Thinking about a Hocho with 3 barrels: a 40s&w (if i need to go limited),  a 1 port 9mm and a 3 port 9mm major.   Since it is so easy to swap barrels, I am wondering if a guy could shoot 9 major for matches with the 3 port barrel and then swap in the 1 port barrel and have a decent PF load for practice sessions that would feel close to the same as the 9 major load.  Maybe be able to run coated bullets for practice in regular 9mm to and JHP for 9 major loads.  I am still shooting carry ops and have very little experience with comped pistols but it seems like it is feasible.   Any input from more experienced open shooters, specifically Honcho shooters??

Yep. you could certainly do that. Like sarge i think said it wont feel exactly the same. But it would be a bit cheaper for you to shoot 9 minor as opposed to major.

And you could use that to shoot steel challenge and what not.

Ive shot a ton of 9major and switched to 38 sc pretty much now.

if you have any other questions let me know! If you were in the benning area id let you shoot mine for a match and see how you like it!

  2. I know someone that has a Honcho and another custom gun, Carne Customs.  I saw him shoot both platforms, he claims that the Carne shoots flatter due to poppa holes on the barrel and slide.  Not sure if that's purely based on bias or "feel" but judging by several videos that I've seen it seems that the Honcho is a flatter shooting platform. But at the end of the day I guess it all boils down to personal preference.  I don't doubt that a lot of research, engineering, testing etc went on to build the Honcho, it does offers more greater flexibility than all othat platforms on the market.  It's like having multiple platforms in one, and that's very appealing to many.  However, many competitive shooters prefer to just have one platform instead of many combined.

Makes life easier too~  But the Honcho is by far the most intriguin platform out there at this present moment, at least in my opinion... It all boils down to budget, taste, personal preference, and also, needs and want...  Many of us don't have a need, but just a "want" [emoji4]

    Naw man. I need a honcho [emoji38]
I love my new gun. I need a newer gun.

  3. That’s what I was thinking too.  You would recommend getting the slide tapped? I don’t plan on shooting open any time soon but it’s something I might want to get into later on.  I appreciate everyone’s input and help.

Well you could shoot open with a slide ride optic but I wouldn’t. I’d get the frame tapped so you can mount a frame mounted dot eventually and then shoot open.
You could just run a slide mounted optic as well or not.
But I’d get as much done to it as I could without having to send it back later.
Especially if you cut it or still and tap, you’d have to get it recoated

  4. Right on.  Would you go with the honcho race shop or the 3 gun ?

Race shop allows you a la carte options. So you can buy the limited gun with just one barrel. Go with just the single port comp. get the frame threaded and then run open later. Or just build an open gun with one 9 major or one 38 sc barrel.
Allows you a lot of options without breaking the bank and buying the 2 limited barrels and 2 open barrels

When I fist started in this sport, I really wanted and Open gun, but didn't want to reload; fast forward eight years and I wonder why I didn't start earlier.

It's not as much about saving money as it is unleashing the potential of this awesome machine you have.

Putting factory ammo in a $6,000 race gun is like putting pump gas in a dragster: sure you can tweak it to function and get down the track, but you'll never know what it can do until you feed it the best fuel.

I felt the same way. I had shot a lot of 3 gun and a lot of USPSA in limited division and PCC. And I wanted to be competing in the most competitive division. The fastest, no limits on much. But as far as open I think it would have given me a lot of skills that would have helped me in limited. But there is value in cross training for sure.

Zack can you pm me and let me know where you’re located in the nc area? I’ll see if we can find someone you can link up with to get your hands on one. Most the guys on the team are in the Atlanta fort benning area.

  6. Do you use the comp barrel for anything besides open?

I only have the 3port open in 9maj and 38sc.

But, I was thinking about running the single port comp and minor Ammo through it without changing anything else, for steel challenge and things like that.
Or just run winchester white box through my open gun. Cause it actually runs it [emoji23] hardly even recoils at all.

  7. I live in North Carolina, in the Fayetteville area.   I would love to actually get my hands on one before pulling the trigger on buying one.  I haven’t shot open yet, but I enjoy shooting 40 in limited major.   Would the honcho be a good choice to fill the gap or a limited major as well as 3gun?

I’ll admit I’ve only shot it in 9mm with the sight block for 3gun. The limited minor set up is badass. Shoots awesome. But I shoot mostly open.

  8. I appreciate the Info.  If you were to pick between the Erebus or the honcho, which would you pick ?  I just don’t want to buy one and regret not getting the other.  Because it’ll be a long long time until my wife lets me get another 2011.

