  1. I deprime on a $20 Lee C press so the bulk of the dirt and primer fouling doesn't get into the ram of my "good" Lee Challenger O press.

I also run an oil bath around the ram of all my presses with Mobil 1. It keeps things running smooth and lets me wipe away contaminants before the wear at the bore of the press...I hope.

I do the exact same thing. Saves all that crap from getting in my Lyman T-Mag. I haven't deprimed as much as Steve RA, but I've deprimed close to half (15k to 20k) and I've seen some degredation on that little $25 press. It's definitely getting sloppy. I'll use it till it breaks off the bench, then just buy another.

  2. I see inconsistencies as well using a Lyman turret press and what I think i have found in my case (again I think) is when I'm placing the bullet on top of the belled case during the seating process, sometimes it's not sitting perfectly straight (vertically). Sometimes its sitting crooked 10 - 15 degrees (i'm guessing) one way or another. The seating die straightens it out as it seats it down into the case but I'm wondering if that "off" angle is throwing it off - seating it deeper or shallower by a few thousandths. Maybe its the profile of the inside of my Lee seating die. Again, Im not sure but I've found that if the bullets are sitting perfectly straight on the top of the case, my OAL inconsistancies are alot less. Just my two cents.

  3. Another help for me before I went to my first USPSA match was a video podcast, the Power Factor Show. It has been coming out every week for a couple of years now. It really helped explain the basics, and the video made it easy to see what they were talking about. I download the podcast, but you can watch on youtube as well.

+1 here, I learned alot from those guys. Highly reccomend for beginners in either IDPA or USPSA

  4. Man, all i have is a Lyman T-mag 2 turret press. It's a wonderful press and will last longer than I'll live for sure. I can crank out some beautifull looking and performing rounds. Its very precise but it takes me forever to make large quantities of ammo. The absolute fastest I can safely make is about 100 rds per hour. And that is after the brass is deprimed, cleaned and resized.

I want a progressive press. LOL

Holds out a collection plate

  5. As stated above, Glock gamer triggers and CCI primers is the recipe for unreliability.

I can confirm. My Glocks all have stock triggers and i have only used CCI primers. I've never used another brand after 1000's of rounds and I've never had a light strike issue.

  6. Thanks for the info.

In the 9mm its rather dirty as well but I'm not afraid of a little cleaning. Very soon, this 8lb jug of SR4756 will be all I have, so I will have to make do. Powder pickens are slim around my neck of the woods.

  7. I use it in my XDm 4.5 40S&W. 6.5gr, 180gr berry's FP, 1.28-1.30 OAL. Mixed head stamp, CCI primer.

IIRC, somewhere in the 900-950 FPS range, but I'd need to check my loading journal to be sure

    Thanks Ropsitos,

I will have damn near the same components. The only difference is I have 180gr Rainiers FP. Close enough though. I will start a little lower and work my up. Hows the accuracy for you? Is the power residue dirty after shooting, Any flash?

  8. I see a lot of responses on what people do my main concern are thief's I hate them.

Your garden variety thief has no clue what reloading components are. They want guns, jewlery, money, electronics etc. Just remember to aim for the "A" (down zero) zone when they enter your domain. I know its tough without a buzzer.

  9. Works great in .40 S&W, I don't have a .40 but my shooting partner does and that is all he uses. 6 gr with 180s and 7 gr with 155s. Both LSWCs.

This is in a Glock but I have no idea what his OAL is.

Good to hear... I will try it soon - Within the week or so. My press is set up for 9mm right now... My daughter is keeping me busy making 9mm. She shoots it faster than I can make it..LOL. But on the other hand, I love that she's enjoying it so much.

  10. 3D Jedi, I'm shooting damn near the same load out of a G35 with 9mm LW conversion barrel. My accuracy isn't too far off from yours. 3" to 4" groups at 25 yds.

    124gr Ranier plated RN

    5.0gr IMR SR4756

    CCI spp

    OAL 1.15

I don't have any chrono data though.

  11. I've never used E3 but in my case with using Bluedot (big flaky powder) through a Lyman #55 meter, I saw inconistantances that rivaled yours - .4. to .5 grains. It scared me in the beginning but with BlueDot, a slower burning powder, I could barely tell the difference when shooting. When I changed to a smaller ball powder (Like IMR-PB) I saw very little inconsistancies and if so, they we +.1 to -1.

  12. I got lucky and found 8 pounds of SR4756 at a gun show recently for very cheap and I'm very happy with this load below: It's a little dirty in my Glock, but not too bad.

    124gr Rainier plated RN

    5.0gr SR4756

    CCI spp

    OAL - 1.15

I'm curious as to how thispowder will run in .40 S&W. I haven't tried it yet.

