I'm not 100% sure since the pic is confusing to me, but it looks like the trigger bar is not riding on top of the safety plunger, but rather to its outside. I notice in my TP9SFx that the trigger bar does not contact the plunger on its center, but rather off to one side. It looks like in your case the trigger bar is to the side of the plunger and that's why it has all that metal worn away on the bump you show. You can see this problem in action if you put the slide on, rack the slide to cock the assembly, then look through the mag channel with a flashlight (no mag in place of course). You'll be able to see the interaction there as you pull the trigger. (I'm not too impressed with how in my TP9SFx specimen the trigger bar does not ride the plunger surface centrally as you'd think would be best.)

I think Brad nailed this one.

I'm not going to buy and keep a gun that has a design flaw that prevents it from working the way it's supposed to from the factory, regardless if it's just for competition.  I recently got a Walther PDP Match steel frame to compare the two to see which one I want to keep and buy another of and it does not have this issue, which is how it should be.

    That's not encouraging.

Sold my older version and picked up a new one with a label date of 12/21/2023 with serial # 23 CS 080XX.  I made sure to get the serial number and the date on the label before purchasing.  We'll see what happens.

I'm now seeing plenty on GunBroker, some with label dates in 2024.

I think your best bet on the over insertion problem is going to be to buy some aftermarket base pads that prevent you from over inserting the magazine. My understanding is that the Walther has this same over insertion problem. The design of the Walther and Canik are very very similar.

question on the glock guide rods in the rival .. are they for a 17? I'd like to put a true tungsten rod in , which is heavier than the W74 rod I ordered for the poly rival

Yes, the ones I use are for a Glock 17 that I purchased from Wolff.

Those of you who have an updated, working Rival-S, please drop the serial number (with the last 2 digits as XX if you want) so those of us who are looking to buy a newer production model can compare serial numbers with the one we want to buy.  This way hopefully we can prevent getting shafted with an older model that doesn't work properly and then have to go through all the BS with Century Arms, like I went through before.  Specify Darkside or Chrome.

I saw a new Darkside recently on Gunbroker.com with:

    T6472-23 CS 0828X

The Darkside I had issues with (and sold):

    T6472-23 CS 012XX

Not sure that any of the ones I have are what you are looking for, but please see below.

Both of these have the new locking block and barrel design, but you can still over insert the magazine.
    T6472-23 CS 006XX

    T6472-23 CS 011XX

This one has the old locking block and barrel design. You can over insert the magazine in this one as well.

Lots of times these days products are essentially designed by marketing folks. They decide on features&functions, then engineers build to that. Marketing folks follow trends, etc, to maximize revenues...  (Some might lead trends, but lots follow.)  Well, maybe "marketing folks" are not literally trained marketeers; "product managers" might be a better phrase, but product managers are often not engineers, they're more following and analyzing trends in the market, so to me they're marketing folks...sorry for my rash descriptions here.

Again. 100% on the money. Throw a comp on there, send a little bit of money over TTI’s way for the collab, and a fancy coin in the case to go with it and watch your revenue double. This is the marketing department earning their keep.

I guess I don't get the fascination with "Comped" 9mm pistols. Standard 9mm ammo is already a very easy caliber to shoot and manage recoil on. Adding a comp isn't going to Fix poor grip mechanics. Grip the gun properly and managing recoil effectively isn't a problem.

To me adding a Comp to a handgun cambered in 9mm is like adding a Wing to a Honda Civic. Looks cool but servers virtually zero improvement in performance.

I guess companies have to do "Something" each year to release something "New" regardless of it actually being a tangible improvement to the product.

    100% this.

It is a Honda Civic with a wing on it.

The Brian Enos forums have no connection to USPSA.

The guidelines have been in place since Brian started the forum at least two decades ago and are integral.  He wanted a place to talk about shooting, not drama or malfeasance, no matter how much it "needed to be said".

BE can't be all things to all people.  There was a forum dedicated to the drama.  It died.

We're letting this thread be for now, but please keep posts to facts, not opinion or personal attacks or they may be removed without notice.

Drama and conflict in shooting sports has always been there.  One of my favorite quotes is "people with guns shouldn't form clubs".  I heard it in the early 1990s, but it was around a long time before that.

    Respect.

Just the fact that y’all are not immediately shutting this thread down says something in my opinion.

yessir! hope you are doing good man!

appreciate it! im sticking with polymer this season so just wanted to be sure. i just bought a spare barrel so now im curious to see what the barrel lug looks like lol

i want the steel frames but they aren't super available and now i may wait until they round these issues out haha

I think that is wise. My guess is they are going to make a gen 2 Rival-S or they will just continue making changes  without letting anyone know until they fix the current issues.

hey @ngodwetrust21, I am still running the polymer rivals that i bought back in jan 2023. had you had any of these issues on your polymer rivals (aside from the overinsertion thing)?

How many rounds do you have on your polymer rivals? I am trying to see if i need to anticipate a barrel lug breakage or not lol

Don, great hearing from you! I have not had a bit of trouble out of the polymer rivals that I shot. I believe these issues are exclusively regarding the rival–S. I would guess that I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 15,000 rounds on my polymer rival that I kept. I have had no issue with it to date.