Hey zack, where are you located? I’m a PT team shooter. We can get ya set up to test one.
If you’re in this area hit me up. You can always run one of mine during a match.
I don’t really shoot too much 3gun anymore. And have both mine set up for open for USPSA.

  9. I'm running a 6 but sometimes wished I had a dot that almost went shoulder to shoulder at 50 Yards.

That would have to be a 24Moa dot lol If we are saying the standard from shoulder to shoulder is 12.”

What’s the biggest dot they Make? A 12 maybe on the cmore? I don’t even know.

You'd be surprised how unbiased I actually am. I don't pull punches just because I'm on the "team".
I wouldn't shoot a Honcho if If I thought I was sacrificing ANYTHING. Whether that be build quality, reliability, durability, or performance. Tiffany knows that, and knows I don't mind voicing it if something needs an improvement.  But anywho... none of that really matters, lets be objective about it.

As far as materials, you can disagree,  but it's not really subjective. Without going into the technical aspects...the materials and heat treat practices used in the major components of the gun are as good as it gets in the custom pistol world. They just are. You are going to break parts in any Open or Limited gun that gets used hard. I've pretty much cracked a slide (and various other parts) every year (various slide manufacturers, various builders)..... up until my Honchos. They've been solid. That's not me being biased, that's just the reality.

EGW ball discos are suuuuppppperrr common. The fact that one was used isn't an issue. It sucks that some debris stuck it, but that's not common. Hundreds of thousands of rounds through Open and Limited guns with EGW discos, and I've never seen it. But sounds like that's resolved.

Every single Honcho that has been produced is tested on stock MBX mags. Your gun was tested on MBX mags. Every single Honcho I've ever touched will run on MBX mags. I'd bet the root cause of the issue isn't the mags.

I know that type of stuff can be frustrating, and I don't say anything that I've said to be argumentative, but rather to just provide you some food for thought.
It's a SUPER nice Open gun. It is, and I guarantee if I had the gun for 10 min I'd have it running 100%, but diagnosing stuff can be frustrating some times I know.

Take a breath, PT will get you squared away, and you'll enjoy the heck out of that gun.

Agreed. I ain’t gonna kiss Tiffany’s ass just cause I’m on the team haha! Plus I paid full price for both mine. But the gun kicks ass. I haven’t touched an open gun that didn’t need tuning. And tuning that works for you might not work for me. Springs. Loads. All that.
s#!t one open gun I had, comp came lose. Extractor Broke. Mag catch broke. All under 4200 rounds. And that was from a refutable builder.
Once you get her squared away you’ll fee
Bad about talking about your girl like that. Shhh she can hear you. [emoji38]

  11. Good to hear they are easy and good to work with. Thanks

Oh. I was trying to remember what other problem I had. So this is kinda embarrassing. But s#!t happens. Somehow I broke a screw head off trying to tighten my optic mount down. And it broke off damn near flush with the frame. So I couldn’t get it out. Sent it back. They drilled it out no issues. And all the threads were good to go.
But they got it back to me pretty fast. But I suppose stupid stuff I do is why I have a back up gun haha

  12. Are you shooting 9major or Super? What springs ( hammer, recoil) did you change out and settle on? Thanks

For me and my Shooting style I figured out it was sprung too heavy. Occasionally it would stove pipe or not fully engage the ejector.
After trouble shooting with brian on the phone and ruling out everything with the gun
(Mount screws protruding in spring tunnel, issues with engaging the ambi safety, things like that)
I tried changing the springs out. I would not suggest doing that until you’ve shot the gun. What might work for you might not work for me and vice versa.
I switched it to a 7pound ismi with 2 coils cut off and one pound lighter main spring. Can’t remember what it is. I think it’s 19. So switched to an 18. Or an 18 and switched to a 17.
It’s just open guns. Gotta tune em and have them set up properly. I do have to say Brian is super knowledgeable and helpful. If you have an issue he’ll call you and talk to you to get it sorted out no matter what time it is.

And to answer your question I shoot both 9major and 38sc. Just depends what I have on hand. I shoot 80% 9major tho. I don’t switch any springs out. I just swap the barrels right at the range. And I’m good to go.

