  1. Talked to S&W on the problem I had with the 38 super 686-7 firing pin not always working. They happened to mention, did not suggest .the firing pin for the .40 caliber revolver was just a tad bid longer. I put the .40 caliber firing pin in and have never had a problem since.

  2. I believe the wording, as is, is appropriate. Without that wording, the inadvertent 30 degree violation, after the shooter has complied with the unload and show clear command, would not result in a DQ. The point of the rules are safety, not how many can we throw out.

  3. I have a holster I use extensively for backcountry use. I really like it for all around versatility , it covers most of the trigger guard, but a small portion of the guard behind the trigger is exposed. The trigger is not visible. Icore rules require all the trigger guard be covered which would exclude this holster. How strictly is this interpreted?

  4. The 550 shell plate for the 38 special is cut to accommodate both a 38 with a sammi spec .058 rim and a .357 which specs .060. If you are not worried about .357 you can shave a few thousands of an inch off the bottom of the shell plate and get a more positive seating. That accompanied with turning the shell 180 degrees and pressing the primer a second time eliminated having to hand seat the loaded rounds. FYI, I did set off a Federal primer on the 550 once. Therefore I assume it can be done with a hand priming tool. Just something to think about.

  5. Empty starts are bad enough, but the Empty Chamber/Mag inserted started really hammers the revolver shooters.

Good point. I hadn't thought about that.

So, if I understand correctly, in order to comply with this starting position when shooting revolver, the shooter can only load 5 rounds (in a six shot revo) and place the empty chamber in the 12 o'clock position; correct?

Now you are inventing things, the revolver shooters simply don't fit in what you suggest. Unless you don't recognize them and send them home.

  6. Texas Stars are the worst possible combination of poppers and plates. They need to be calibrated but never are. As far as I am concerned, they are fine for fun matches, but don't belong in serious matches until some standards are adopted.

  7. Remind him of this:

10.6.1 Competitors will be disqualified from a match for conduct which a

Range Officer deems to be unsportsmanlike. Examples of unsportsmanlike

conduct include, but are not limited to, cheating, dishonesty,

failing to comply with the reasonable directions of a Match Official, or

any behavior likely to bring the sport into disrepute. The Range Master

must be notified as soon as possible.

  8. I think we are using two definitions of squib. If there is still a round in the chamber then he should never have been allowed to leave the bay until the gun had been made safe i.e. inoperable. Lots of gun type people can disassemble a gun until bagging it and leaving the bay is a safe course of action. As there is a live round or potentially one in the action somewhere, going to the safety area is inappropriate. To me that is not a squib.

If the round discharged, i.e. primer went off and the bullet stuck in the barrel or between the forcing cone and the cylinder, then ending the course of fire and the shooter going to the safety area to get out the rod and hammer poses no threat to anyone. DQing someone for looking down the barrel under that circumstance seems really excessive. To me that is a squib.

  9. Here is what I gathered from the great advice you guys gave me so far. This sounds like a checklist of things to practice.

    1. Investigate grips. I am running the stock grip on my 625. I dislike finger grooves, so I ground off the finger grooves. Yes I am that kind of cheap. I haven't found any reason to buy "nice" ones yet. I'll be looking for easier reloads, but have been warned that the recoil might feel worse.

    2. Polish the chambers on the cylinder. I don't think I had any problems there, but sometimes when inserting a new moonclip at an angle the rounds just seem like they get stuck. Now this is with my dummy rounds and it seems like the bullets are pushed in slightly. I am out of town and don't have a bullet puller, so I can't fix that yet.

    3. Become a better shot. I'll never master this, but will keep trying.

    4. Learn to count to six.

    5. "plan your reloads to get there with enough rounds in the gun to deal with it" Those sound like words to live by.

    6. "muttering obscenities while stuffing fresh sixes in the gun"

    7. "...divorce your trigger finger from the rest of your hands and let it work completely separately from everything else."

    8. "Don't start pulling the trigger until the sights are on the target." There seems to be some discussion of this item, but considering the source, it goes on the list.

