  1. I dropped the FN SLP off with Briley this morning. I am getting an action job, loading port opened, lifter modified to take off sharp forks and edges, forcing cone opened up and some high speed aftermarket parts installed, ( Nordic bolt handle, changing red to green on FO front sight, Nordic oversize bolt release button)

Work will take about 4 weeks.

Did not go for their full blown 3 gun package but got most of it. Should be GTG for our 3 gun match in August. Rick

  2. I had Ed Vandenberg build a commander ground up based on a Caspian frame and slide. I love shooting that pistol. I added another 9mm with a Springer loaded model I found at a local gun show.

  3. I ordered and received one from Midway on sale for $299. I liked it well enough to order a second one for my back up rifle before the sale price expired.

On the primary 3 gun rifle, (18" SPR) I am going with LaRue 104 mounts. I have a 3X9 scope on the same mount I use for load testing and development. On the backup rifle, I am going to try out a Burris PEPR mount.

  4. Had Ed Vandenberg build from ground up a 9mm commander that is scary accurate. It is built on a Caspian frame and slide. Problem is wife fell in love with it and it is now "her" 1911. :D

I finally found a 9mm SA loaded at a local gun show. I had Ed put some decent sights on it and slick up the action a bit. I am very pleased with the accuracy and reliability with this one too. It is my IDPA gun.

I bought Metalform 10 round mags and they work great in both guns. A friend gave me some Chip McCormick mags in .38 super as well. The latter work fine with the SA but I do get an occasional FTF on the last round in the Caspian.

  5. I had a RG cart on backorder with Midway for almost three months. I wanted the 3 gun model with the upgraded "no flat" tires and the rain cover. After waiting three months, Midway abruptly cancelled the backorder. I called to ask why and was told Rugged Gear had stopped offering that model.

I called Rugged Gear and was told not only was it still offered, I could get it in a week. It was also $10 cheaper than Midway had priced it.

I am not slamming Midway. They do a great job if the material is on the shelf but they are very poor at addressing backorders. I have had a couple bad experiences with them over backorders in the past six months.

I remain a customer but will no longer order anything from them if it is not in stock.

  6. I saw the new show on History Channel,,swamp people,,real as it gets,,your thoughts

Saw this show for the first time yesterday. I was really surprised a .22 was the weapon of choice. Believe I would want something capable of slightly larger holes.

Cajuns I have met are great people. Hard working family types who always know how to have a good time.

  7. Solution found.

First I must apologize as I was off on my first measurements of the dovetail. A better pair of glasses and some DIGITAL calipers revealed the notch to be much closer to a true .375".

Anyway, I ordered a Hi-Viz DOVM in the height of .420". It arrived today from Midway.

Installation took all of about three minutes. The old blade popped right out and the replacenment slipped right in with just a drop of break free and some gentle but firm persuasion with a brass punch and mallet. No filing period.

The sight is an awsome improvement. The FO element is big by today's standards and really stands out.

I may not be able to read calipers worth a darn but I can see that big green dot with no problem!

  8. Anybody familiar with Williams "Firesights"? It is a red optic instead of my preferred green but I can live with that.

Their ads claim they fit Remington rifle barrels with minor fitting. I would guess Remington would use the same dovetail on rifle and slug barrels.

Midway offers these for only $17.99. Think I will chance it and throw one in my next order.

  9. My search fu must be weak today. Found nothing but I can't possibly be the first to go down this path.

Factory 18" barrel with rifle sights. My eyes just do not pick up the small brass bead on top of the existing front sight. Want to swap out for fiber optic....preferrably green. .

Been searching options for a couple days now.

Best I have found so far is from Hi-Viz. It will require a gunsmith as is requires a larger dovetail than my bbl has. ( .375 vs ~ .350")

Sight is also slightly higher (.420 vs ~ .404".)

    My link

Anyone have any better ideas or suggestions? Thanks! Rick

  10. I bought a "reverse" bushing wrench kit advertised in Front Sight a couple years ago. The kit has a plastic sort of half cap to hold down the spring plug with the thumb while the metal wrench fits over the bushing from the top side.

This set up worked really well with my SS SA 1911 as it was fitted especially tight by my smith. A standard plastic wrench works, but not real well.

Well, I finally broke the darn thing today. Want to get a replacement if they are still available. Do not remember who made it. Thought someone here might know.

    Thanks in advance......Rick

  11. Unfortunately, a NO here.

After around 18 years of steady service as a club officer, RO and CRO, I was moved twice by my company. Somehow, NROI lost track of me and I lost my certification. I had too many things going on at the time , continued to shoot and RO, but let the certification slip without realizing it. (I know, my fault, but it was disheartening to me that I could get no consideration what so ever after serving our sport so long.)

Found I was no longer certified right after two days working the Space City Challenge 2006 as CRO in the rain and ankle deep mud. After numerous calls and a couple unanswered E mails to Sedro Wooley, I politely declined to take the one day RO course to become certified again. (For several reasons, my weekend spare time is limited and quite valuable to me these days)

Now I have almost left USPSA for IDPA. I do SO with IDPA and try to squad with new shooters to give them a fair introduction to action shooting.

My three year USPSA dues expire in November. Do not know if I will renew or not at this point.

I am not one that will shoot a match and walk away without helping out. FWIW, I am working Space City 2008 but not as a CRO.

  12. Sounds like a good plan.

Curious if you considered an STI? Pretty good guns, close to custom imo. Don't know how much you'll have into your caspian? Anyways, they certainly support the sport.

Looked them over, seriously considered ordering one from Dawson, then decided I wanted something really special. Personally, I have never really warmed up to the looks of STI guns myself.

Anyway, I had a sizeable credit from Midway on a green laser unit I had returned, plus my FFL "owed" me as he had talked me out of my G34 in trade for the SA that never materialized.

Finally, I have been fondling the 1911s Ed Vanden Berg brings to the big gun shows down here. Man, he does nice work! Ed always donates a gun or two to the Space City Challenge match here in Houston too.

Suddenly, I had the ducks in a row to buy the parts and pieces and go the custom route. Rick
