  1. Did our highly articulate, completely worthless bot get removed? Keep wondering how these things get through to create profiles and make posts.
  2. Interesting. All about learning new things. Pulled four other AR's out of the safe and checked the castle nut and the 9mm I just worked on is the first and only one I've encountered. I just used a small pin punch to tap the staking back and it come loose. I can see where military use it would make total sense.
  3. On a somewhat related topic.... PSA did respond and as expected, send the upper back and disclaimer, allow four to six weeks for repairs. Since I'm keeping the firearm decided to continue the conversion. Have a FAB stock to replace the brace so went to replace that this afternoon. Have the actual armours wrench and when I tried to undo the buffer tube nut it didn't move. Closer inspection and discovered the buffer nut is staked at several locations. That's another one I've never encountered before as I've replaced the stock on every one of my AR's. Is there something unique about a braced 9mm that they are not intended to be modified?
  4. Latest, latest Let the barrel and upper soak another night for a total of 44 fours, tried again and the barrel nut will NOT budge. Called PSA Monday morning on the only phone number I could find and finally connected with a woman. Tried to explain what I wanted and who or what department was the best option for what I was needed. NOT very helpful, kept asking for my order number. Kept trying to explain, I went through the contact form a week ago asking for help, did not receive a response, trying again to find out who I needed to talk to. Over and over, what's my order number. Finally gave her the number from last year when I bought the 9mm braces rifle, that's what I'm dealing with, explained I already bought replacement parts but needed technical help. Woman was on a script, no help, finally had to submit a warranty request. When I received the acknowledgement of the request repeated all the same details I've been going through. Now lets see if I get a response. Up until this last couple weeks I've LOVED PSA, let's see how things go.
  5. Latest..... After brute force, heat, penetrating oil standing one end and soaking overnight, more heat, more force, determined it must be Rocksett. Twenty hours soaking overnight in hot water, keep dipping the water out as it cools and adding more boiling water. Just tried again and IT WILL NOT BUDGE!! Now I'm getting pissed. There is not reason for PSA to mount the barrel so it can NOT be removed. When I bought the two 300 BlackOuts I tried to get the birdcage flash hider off so I could mount my ASR mount for suppressor and same issue. Had to sent both back, pay shipping both ways, wait a month and when it came back the threads were fully coated with Rocksett, not just a small dollop. Took a lot of wire brush time to get all the gunk off the treads. I've been buying PSA for years and have four rifles but their love of Rocksett is pushing me to Aero. Anyone do Aero builds and do you have the same issues with their barrels and mussel devices?
  6. I had the same idea of just picking up another striped upper and leave the existing one as is. Checked with PSA and Aero and never found a 9mm stripped, just complete uppers. Would prefer to find a decent price quality upper and have the option of two uppers. After return from taking wife to airport around noon will reheat the water after about 20 hours of soak and try again. Not looking forward to defeat and sending to PSA as double shipping and a month wait.
  7. Update: Flexbar Rocksett INCREDIBLE TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE (-350°F) up to 2,015°F The extreme temperature range makes Rocksett ideal for attaching muzzle devices. Rocksett withstands oil, fuels, acids, alkalis. Long shelf life. No mixing or priming required. Can only be removed by a hot water soak. Keeps assemblies from vibrating loose. Popular for muzzle brakes/recoil compensators and suppressors. Barrel and upper receiver are currently soaking in a cooler of hot water, adding as needed. We'll how long it needs to soak and update.
  8. Given the current legal status of pistol braces I decided I didn't want to deal with the government for my braced 9mm PCC. Took forever but finally received the 16" barrel, new hand guard and FAB Defense stock from PSA to convert to legal length. What should have been a fairly easy project to remove the barrel nut and swap barrels is now a major PIA. I know every time I've tried to get the birdcage flash hider off PSA barrels it was a no go. Previously contacted PSA asking how to get the parts off and the response was simply "send it back". Twice the parts came back and the treads were caked with a gray thread lock compound. One rifle I ended up taking to my local gunsmith and he couldn't get the muzzle break off, finally ended up sticking the rifle barrel down in a bucked of acetone and soaked for couple hours before it loosened up. I have a special clam-shell clamp for standard AR uppers for this type of work but PCC uppers are different and I don't have that special tool for this upper. I do have a full shop so well stocked. Tried locking in vice, double wrenches brute force, MAPP gas heat, more force, soaking in penetrating oil, more force, more heat and the barrel nut will not budge. Trying to remember the name of the thread lock...something crete I think but why the hell is a barrel nut permanently locked? Anyone have some gunsmith magic?
