OK for all you FBI data nuthuggers, momentum is not taken into account.  Also the FBI is looking for a specific goal, x expansion and x penetration, now that 9 luger can meet these goals people want to think the rounds are equal, they are not.  If the goal is 165, or heaven forbid 180 PF, have fun blowing up your non comped 9s.What if the goal is energy?  the 9 falls woefully short there too.  Penetration you say, nope with ball ammo in real world targets the 9 gets crushed by the 40.  So it appears that when you download the 40 and run the 9 mm at pretty much the top end the 9 can match the 40 and 45 in a specific test to meet specific goals, but stray out side that test and the 9 starts showing a lack of power rather quickly.  USPSA has nothing todo with the FBI and I hope it stays that way, and nothing says that any sport has to take into account FBI results.  USPSA set rules for a broader spectrum of power and the 9 is a bottom feeder in that field, so if you want to shoot 9 either suck it up and shoot minor, or suck it up and shoot open.  Now please sit down, shut up, and quit trying to ruin my sport, y'all have a nice day

Hahahaha! See!?!? Just as i predicted.

I would be fine with no major/minor, as long as we got rid of popper calibration too.  Just go with steel must fall to score, and if a 40 or 45 knocks it down and a 9 don't, you could right to the FBI and explain the unfairness.

I would be fine with that too.

Major/minor is another element to the game that i view as an effort by USPSA to acknowledge the advantage that higher energy rounds supposedly give in real life. In other words, you don’t have to be as accurate with higher energy rounds because they do more damage on the target. Well, after lots of testing the FBI has concluded that premise is not true (kind of). So if that’s the rationale, the major/minor thing seems to be based on outdated information.

You can also look at it as USPSA trying to level the playing field between calibers that have different recoil impulses. But if that’s the case it’s also been a failure because high capacity 40 guns seem to dominate (in limited). And with 40 becoming a disfavored (or at least much less popular) caliber among law enforcement and the private market, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me for USPSA rules to favor (inadvertently or otherwise) a caliber that is on the decline.

    Let the flaming begin, haha.

  3. I’ve experienced this before with some Rugers (particularly the SP101). A competent smith can get rid of it for you. Could be anything from a burr on the sear edge to a slightly out of spec part of the trigger group. Rubbing of the transfer bar, etc. Try mojo custom guns, Bowen classic arms, a number of others.

It is a bit off topic but I read the same thing in the latest USPSA mag (area 1 candidate) and could not think of any reason why 99.97% of USPSA shooters would care what the FBI concluded about gun wounds or want it to effect their preferred pastime. If I was going to write up some sort of a trolling topic to rile up the shooters this might be it :) .

That sounds like a dare! But I’ll pass on this one. I don’t feel like getting flamed for two weeks while everyone chimes in. Haha.

  5. It just means that the division name of ‘production’ is somewhat misleading. They should rename the division to the “Limited 10 Minor PF with Only Certain Guns Allowed” Division. It’s not really ‘production’ any more. But then again it never really was.

Even better, now that the FBI has concluded that there’s no substantial performance difference between 9mm, 40 and 45 on real targets, USPSA ought to get rid of making minor versus major PF. I know it will never happen. But that’s only because there’s huge resistance to effecting institutional change when things have been done a certain way for so long.

  6. I’m 6’4” but my hands are larger than my brother who is 6’10”. I have very large hands and fingers. Holding a CZ with palm swell grips my fingers still almost touch the base of my palm and there’s no way, even with over sized grips that there is going to be much space for my support hand to touch the grip. So after a ton of experimentation with both grip styles and grip sizes i have found that i get the best recoil control with a standard size grip, rock hard strength with the support hand (get some captains of crush 1.5 grippers on eBay) and then place the index finger of your support hand on the textured front of the trigger guard of your CZ (that’s what the texture is there for). This is the same grip that Eric Grauffel uses to win all his ipsc championships and it works really well for those with larger hands.
I also shoot a large frame tanfo, which also helps.

  7. they may not survive in competitions simply because the rules
    do not favor their use.

That’s true. I for one hope that the rules will once again be more inclusive. They’ll always have a home at ICORE at least.