  13. I had the same issue as you SSgt82-02 only I transitioned from a 1911 to a glock.. I'm still to this day not happy with my shooting (with the different trigger pull, weight imbalance and different grip angle) but over time, I have improved greatly. I keep telling myself I will finally get it and I am getting closer but I'm still a better shot with a 1911.

  14. Whats the most times anybody ever got on avg loading a particular head stamp?

I used to try and keep up on this but I loose my brass to other reloaders at the range. They pick up mine, I pickup thiers...It's a never ending cycle so I just gave up and load what I get.. I've never had any real issues.

  15. I have experienced some stubborness when resizing on my Lyman Tmag press and yes - using lube did solve my problem but that slows the reloading proccess way down, plus makes things a little more messy and sticky. Granted not alot more but enough annoy me. The trick I have found to bypass using lube is in the tumbling. Use one of these two products in your tumbling media. Either Nu Finish car polish or Mineral Spirits. Both of these work very well but I myself prefer mineral spirits. Number one its cheaper and number two it does a better job removing powder residue. The Nu Finish will definity make your Brass shinyer though. But both products will leave your brass nice and slick and smooth. This made a huge difference when resizing my brass.

Isn't mineral sprits a petroleum product? if so wouldn't this affect the powder, primer?

    Jeff

Jeff, I'm not sure if its a petroleum product or not, maybe so. I was skeptical as well at first but I tried it anyway. I had purchased 12lbs of tumbler media on ebay from a fellow reloader. It was his reccomendation to add a 1/4 cup of mineral spirits per pound of his media which consists of crushed walnut and corn cob. I was blown away with the results. Very clean, very shiney brass. As far as effecting powder or primers, I always deprime my cases before tumbling and the cases are always dry when I remove them from the tumbler. It's not like theyre drowning in it. Anyway, here is a link to guy on ebay selling his media if anyone is interested. I wouild highly reccomend to anyone. I've cleaned thousands of rounds using his media and mineral spirits.

How well does it do with the insides of the case and the primer pockets?

Not bad at all (occasionally get a little media stuck in the primer pockets). Of course it depends on the brass. Once fired brass looks brand new when I'm done with them but really old brass that has been half buried for weeks or months at the range .. they require a little more attention.

  16. Oh sorry for the confusion. I bought a glock 19 last week for CCW. I changed the sights to the speed sights (speedsight.com) with trijicon. The trigger I left in stock form but I may go ahead a do a 25 cent job on it. I plan on getting a glock 17 for home defense duty and for tactical classes. Not sure which sights I will get or trigger if any. Again, may just do a 25 cent job.

Now, for competition I was thinking glock 34. I could use it for IDPA ESP, USPSA production (or limited minor) and for 3-gun. I was kind of thinking I wanted to keep all my guns of the same caliber (9mm) just so I could stock one ammo type for pistols. And so all magazines would be compatible. Seems it would be convenient. But now I'm reconsidering a glock 35 for competition. I could use 40 minor for IDPA and 3-gun. But now we're talking keeping 9mm, .40 major, .40 minor and different mags for 9mm and 40. There's also the option of a glock 35 for limited and then sticking a 9mm barrel in for IDPA esp and 3-gun. So many options! But one of the reasons I picked glocks was for all of the options and for the cheap mags! I'm really have a hard time deciding between the 34 and 35 now..........

Now I'm also thinking of going with the DK Custom........

I was in a simalar dilema, choosing between a G34 and a G35 for IDPA and a G23 and a G19 for carry. I chose the G35 and G23 combo (.40 cal) and later on purchased aftermaket 9mm barrels and magazines to go plinking with a cheaper round. It's like having 4 different pistols for just a little more than the price of 2..... just my 2 cents.

    hope this link works.

  18. If it were me, I'd load a handful at a low power charge and chrono / group shoot them on a target to see how they worked.

If every thing went well then I'd work up to a "pet load" for that projectile then load them up and use them for practice ammo.

I came across a "good buy" for 6K of bullets that I wouldn't see again and found a load that worked pretty well, That bullet had an odd profile that caused me to need to load them really short for my chamber but I backed off the charge and ended up with some pretty good ammo at a bargain price.

    Be safe, and go slow.

I made out pretty decent, I got about 4500 bullets, 4 pounds of Unique, 4 pounds of VihtaVouri, an RCBS beam scale, a couple thousand 9mm cases and about a 1000 .45 cases, 50 rounds of factory .45, a dillon bullet puller and a few other odds and ends for 150$ All in all not a bad day, especially if I can get these bullets to work. Thanks for the info, i will try to load a few and see what happens, if I cant use them perhaps I can trade them to someone who can. I was just hoping these would work.

    Also 500 actual rainier 9mm 124g hollowpoints.

    1000 small pistol primers

I agree with eveyone else. Load a handfull and shoot em, just be careful. Regardless, you stole that gear for $150. Congrats.