  13. Ive heard the question come up a lot.
What size MOA dot should i go with? Its shooter preference. With that being said, for action shooting, generally bigger is better in my opinion. 6 MOA dot is covering 6 inches at 100 so 1.25 inches at 25. Which for action pistol, isnt that significant. I know a lot of guys even running 8 MOA dots or bigger. With a smaller dot, you pick up every minute movement in the gun. For a 2.5 or 3MOA i felt that i could not accept wobble on the smaller dot. It helped to increase the dot size. And i didnt notice it as much. I also felt that it was easier to pick the dot up shooting on the move, and coming into positions hard, having to mount the gun again when my shooting position wasnt the most stable. Yong Lee is a GM carry optics shooter who I've listened to on several podcasts who said, "dont hold your dot to a higher standard than iron sights." What he meant by that is, your wobble on irons youd accept it, or wouldnt be able to perceive micro movements in the pistol as much. With a smaller dot especially, you pick up every micro movement in the gun. Which isnt necessarily a bad thing, but can be distracting if youre a perfectionist like me. Im definitely more of a tactical turtle type shooter. And it took me a long time to break through that shoot safe and get good points mentality. I still shoot too conservatively. You are able to refine quickly what you need to refine in order to get good hits on targets at distance, or smaller targets, or high risk targets (no shoots and tuxedos). So what ive been doing is running the 3MOA dot on my back up gun and doing dry fires on that. And for matches Ive been running the Romeo 3Max with 6MOA dot.

  14. I’ve got 2 of them set up for open. I’ve had a couple things minor here and there. But nothing major.
I did change the springs on mine. But besides that nothing crazy. I have about 15,000 rounds on both mine together.
Once you get it tuned for you, with your Ammo, it’s a dream. You’ll love it.

  15. It’s being shipped out to me tomorrow but it looks like it’s all one piece, I’ll let you know if its not.    Pretty sure the breakdown of the Honcho you have to take the two screws out to remove the racker and plate, unlike some others where you can just pull the racker from the gun.  99% sure it’s all one piece.

Yes. The slide rucker and plate is all one piece

  16. I know guys who shoot open seriously and pcc for fun during the off season. Is this your approach or do you shoot both with the same goals and determination?

Good question. I treat every match the same. I go and shoot locals with the same mentality as a major match.
All my Mental programming etc is the same. Especially for matches where I have to travel a little ways it’s more productive for me if I can double down on divisions. Instead of shooting 6 stages I can shoot 12 in a competitive atmosphere. I call it match endurance. Usually the majors are about 12+ so it helps when you can stat focused and train shooting 12 stages. Staying mentally
Focused and making sure you do your mental programming (active visualization etc) is hard to do for 12 stages straight.
It also allows me to shoot a stage a little differently just to try something new. Not to sound ungrateful or like I don’t work hard, but Pcc is easier for me. I don’t really train it too often. Since I haven’t even been shooting open for a year yet I mostly focus on training for that.

Good deal. Thanks for the info. The new model with the 5" barrel and the shroud is supposedly 1 pound or so lighter than the regular GMR-15.  Saw a review on youtube and it looks pretty sweet. They have an access point to the crown of the barrel to clean/ etc. Comp is built into the shroud.

Yep. That’s why I want it.
I’ve used the regular barreled one forever. Even on carbine matches it does awesome even out to 100 yards. But I want something just slightly lighter for shorter range matches.

  18. Good Evening,

I am looking to get into the PCC game and wanted to know anyones thoughts and advice on the GMR-15 Ultralight PCC Ready Rifle. I see it listed on JP's site for $1799. It is a call to order item so not sure of the wait time on it. Does anyone offer a promo or coupon code for this particular build? It looks to be a solid out of the box PCC shooter. Thanks in advance for the thought and info.

    Take Care,

    -SS

Doubt you’ll find any codes unless JP is running a sale.
I will say tho that after shooting one for years it’s one of the most reliable guns I own. While i see other PCC’s and mcx’s go sown the JP just runs and runs. I have over 50,000 on mine and the only thing I had to replace was the rubber washers on the silent buffer.

I plan on buying another one soon and it’ll be the lightweight barrel option. That’s the only thing. I wish I had a slightly lighter version.
I also have one of their CTR02 comp rifles and it’s [emoji1476]mint

If you search for “what PCC I should buy?” I doubt you’ll find anyone say anything else. Just save yourself the trouble and buy once, cry once. Buy a JP and never look back.

  19. The alpha x holster has worked great for me. The mag pouches are trash. The the mag pouches after one dry fire session were coming off. I returned em for the regular race master pouches. I just don’t know how they released these for sale.

  20. I also am having some unburnt powder in my Akai. It’s still shooting very accurate and consistent. I’m curious what comes of this.

Me and m buddy had the same issue. We crimped a little harder and it seemed to alleviate the problem.
I however switched to something else. That’s a great powder, I just had problems with it running automated at High RPM and not having powder spillage
