I bought the spare parts kit which includes a bunch of shims.. but I have no idea what the standard arrangement of shims / parts are on the left side.

I would check with my friends.. but sadly I have few :( Yeah whatever, some people call it being anti-social.. I don't care, who needs them

  8. Flatland,

Thank you! I appreciate your getting the photos taken and up so quick.

So I take it you have to cut the left side thumb safety to clear the mount and either ditch the grips or shorten the the left panel to clear the mount.

I can't believe your gun is such a safe queen.. are you sure the mount can hold up to real use?? :P

  9. Flatland,

Any chance you could post a picture of your gun with the Hiett mounted.

I just found out my Serendipity is on backorder..

Now I'm thinking of a slideride on a mount. Of course, the Hiett is $100 which is a chunk of change

I want something that will be low to the slide.

    Thanks!

  10. 1. Warp... Good suggestion. I just ordered a comp and some other small parts from Geo last week.. I would have asked about the head but I hadn't confronted the Ed Brown issue at that point. I might give him a call back.

    2. Scott... I didn't ask.. but my gunsmith is Eddie Jimenia and he is well known around here and he is also a good friend and he doesn't do things unless he has a reason. I'm going to guess it is either because he feels stock rods are undersized or because he wants to make it longer than a typical 5" He also makes his own reverse plugs.

    Thanks for the input guys..

  11. If I weld up two mags I will likely use Mec Gar mags as they are less expensive. Why do you suggest using a Para lower?

Is there a difference in the 9mm vs .38S Para mags? What I have ordered for the gun are 4 standard length Para 9mm mags.

  12. I'm getting some parts together for a gun and my gunsmith asked me to get an Ed Brown guide rod head. He intends on making is own rod to the proper length. Brownells dropped this part and a call to Ed Brown was answered with 'we don't produce just the head for sale any longer'

Anyone know of another company that just sells the head? I assume I can just order a rod just separate the head from the rod if I have to...

BTW.. no rod and head jokes!

  13. ihavepickles,

Thanks, that is a very good explanation and I'm going through the same type decision process as John. I think Pharaoh's point of the price of brass and reduced reloads might sway me to the 9mm side however.

The only other deciding issue pertains to the steel that you assumed we knocked down in the classifier... I hate standing there thinking did I hit it square, should I call for a calibration...