Does anyone know if these changes have also been made to the chrome models? I am expecting a replacement chrome Rival-S this week after sending my original back to Century Arms in October. I am hoping to get the updated version (if there is one) since now there are barrel compatibility issues and the slide has been revised to correct the over insertion issues.

It does appear the changes have been made to the chrome version as well.

Has the over-insertion problem been solved in the new production model?

    I’m also curious

Excellent call out from both of you. I had not noticed this at first. I was able to recreate the over insertion issue with both barrel and locking block designs. I did some research and it appears there may even be a 3rd design where the newest of the new has a wider channel cut that runs in line with the firing pin safety (picture below). There is a channel cut in both the gun with the original locking block and barrel design and there is a channel cut with the new barrel and locking block design. But according to the thread below, the newest have an even wider channel cut.

@Bob1230 did the design you were sent with the wider channel cut fix the over insertion issue?

Who knows what else we will find they changed with this new design as time goes by.

I thought you’d given up on the S and were sticking with your original Rival? 🤔

Spent some more time with it and got the trigger working the way I want it to. I am going to run it this year and see how I like it. I am able to perform certain drills better with it simply because it is heavier.

  14. Spoke with Canik today after receiving this email. They say there is nothing they can do because they do not recommend swapping the slides from frame to frame. He was unable to tell me how to identify by the serial number which guns had the change or not. He was also unable to tell me why the change was made in the first place.

Overall a very disappointing experience and no further along than I was a month ago to solving this problem.

    this is a bummer.

I have an older plastic rival that i love, and really wanted an S, but i can say all of this will make me hold off on buying one

I hope they get your issue fixed, but as mentioned at this point the only solution seems to be swapping you out to a whole new gun

I am definitely a fan of Canik firearms for sure. SFx, Rival, and now the Rival-S are all fantastic guns. I am still planning to shoot this season with the Rival-S. Hopefully this new design fixes whatever problem the gen 1 was having.

I do feel they have some things they can improve on though. They should have let their customers know about the design change and customers shouldn’t be having to wait months on end for replacement parts. This is not the direction they should be going in order to grow their market share.

Up to this point, I have never had a problem with Canik or their products. Hopefully they do the right thing and are more transparent moving forward. If they take months to correct the problem, like how they have been with getting Thomas’ issue resolved, I am not going to be pleased.

  16. 50 minutes ago, BradNC said:

Century/Canik really ought to make sense of this and post it on their website so it's all documented forever more. It would save them and customers work in the long run. They really need to improve their rigor game overall if they want to grow market share. They make "design" changes and no one knows it, but we know it when things don't work right. Griping won't matter, but maybe Century reads this forum.

Completely agree! My guess is it has something to do with how the GEN 1 barrels were breaking. I’ve pulled this image off Andreas‘s Instagram page. It appears this broke off of where the barrel interfaces with the locking block.

Instead of addressing it, or putting out some sort of recall, it looks like a Canik just updated the design. This is complete speculation on my part though. I will be interested to see what their response is when they email me back.

Great job reporting on this. I'm still on the hunt for a second Rival-S and had I not known this, I would have been none the wiser. Thank you!

Really appreciate that! I sent Canik another email today following up as I have not received anything back as far as a resolution yet. In the email, I also asked them the reason for the design change and how to tell by the serial number which gun has which design. I will be sure to forward their response along when I hear back as I am sure others would find that info useful.

  18. 3 hours ago, Thomas918 said:

I put the new design barrel they sent me into the gun with the old locking barrel design. It barely fit and had to be knocked out because was fit so tightly. And when you press forward on the slide it goes forward at least an 1/8in. They didn't let me know there was a change. My work order specified that I had a darkside with the serial number which tells them which model I have and when it was produced, and they still sent me a barrel which could easily destroyed the frame of my gun if I used it(not with the first shots but definitely over a couple hundred shots). This is a big fumble in so many ways. My frame is from some of the first released to classic firearms after I saw Nils had posted they had some available. Only got to use it in 2 matches and has been down ever since

Sorry, Thomas. I have about about the same 1/8in of play in mine as well. I agree that over time it could damage the gun, degrade accuracy, or potentially even cause a safety concern as this new barrel was clearly not designed to work with the old locking block. I will have to say when I called and let Century Arms know what was going on, the guy I talked to either didn’t have any idea of the design change or acted like he didn’t. They really may not have known the new barrel was going to cause an issue when they sent it. I reached out to them Monday of last week with all this info and am still waiting on some resolution.

I believe your solution is correct. If they send you a new locking block assembly, this will fix the issue you are having. No matter how I combine these guns with different parts and pieces, the only thing that I see causing the problem is pairing the old locking block design with the new barrel design or vice versa.

Lastly for anyone out there waiting on a barrel from Canik, I would first confirm which locking block design you have. If it is the new locking block design, then you are going to be fine because they will send you the new barrel design. If you happen to have one of the old locking block designs like me and Thomas, you need to get on the phone or email Century Arms to let them know they are going to need to send you a new locking block assembly along with the barrel.

Regarding the slide moving forward upon pulling the trigger, could that just be the recoil spring/guide rod difference? Have you tried swapping the two to test?

Yes. The guide rod doesn’t make a difference either way as far as I can tell. Difference is how the barrel interfaces with the locking block.
