Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. Not many people use this powder huh..
  2. Does anyone have any firsthand experience using this powder? I bought a pound of it last year when I was having trouble finding my first choice powder and I'd like to start using it. My all around plinking load is 3.6gr of bullseye behind a 158gr plated bullet. It was described as to me as a blend of bullseye and unique. I haven't seen an updated burn rate chart to see where it ranks. I know not to use a burn rate chart to choose powder I'm just curious where it fits in. I checked the Alliant site but I want to get the communities opinion.
  3. Do you need the locating pins after this mod? or is there enough friction caused by snugging the set screws down to keep the tool head from walking out?
  4. That's a nice looking target there. I take it you're happy with it then. How do you like those Hogue grips?
  5. Hmm...very interesting. I didn't think of that.
  6. I've been looking into these conversions for a while but before I make the leap I wanted to hear pros and cons from anyone who has had a conversion done by them. They come highly recommended for what I'm looking to do which is to take a six shot 686-4 and convert it to shoot 9mm. I sent them an email a while ago asking some questions about this process and was surprised when they told me that I won't need to change the barrel. I know the 9mm is a couple thousandths smaller than the 38 projectile but I don't if that would diminish accuracy? I inserted a handful of the 9mm projectiles in the front of the 38 cylinder and most are a little snug if not downright tight. I haven't slugged the barrel yet. I'll have to try that to see what size it comes out.
  7. Thanks for the responses. Is there a benefit to using the longslide springs as opposed to the others?
  8. I'm trying to decide between the hunter in 45 or the elite limited in 45. I'll be using it mainly for punching paper and a little friendly competition. I'm using soft target loads, and with these loads I know I'll need to use a reduced power recoil spring. However the 6" slide of the hunter seems to be a problem. Is the recoil spring the same length in both the hunter and the elite limited? I haven't seen one taken apart but I would guess that the spring on the hunter would be longer. Makes sense right? If it is and I can't find replacements that would be a deal breaker. I searched 20 pages of archives earlier today and couldn't find what I was looking for. Can somebody who owns one in 45 chime in and shed some light on this issue?
  9. The weight seems to help as the hopper gets low. Ultimately I followed Dillons advice and filled the hopper, dumped 15 charges, then weighed. Everything works great.
  10. I'd say yes. We all know that the SDB has it's limitations, but it is an excellent machine. That being said I ended up upgrading to a 550B due to my fat fingers and needing a bigger window to work in.
  11. I need to keep this thread alive because I have a few questions on this matter. Why did Dillon design the new powder funnel to have that click/clack? What purpose does it serve? If your using the old spring system do you still use the failsafe rod? That noise bothers me a little bit as well but I'm reluctant to change something without knowing why it was designed in the first place.
  12. I run four charges through the bar then I weigh it. That's the same procedure I use when I make any powder adjustments. Once the correct powder weight has been selected I will weigh every 5th charge for accuracy.
  13. What kind of press/powder measure are you using for that powder? I've read that some people have had trouble with accurate powder charges with a Dillon 550. I've got a couple of pounds of that as well and I would like to find a use for it.
  14. I'll give it a try and report back. The powder level in the hopper is about 1/3 full.
  15. I've started experimenting with some different loads using trail boss powder. I have noticed some inconsistencies in the powder charges using a Dillon 550b. I was just curious if I put a small weight on top of the powder in the hopper due to it's "fluffy" consistency would improve the charge weights. I checked the FAQ's but I couldn't find anything that addressed this issue.