  9. Thanks shred!! 9.1.5.3 If a bullet strikes partially within the scoring area of a cardboard or metal target and continues on to strike the scoring area of another cardboard target, the hit on the subsequent cardboard target will also count for score or penalty, as the case may be. So... The key word must be "partially" which is the exception to mean unless it touches the perf. This is the only rule that would explain the contradictions of the target example and 9.1.5.1. If the shot touches the perf it is only "partially" within the scoring area. Long, long way to get to the rule to justify the exception.
  10. Seeing lots of opinions. In summary what is being relaid is: " If the shot touches the outer perf it is considered to have occurred outside the scoring area, inside the non existent boarder but still incurs the penalty." Even when the shot is 99.9% inside the target area. IE: #2, #4, #6, #7 and #8. If not touching perf, target is impenetrable. Point of clarification, in the example attached previously with the two red circles, at our local club the red circle in the no-shoot area has been scored by many others as a hit behind for score. I do NOT agree with this scoring and is part of this whole discussion. THE OUTER BOARDER DOES NOT EXIST. As stated multiple times, if #1 and #3 were just slightly left so they DID NOT TOUCH THE PERF #1=Mike, #3=Charlie. Any shot touching the perf or inside the perf incurs the NS penalty. When taking the certification exam there are two parts, the ruling or opinion but that opinion has to have specific rules and number cited as evidence. All of the above opinions would cite NOTES-Scoring Targets to explain their opnion. 9.1.5.1 tends to contradict the target example and I have not be able to find a rule that states "unless it touches the perf line". Where is the written rule that explains the why. That has been and still is my question.
  11. Nope. Never said anything about edge hits on steel or shearing off. The analogy I made was if the no-shoot was made of steel rather than cardboard the bullet could not pass through to hit the target behind as the steel is impenetrable. Based on the explanation of "a piece of the bullet proceeded on", #3 could possibly qualify as the majority of the hit is outside the line. #2, #4, #6, #7 and #8 are completely within the target. I would not score any hit by a "piece" of a bullet as a hit. Full circle with a grease mark. Splatter, tears and pieces are NOT hits. BiknSwans: That is a major part of my complaint, hits behind the no-shoot cover. Keep hearing" that's the way we've been doing it" when scoring hits behind the no-shoot. I just want a better understanding of the concept, if the cover target is impenetrable and the area under the target does not exist, why do any hits score on the target behind. shred: Also my point. It's like, "this is the rule except on Thursdays" I have not found anything in the rules anywhere where it states, target is impenetrable "unless it touches a perf line". As I stated in the very first line, "This is a rule I've had some confusion over and how matches are scored." Still hoping someone can cite where this scoring method is explained.
  12. My issue with the rule and scoring isn't about the perfs, it's about the impenetrable surface. In the attached example as I stated above if #1 and #3 we slightly left so they did NOT touch the perf I would score #1= Mike, #3= Charlie. The way these targets have been scored the two red circles would be scored (2) Alpha, (1) No-Shoot. So....what happened to 9.1.5 Impenetrable – The scoring areas of USPSA scoring targets and no-shoots are deemed to be impenetrable: 9.1.5.1.1 In accordance with Rule 9.1.5, the scoring areas of scoring targets and no-shoots are impenetrable. Whenever two targets (scoring and/or no-shoots) are in direct contact where one target directly overlaps part of another target, the area of the "under" target which is directly covered by the scoring area of the "over" target and its perforations is deemed to be non-existent. As I read this rule, the no-shoot target is impenetrable. The area directly covered by the no-shoot is deemed to be non-existent. So, why is the non-existent area behind the impenetrable no-shot able to achieve a score? I know they have been but it still doesn't make sense to me. Inquiring minds want to know Sccoring Targets_No-Shoots1.pdf
  13. Project engineer for 32 years, now retired. NROI RO since March 2017. Yes we've been scoring the targets behind also. About to take my annual certification renewal and this is the rule that bugs me. As mentioned, the term impenetrable seems to be a contradiction to the scoring method.