  8. Shooting revolver in USPSA is only slightly more fun than getting kicked in the nuts

I take it you don’t golf then? Shooting revolver is a lot like golfing. The equipment for golf is not very efficient for accomplishing the goal. Getting the ball down the course and into the hole as few as strokes as possible. There are so many changes you could make to golf equipment to make them do that better. But all of those changes have been outlawed by usga. So you end up using equipment that is harder to use and people still love the displays of athleticism involved to accomplish the goals of the game.

Revolver is similar. Sure there is equipment out there that can shoot faster and with fewer reloads. But that doesn’t make it any less fun.

and given how big the high bypass blades  are getting....
you could make a case that propellers are making a reappearance.

    I don't have a revolver.
If I felt a round gun was some how better than the bottom feeder I have,
    I would consider getting one.

Any time there’s a discussion about revolver competition and some one says “revolvers aren’t better” i ask “better for what?” This is USPSA. It’s a game. None of the guns being shot are carry pieces, even in production. That’s what idpa is for, theoretically. It’s like saying a race car is better than a truck. They both have applications.
Revolvers are fun to shoot and more challenging. They aren’t intended to compete against semi autos.
I usually shoot revolver, which means I’m competing against myself. When I shoot a semi auto at my local matches i usually place in the top five. Shooting revolver has made me a MUCH better shooter.
So, i guess revolver is better in that sense. :)

  10. Alright here’s some results from experimenting with American Select in 38 special loads:

    Out of a GP100 4 inch barrel:

    160 gn Bayou RN

    3.7 gn Am.Sel.

    Avg. Vel.: 759.2 fps

    Hi: 777

    Lo: 739

    Std Dev: 12.69

    138 gn Bayou WC

    4.2 gn Am. Sel.

    Avg Vel: 953.6

    Hi: 970

    Lo: 937

    Std Dev: 12.91

I also did some bench rest accuracy testing. The following groups are all at 25 yards from a rest open sights. This is comparing several powders using the same brand primer, same headstamp of brass, same bullet. Light taper crimp. Same OAL of 1.487 for the RNs. (Forgot to measure the OAL for the WCs.) Groups are measured from center to center, measured in inches.

I shot all the 160 gn Bayou RN from a S&W 627 PC 5 inch barrel. 8 shot groups.

4.0 gn of Am. Sel.: 1 and 13/16ths

    4.0 gn of VV320: 2 and 7/16ths

    3.8 gn of Bullseye: 3 and 5/16ths

    4.0 gn of W231: 3 inches

I shot all the 138 gn Bayou WC from a Dan Wesson 715 6 inch barrel. 6 shot groups

4.2 gn of Am. Sel.: 1 and 5/16ths

    4.4 gn of VV320: 2 and 3/16ths

    4.3 gn of Bullseye: 2 and 2/16ths

    4.3 gn of W231: 2 and 6/16ths

The VV320 had the least flash and recoil. The other three were all about the same. Accuracy testing was done blind (meaning i didn’t know which powder i was shooting until afterwards).

Frankly I’m surprised how well American Select did.

  11. Depends on the powder and bullet. Some need cleaning faster than others. I had some unburned powder (W231) get under the ejector star on the last stage of a regional ICORE and make it so the cylinder would not close after a reload. Now i run a nylon brush under the ejector star after every 3 or 4 stages when shooting a match. Full clean every 1000 or so.

  12. Basically it’s a question of whether you want to shoot speedloaders at 105 PF or moonclips at 155 PF. Pick your poison depending on whether you feel more comfortable managing stiff recoil or mastering the speedloader.

There’s any number of options to choose from in terms of firearms, but imho the S&W 686SSR is a best buy.

GP100 match champion is a good option too if you want to branch out from smith.

Could be fun to run a Dan Wesson in a four inch barrel if you wanted to do something unique.

  13. After attending a regional match i learned that several competitors prefer to run American Select powder with Bayou Bullets, so i decided to give it a try. I’ll be trying it in 38 special first (have lots of loaded 9mm on hand at the moment). But I’m having some trouble finding load data. Anyone willing to share their recipes? Bullet is 160 gn RN. Thanks.
