  1. Can I zero for 200 yards on a 100 yard range?

    There are great targets online that will compensate by keep in mind it is generally close, and not exact... The ammo manufactures can also provide you the ballistic tables for your ammo. The issue I see a lot is people will buy cheap ammo to train with. They will zero to that, and then try to use match ammo at comps. This will play hell with accuracy.

  2. The easiest answer is try them all... Have fun with it. Each has its own challenge. Limited gives you the most play with. Master Limited major, then minor. You can better your reloads with limited 10... which helps you in all divisions. I won't lie, I am confused by production and limited 10. I understand that it is the gun, but that is the only difference.

  3. I have a Glock 34 with factory barrel and run all Freedom these days. I use the 124gr JHP reman. Soft shooting and groups tighter than 147gr. IMHO

    It is in the end physics... Lighter bullet is moving faster, flatter trajectory, but recoil is sharper. heavier bullet moves slightly slower, recoil is slightly less. Newton's laws of motion. In the pistol world trajectory is going to be minimal.

  4. Being an LEO I wouldn't gun fight how idpa or uspsa plays out by any means. It would just get you killed. When I first started competing there was a stage where we had to open a door and fire at a few targets from the doorway and move on. Tactically and ideally you would never do that. I've always been trained and practiced to go through the door. So when I opened the door I stepped through and fired and got penalty points. Now when comparing idpa or uspsa to a normal police qualification course it's light years better for skills developed than just statically standing and shooting at a target like ppc. I think if you gave an above average competitor a week or so training in solid real world tactics they'd be heads and tales better than most in law enforcement.

    confused a bit by not shooting through a door. In the tactical world you would still "pie" the door as to clear as much of the room as I can. Badges are not bulletproof. Especially if I am by myself or I have the time. USPSA and IDPA in this case just show me my limits. It's nice knowing the targets don't shoot back.

  5. I am amused by the term gamer! IDPA is a game, an technically we are all "gamers". Even in the real world we all looking for an edge. Each stage is a puzzle we as shooters are trying to unravel. Identify-Assess-React. Works in the real world too. The guys that love the term "gamer" are the the guys who are getting beat repeatedly, but instead of raising there level of play, the gamers obviously cheated. Unless IDPA starts running blind stages, everybody is gaming. Some better then others.

  6. Appreciate your response. Glad the comp works well. Could I ask if your gun is a two- or three-port hybrid barrel? I can see two holes but want to make sure.

    Also, are there "standard" specs on how much and where the hole at the top of the comp is to be cut? Thanks.

    There are two Benny Hill "Hell Holes" in the barrel which I believe are 3/16", the barrel is 4.9" so it's sort of a mid length bull barrel gun. I bought the comp used with the slot already cut in the top; from all the pictures I've seen of these comps, some have holes in the comp, some have slots, but they all seem to incorporate at least some barrel ports. This one looks like it has seven holes in the barrel plus the slot in the comp:

  7. My new open gun in 9mm Major built by Doug Jones at Acc-U-Rail. CK Arms slide/frame, SV Grip, Binary Engineering comp, Cheely 90 degree setback, Brazos XL Zigracker. I also had him fit another barrel in .38 SC with a Cheely 4 port comp. Hoping to get out Thursday afternoon to shoot it.

    Very nice gun, built by a guy that know a little about guns too. I want to ask if the slide racker is the ball/detent and swichable from left to right? Doug did that per your request, correct? Great idea.

    Not completely. There may have been some thinking going on, as in planning what I was going to do. And also visualizing what I needed to see. But it was all done with detachment. No care about whether I did what I planned to do, or not. It's a difficult state to reach.

    If I don't consciously think about what I am doing then I always perform better.

I am confused as to what my sight picture should be, I first started competition shooting in the Army with an MI Garand, was taught to use 6:00 hold, Years later I entered Bullseye pistol, used irons and had to use a deep sub-6 hold, couldn't use 6:00 or center hold because of eyes.Used center hold when using red dot, fine.

    I have now added action pistol and am using mostly Glocks G23 and G20. I am not on target with the G23, I added Dawson red fiber-optic and fixed rear in my G23. It is shooting way low when using a sharp 6:00 hold, looking at top of front sight, My G20 shoots center target with 6:00 hold, about 3" high from POA. Where am I supposed to aim, sight picture and what part of sight on the fiber-optic, look at dot or top of front sight blade?

    I plan on shooting plates a lot, I don't move fast or well, age and injuries

    Both of the above guns are my carry guns also.

    This a deep subject... The military sights you used were fixed standard sights, so you are taught how to compensate for them. Today you can buy every height and width of sight you want. That being said what do you want your sights to do? They ultimately dictate what hold you will need for that gun. If not go to the Dawson Precision site, they can guide you in the buying process, to get the sights to get the most out your gun.

  11. My focal plane is constantly moving. It is different and changing based on what I am doing, the target, my confidence of getting the hit I want.

    As a generic example, waiting for the start it is at the target I want to shoot. BEEEP, as the gun is coming in front of my face the sights come into focus. Pulling the trigger focus still at sights. Time to transition as the sights are falling and focus goes to next target before the gun moves. Gun comes to eyes, focus back to sights and repeat. Time to move, eyes go to magwell opening, to spot on ground I want to be at to first target I want to shoot and then to sights. I think you get the idea.

    Simple answer, the target's relationship to your current skill level tells you where your focus should be, if you ask me.

  12. Step one in supreme recoil control is significant grip strength. You need at least 100+ lbs of grip strength in each hand to keep the gun from shifting around in your hand while it recoils. You can talk about hand, shoulder, arm, angles all you want. But without a the proper grip strength you will never realize the true potential of supreme recoil management.

  13. Good luck with this. I hope you can make it happen but if I were the CG I would reference the AMU. I would also see Uspsa as totally outside the realm of having any real military value. The last thing I would want one of my soldiers to do is wade into 16 terrorists with a pistol. :)

    Don't most grunts still carry rifles instead of pistols? What is it you want the CG to do?

    I would probably just buy a TechWear shirt and put a big screaming eagle on the back of it and go represent the unit.

    That doesn't mean that is the right answer. We have lost focus on the purpose and honestly of the sidearm. Any soldier being asked to clear rooms should have a sidearm as back up. POPs is getting soldiers killed. As for the original post, You need to brief as a benefit to DC for the tactical benefits of increasing weapon proficiency, showing the combat applications of competitive shooting. Also describing the cost saving of such a venture. When was the last time AMU came to you, or you sent someone to AMU. Get with 5th grp SFAUC committee, use them as a model. The issue will be travel expenses, weapon maintenance, ammo allocation, and always manning. Ultimately it is a tough sell. Getting units to allow soldiers to support the 10miler teams are hard enough. I agree with Sarge, buy a shirt start winning things representing the Division, and get lots of pictures then maybe the DC will care.

    I'm amazed at the number of votes to eliminate L10. Remember, there are some areas that still restrict mag capacity.

    The rules already cover that, in states with restricted capacity Limited is restricted to the state limit. Of course that doesn't cover the fact that in theory those folks can't compete at the national level due to a presumed lack of equipment.

    Of course, revolver is eliminating itself if we are honest.