    9. "Once you start pulling the trigger, do not vary your pull speed until the gun fires." Do you use the same speed of trigger pull on every shot regardless of difficulty?

    10. Strategize, move smoothly, and economize your motion. I can work on these for the rest of my life.

    11. Always shoot for A's. Maybe I should move this one to the top of the list. I usually do this, but on targets with no-shoots or targets with off balance positions I shoot center of mass of the "easy" part. Should I make the effort to gamble on shooting while off balance more often for a point or two?

    12. Do lots of reloads but don't do anything unethical like practice. Learn to do a reload on two steps. That's gonna be hard.

    13. Work on finger strength. I need to do this for my weak hand too.

    14. Don't be afraid to take a longer shot to make the stage flow better.

    15. Learn to reload with the revo high, medium and low.

    You guys are great. Thanks

The speed of the trigger pull will vary with difficulty. A 3 yard in your face target is not the same as a 50 yard target.

Not rotating the cylinder between targets? Figure on another fraction of a second between each target.

Reloading procedure between shooting positions, you will have to time yourself given your particular skills and physiology.

  10. A few strategy things...

    • Look at unconventional ways to shoot a stage. When you have less ammo per reload, don't think like the Limited guys.
    • Think six shots or less. You can sometimes give yourself more convenient reloads (on the move) if you shoot two or four. Example from yesterday: two 2-target arrays followed by three 3-target arrays - all reloads on the move.
    • Don't always shoot a target if it requires an extra reload. Another example: steel activated drop turner with two additional paper. One shot at steel, two at one paper, one at exposed drop turner, and two at the other paper. The not-shot mike on the drop turner was not scored as a mike because the target disappeared.

    Buck

It would have been scored as a mike just not a penalty mike. Also no failure to engage penalty would apply on a disappearing target.

  11. Thanks for the replies guys, I will try the Clays.

Thinking about trying the Xtreme bullets or the Precision(black) bullets in 230gr. Any opinions on either of those?

I've been through a range of powders for reasons I won't get into here but came back to 4.4 Clays with the Xtreme or Zero. I seem to have a slow bbl so start around 4.0 or below. I had very good accuracy with both the Precision and Bayou but neither will feed reliably through the Hornady feeder I have set up on my 650. Have fun - Revo is great.

I have been using Precision Delta HBWC bullets for my PPC shooting following recommendations by other shooters. The quality of the bullet seems fine, at least out to those 50 yard targets. They offer two different bullet lubes, I have just used the cheaper of the two but if I was going to be using exposed RN bullets I might look at their more expensive bullet lube as it looks less messy.

  12. No rule against it, but no rule says the request has to be granted either. At a club level if a shooter did not want me to run him I would just hand the clock to someone else and shrug. At a more structured match with assigned RO's may not be the same flexibility and the reasoning would require a higher threshold to justify shuffling staff.

    Jim

  13. In the past, I have stood firmly in the "1 per shot fired" camp, but I have another option.

How about adding some wording to the rulebook that all calls on "significant advantage" must be made by the Range Master. This will ensure that the rule is applied the same to all shooters, regardless of who is the RO. I know if I'm ever working a stage and there is any question on a SA call, I'm going to get the RM to the stage.

I think that falls under RM abuse. An experienced RO should step up to the plate and make the initial call. How can the RM deal with an appeal from the shooter if he makes the initial call?

    Jim

  14. In the world I inhabit, 4 procedurals for significant advantage regardless of the score.

I already stated outside the fault lines gave a significant advantage for ONE of the targets and 2 procedurals should be assesed for THAT target.

Are you saying that in your world any shots outside the fault lines is a significant advantage?

I am saying, that I am not going to try to fine tune the application of procedurals for the same foot fault between targets in the same string.

  15. Good product, but my understanding is they were designed for Bullseye shooting to not delay the shooting line during reloading. I use them regularly in the Police L matches and find they do that job very effectively.

They are relatively fast the first cylinder or two, however, 22's are dirty rounds and as the cylinders get gunky the rounds do not seat all the way in when released and one has to push them the extra 1/3 or so inch in. They are gravity fed like the Comp 11 and not spring fed like the Comp 111.
