Slide show of the progression of the man cave/reloading room. Not really in order; the cabinets had no shelves first and just put those in this past week. In addition to the reloading area and workbench, there is a pool table, a snooker table, a 1971 Ranchero and 2 feral cats that I have only caught a glimpse of after neutering. The counter tops are cleaned up as of this afternoon. It is not shown, but on the left side of the bench with the Dillon sits my portable air compressor so I can stop using my wife's canned air for the computer and to the left of it a 32" flat screen tv and a stereo/cd/ipod player with speakers. The interior walls are all blue stained pine.

  2. Imagine this - another question from bigarm! I have been using Federal No. 100 Small Pistol Primers for my 40 loads. I am down to one box of 100 left and need to load more 40's for matches. I bought 4000 Winchester Primers some time back and I now notice that they are for small magnum pistol loads (WSPM). Will these primers be okay or do I need to get regular small pistol primers. Since I am broke at the moment, I hope these will be fine, but let me know please.

  3. I've been shooting a bunch of the 9mm 147 and 230gr .45. I just got some 200gr .40's in and am hoping to test some loads with those later today.

200 gr 40's are what I ordered. I will be interested in your results, although I will be using CFE.

  4. Picked up some at a local match so far they seem to work well, had to open the bell mouth when I reloaded them to avoid shaving. Don't forget as a member of the forum we get a 5% discount.

How much did you open the bell? I have been using black bullet internationals. Would I still need to open more? I don't want to overdue it. And thanks for the reminder, I did ask for the discount.

  5. Anyone have experience with these? I was strongly considering the WFT. My wife even bought me a cordless drill to use with it. I then saw the new Giraud Tri Way Trimmer posted on a forum. They seem to be very similar. The Giraud is about $20 more but it says it chamfers also and comes with a plastic chip guard. (people seem to make their own from a pop bottle or something for the WFT).. The Giraud says "Solid aluminum housing to support the trimming process in any orientation, horizontal, vertical or any position in between." but when I read the instruction manual it said it should be used either pointed down or somewhat down. Seems that would make it a little harder to trim if you had to hold the drill pointed down rather than resting on the battery. Anyway, let me know what you know or think.

  6. I have been working on one for a while. I am interested in what others are carrying. In addition to most of the above, I have a small spray can of Ballistol, q tips, take down tool for the recoilmaster, bushing wrench for my wife's Les Baer, extra batteries for red dots, etc., bore snakes, small needle nose pliers,. Might be a couple of other things. I will have to look when we are home again. Everything fits in the smallest Stanley tool box I could find at Wal-Mart.

    checked it out, also have:

small regular pliers, headlamp, replacement fiber optics

  7. Don't buy powders you don't use. You're contributing to the lack of available powders. Someone who loads with those just missed out because you purchased them and don't even know what they're for. Look at a reloading manual to answer your question and thanks for keeping the powder unavailable.

I don't usually respond to such posts, but in this case I will make an exception. I bought a couple of pounds of powder because it was available. I don't think that was the crime of the century, but thanks for taking your valuable time to respond. It is very much appreciated.

  8. Not going in at all is probably a burr or nick on the rim. The others are probably just not sized low enough. The Udie might work but I would like to clarify that you are Lubing the cases. Dry cases will bulge at the bottom under stress of sizing.

Another test is to size some brass and leave them empty and see if they all gauge. Then load them and see if they are now not gauging

I sized some brass and all of it fit the gauge. I reduced the bell and changed the crimp. I took a factory winchester 230 grain fmj and duplicated the crimp on it (or pretty close) which was less crimp than I was using. These changes reduced my case failure rate by probably close to 75% and the ones that would not fit in the case gauge were closer than before. Probably half of those that didn't fit the gauge the first time, did after I ran through the crimp die again. The few that won't fit I will use as practice rounds and I think they will most likely work fine.

  9. I am new to this also. Just started 3 gun (USPSA also) this year and I agree if you can use a pouch of some sort, go for it. If you like the sport, then you can look for caddy options. There are a ton out there and they are not cheap. I am using Invictus Practical 2.8 caddies and like them, but they are not cheap!

  10. Yes I am using homemade lube of liquid lanolin and alcohol. Maybe I should put it on thicker, but it is certainly noticeable when I use it. I will try sizing brass and see if they gauge. I appreciate the help. I realize that I am asking a lot of questions, but I am learning a great deal. The learning curve is much quicker with all this help. I kind of like this retirement so I have time to do this. Miss the money though.

  11. What dies do you suggest for loading .223 on a Dillon 550 b? I see that Dillon has two different sets, one with a full length carbide sizing die and the other not. Is that the only difference and is the more expensive set needed? I have looked at other brands and many of them are two die sets/ Why?

  12. Try to put a loaded round in the gauge backwards. Being straight walled it will slip in, If it barely goes then it is the base of the round that is the problem.

You may have used the LEE seating die for a few reasons. It's cheap. It's got a fine thread adjustment to it compared to the Dillon course threads that was a total PITA to adjust in fine increments.

I tried to put the rounds in backwards that did not go into the case gauge. Some would barely go in, some would go in about half way and two wouldn't go in at all. So, what does that mean? Thanks for the help.

  13. I worked with the sizing die and readjusted it, but still getting ones that don't pass the gauge test. For now, as someone said, I will use those as practice rounds. I may try adjusting the crimp, but I am not quite sure why too much crimp would cause it not to fall into the case gauge. My wife is much more observant than I am and says that it is the bottom of the brass that is the hang up. I am using a Dillon 550 b and Dillon dies. Would a U die in the first station make a difference? I am using one with my 40's because I did not have dies and it was suggested so I got one for that set and a Dillon taper crimp die and it seems like I have a Lee seating die, although I am not sure why I chose that one at this time. There must have been a reason! I just can't remember it!

  14. I changed to the large primer slide to load 45 acp. The primer slide seems not to be going all the way back to pick up the next primer. I can move it back with my hand and it picks up the primer. Not a huge problem as I am going slowly anyway, but would be nice to work properly. I have done a little searching on this forum. It seems that several things are mentioned including lubing the slide with dry lube (which I am pretty sure I did, although I can do this again), bending the bar, polishing the slide and other parts. Which should I try first and how do you bend the bar and polish the parts?

  15. I was loading some (100) 45 acp rounds yesterday. Some of those, maybe 10 or less, would not go fully into the case gauge. They were all close. After finishing, I put the rounds that did not pass through the seating and crimp dies again and about half of those then passed. Took the last few (4 I think) and had my wife run them through her Les Baer. They fed and shot fine. Should I adjust anything or leave as is? It would be nice if all passed the gauge test, but I am not sure that is necessary. If I change anything, would it be the crimp die or something else?