  14. That's what I just said above regarding #1 and #3 if not touching the perf. Boarder outside the perf does not exist. 9.1.5 Impenetrable – The scoring areas of USPSA scoring targets and no-shoots are deemed to be impenetrable: 9.5.2 If the bullet diameter of a hit on a scoring target touches the scoring line between two scoring areas, or the line between the non-scoring border and a scoring area, or if it crosses multiple scoring areas, it will be scored the higher value. 9.5.2.1 Additionally, Rule 9.5.2 is clarified to apply only to the visible portions of targets. It specifically does not apply to any area of any target which is in direct contact with and overlapped by the scoring area of another target (scoring and/or no-shoots) or by hard cover. See illustration in Notes section. The illustration I attached above is the one listed in the Notes section. This illustration is scoring the NS for penalty and giving points for the hit behind the impenetrable target. I continue to have a problem with 9.1.5.1 as it used the term "impenetrable". If the front target was a steel plate it would be impenetrable and the round could not go through the steel plate to be able to go through the target behind. Round has to completely penetrate the cardboard target for score. Can't do that with an impenetrable target. Still have a problem with this rule and the example as they contradict each other.
  15. Essentially all of them except #5. Doesn't mater if the shot in the scoring area touches the perf, it's still scored as a NS and in this example they are scoring the target behind. If #1 and #3 were slightly left so they did not touch the perf they would not be scored as NS and I would score #1 as a Mike and #3 as a "C". This example seems to contradict the impenetrable rule by allowing the shot to pass through the NS and strike another target.
  16. This is a rule I've had some confusion over and how matches are scored. 9.1.5.1.1 In accordance with Rule 9.1.5, the scoring areas of scoring targets and no-shoots are impenetrable. Whenever two targets (scoring and/or no-shoots) are in direct contact where one target directly overlaps part of another target, the area of the "under" target which is directly covered by the scoring area of the "over" target and its perforations is deemed to be non-existent. Seems pretty simple, ones shot can not go through the first target and score on the target behind the first target as the first target is "impenetrable". I've gone back in time and looked at my old rules books back to 2014 and this rule has not changed. At our local matches when a no-shot overlaps a scoring target hits incur the no-shot penalty plus get points for the target behind the no-shot. Rule books shows that hits do travel through the first target and score on the 2nd target (see attachment). Seems to contradict 9.1.5.1. NS scoring rules pg 118.pdf
  17. Latest... Tried to order the Safariland strap mount for the leg shroud and Safariland and every other site says six to eight week lead time. Sounds like parts are setting in a cargo container from China. Decided to make my own so ordered some heavy duty 2" strap and folded the strap over with contact cement to make stiffer. Made my own ELS hybrid hanger. Just finished up and still have some tweaks but latest results attached.
  18. I agree I don't like the plastic hanger which goes back to the earlier question. Other options than the one that comes with the drop leg shroud. The only other option that looked more comfortable is the strap but I have concerns the holster will come up during a draw. I have Boss drop hangers on two other belts but really wanted the strap holster to work.
  19. Good timing. I finally received my Safariland holster yesterday. Ordered 6390 ALS holster with the QLS mount 10/06. Mounted to the Safariland ELS belt and drop leg shroud mount 6004-27. Was working on dry fire draws from holster. Few observations. The QLS attachments to the holster gives an odd cant to the holster so the top is angled forward. Even maxing out adjustments doesn't make straight up and down let alone a slight backward angle. The forward can't is not a natural draw for me. The retention release just takes a bit of practice and comes pretty easy. I wanted the combination of the ALS holster and the single strap leg shroud. Pros and cons: Leg strap and shroud are secure so long as not needing to move. Do NOT like the drop flex adapter. Too rigid and limits leg movement. Tried to bend down and pick something off the floor and need to disconnect the strap or the shroud binds and pushes up on the belt. Was wondering if the strap connection gives more mobility but I had concerns about pistol draws. Doubt if the strap will hold the holster down during pistol draw and not allow the holster to pull up during the draw. Anyone use this mount and have any insight? Hate buying gear that goes into the scrap box. Have bunch of ALS clips and Safariland mag pouches already going into the scrap box.
  20. Wow.... Just called Carbon Arms to try and place the order over the phone and just pay the extra. Found out two weeks ago their merchant service provider dropped them and blocked them because the credit card company does not provide service to companies in the gun industry. This is a prime example of the ESG political crap going on. Another back door attempt at the 2nd amendment. They have tried other merchant service providers but seems all the ones they tried will not do business with companies related to the gun industry.
  21. Went to my first 3Gun match this Saturday to talk to other shooters and get gear and match advice. Been shooting USPSA for years, PRS amateur but haven't shot 3Gun yet. Still waiting for my Safariland 6390 holster, have the ELS basketweave belt ordered, ELS clips etc. Went to Carbon Arms to order the $20 ratchet set and at checkout was informed can not place order, does not meet minimum order of $25. WTF? Didn't anything else they sold I was interested in and have an issue with "we won't sell to you unless you spend more money" Been seeing ratchets marked M2 which seems to be the other version in use. Any additional info or opinions?
