  1. I've been reviewing old posts to find a good load for my STI DVC Steel gun. It seems that the most popular strategy is to use a light bullet with slow powder to get the comp to work efficiently. I'm currently using Zero 115 JHP over 6.7 HS6  @1.135 (PF 134). I've also tried up to 7.5 gr of HS6 @1.155 (PF151). The 7.5 gr load has a heavier recoil but is a little flatter than the lighter load and I think I'm a little faster with that one.

I'm using 124 gr Prec Delta JHP for my open gun and am thinking about standardizing on that bullet and HS6 for both applications. Any thoughts or recommendations on this?

  2. I live in Connecticut and want to build a 9mm PCC based on my pre-ban PWA lower. Unfortunately, I'm stuck with that lower due to our state laws. I've looked around on the Web and have read a lot of articles on this forum, all of which are making my head spin. Can anyone with experience point me in the right direction?

I shoot a Volquartsen Superlight in .22 steel events so would prefer this build to turn out as light as possible.

  3. I agree with maximum benefit from shooting with match ammo and do this as much as I possible when the weather is good. One of the clubs I belong to which is 5 minutes from my house has an indoor range which only allows .22 cal guns. I plan to use this during the Winter for practice.

One of my guns is an STI DVC Limited in 9 mm. Until recently I wasn't able to shoot iron sights due to some vision problems (eyes are the second thing to go :-)). I've since been able to correct my vision and really need some time with the irons to get up to speed there. I have a Nelson conversion that goes on that gun to make that happen.

  4. There are a couple of sources of 2011 .22 mags that I know about. Nelson Custom and Marvel Precision both make them. I already have a Nelson conversion on my 1911 which runs 100% so I'm not too worried about getting the 2011 to run.

The point about dry firing vs .22 is well taken and if practice was my only consideration that is just what I would do. However, if I build this I could also shoot it in .22 steel events. I already have 3 STI 2011's so the benefit of shooting exactly the same grip, trigger, etc. would be an advantage for me.

  5. I'm developing a 9 major load for my STI DVC Open gun. Looks like 8.5 gr of HS6 under a 124 gr Precision Delta JHP, CCI spp and 1.165 COAL  gets me 171+ PF. A local shooter warned me about using HS6 because of excessive heating of the gun. He has switched to Autocomp for his 9 major loads because of this.

    Is this a valid concern?

  6. I'm thinking about building a dedicated 2011 frame with a Nelson conversion unit for winter indoor practice. I already have a grip, magwell, sight mount and C-more slide ride and plan to buy the rest of the frame components from Brazos. Does anyone have experience with this?

My main concern is that the frame normally would be fitted to a slide in a typical 2011 build. I assume that the raw frame is a little undersized to facilitate the fitting process. Will the Nelson unit fit on the raw frame dimensions?

  7. I was shooting 115 gr Black Bullets in my DVC Open for steel with COAL of 1.135. I recently bought a DVC Steel gun and tried to use some of the ammo I had on hand. No go. The max COAL the steel gun will chamber with these bullets is about 1.040. So now I'm trying to work up a load to use up the rest of the BBI bullets I have on hand. With a COAL of 1.030 I've tried from 6.4 to 5.8 of HS6 so far and in all cases there were pressure signs (extrusion around primer strike) and accuracy was terrible. I'm going down to 5.2 of HS6 to see what happens there. I would prefer to stay with the slower powders for now but will also try some 231 if the lower charge of HS6 doesn't work.

Anyone have experience with loading these bullets this short?
