  1. 12" of snow so far this weekend (4/15/18) in MN so getting caught up on reloading. Finished loading (150) rounds of 6.5 Creedmoor and switching over to 223. Have never loaded 223 so far but looking to work up precision loads for one of my 223 Wylde rifles. Was planning on working up loads for Hornady brass, AR Comp powder, Hornady 75g BTHP bullets and Federal AR Small Rifle Match primers.

I haven't had any problem with any other loads but soon as I tried to load 223, no go for primers.  I do the full primer pocket bevel and  uniformer for 6.5 but for about a thousand casing of 223....nope.

Tumbled brass, full resize and decap with match grade Hornady dies using One Shot lube and then ran each batch of brass through the tumbler again to clean the One Shot and primer pocket.

I started with the single stage classic and the auto primer setup but the Federal AR Match, small rifle primers would either crush or not seat more than half way.

Converted the LNL press for just seating primers for the 223 and same thing. Primers would seat half way and start to crush and jamb the press. WTF????

I'm using Hornady once fired brass and would not expect these kind of issues.

I have (3,000) of the AR Match Grade Primers on the shelf and wondering what's up with trying to seat these primers?

  2. Spent Sunday at the range doing chrono test on the latest batch of recipes. This time I loaded (15) of each weight so I could chrono ten and then shoot five without the bayo attached. HUGE difference in group without the bayo. Last week I was testing loads in the 41.x range, yesterday was in the 40.x range. 40.5 came the closest to duplicating Hornady ELD-Match factory loads and performance. Since reloaders are into their data, here's data overload attached. Target is shot bipod only, not sandbags. 38 degrees out.

  3. This weekend, Sunday 3/18/18 I worked up my first batch of 6.5 loads using H3450 behind ELD-Match 140 loaded in Federal brass and Federal LR primers.. I bought a box of Hornady ELD-Match 140 factory loads to use as a baseline for comparison. Went to range and ran chrono on all the loads. Started at 38 degrees for a balmy MN afternoon so when I started shooting my ammo was probably about 60 degrees and started cooling from there. First group of ten was center target using Factory Match, upper left 2nd and then clockwise. I was surprised when I check my brass that all the primers were slightly flattened, not pancaked but flatter than normal even at 41.1gr. I'll be using Winchester WLR primers next base as Federal are really soft.

Third time out with the RPR 6.5 so still learning. Liked the first group for ten rounds at 100 with a MagnetoSpeed V3 on the barrel.

  4. I load Alliant Power Pistol for my 9mm. Being in MN I've notice different Chrony readings for same loads at different temperatures. I've attached a couple of my Chrony logs for reference. Even more important is the difference I've found in groupings at lower temps. Loads that are zeroed at average temperatures that fifteen rounds will punch a 1-1/2" hole at 10 yards (pistol & rest) open up to 5" spread when ammo is cold. Most noticeable when guns and ammo are in the truck all day in January and then go the range after work. First batch of magazines when cold spray a 5" group. Lay the mags out and warm up to room temp and group tightens substantially. Haven't loaded other powders and tested but do have records and targets documenting Power Pistol.
