  1. On my guns anyways I should have said the .300 is just right instead of barely tall enough. I would rather have the rear sight down almost as low as it will go than have to raise it to get a zero.

  2. .300 tall sight is normally used for that dawson adjustable

I have the Dawson adjustable on two different Glocks and the .300 is just barely tall enough on both of them. Front sights are relatively cheap and relatively easy to install.

  3. I don't have any with the micrometer seating die although I think it would be handy for some applications and overkill for others.

If you should happen to buy Redding pistol dies make sure you order the right ones. They have one set that has an expander die (which you won't need for the 1050) and the other set exchanges the expander die for a separate crimp die.

  4. I feel more comfortable shooting left to right. I don't have solid data to prove I'm better shooting that way though. I'm right handed and shoot with my right eye closed. I don't have a strongly dominant eye but my left eye focuses better on the sight.

When I was a little kid I tried to get my left eye over the sights of my bb gun. I wish my dad would have trained me to shoot left handed.

  5. Mark,

Any chance you can link up the data you referred to on bullet fragmentation? I am interested in reading it, especially anything that addresses less than smooth surfaces.

There were two fairly nasty strikes at the last match I was at which has increased my interest in this topic.

I would be real interested to see the difference, if any, in the targets ya'll are using and the ones we are using. I've only been shooting steel challenge for a little less than two years, 21 matches or so. I've never been hit hard by a frag and have not heard of anybody else getting hit. A piece of bullet jacket will usually flutter down on me from above once or twice a match.

  6. I shoot 115 grain. Not a real good reason other than is what I started with. I have loads that I like and are accurate so I just stick with it.

My brother just switched over to 147 grain and they are softer shooting. We both shoot Glocks with stock recoil springs.

  7. I am already planning to trade one of my existing pistols for a G21.

You should look at a G30 also. You could shoot heavy metal and major subcompact with it. Several of the top guys around here do that and I don't really think you give up much over the G21. That said, I'm using my prize pistol certificate for a G21.

  8. I thought about shooting 5 to Glock 3,2,1,5,4 but I watched several guys tank doing that and decided left to right was the right choice for me. I am going to practice this set up some more in the future.

When I walked up to that stage and saw it I probably should have walked away and pondered it for a bit longer. My first thought was "this is jacked up", and didn't really see a better way to go.

I have also seen the same V type set up where the open end of the v was towards the shooting box with two close targets, two middle, and one far. That I shot left to right and it was much more comfortable and faster.

  9. The 5 to Glock that was set had the number 1 and 5 targets at 20 yards with a wide spread, the 2 and 4 targets at 10 yards, also fairly wide and the number 3 target at 5.

The real issue with all of this was that I had not practiced anything that involved a first shot on a long target. That is on me for not being prepared for that skill. I will definitely work on that in the future.

That is exactly how they had it set up when I learned for the first time that they could be set up differently. I shot it 3, 2,1, 5, 4 which seemed to work fairly well.

Double check the rules on shooting more than two entries back to back. Unless they have an "express bay" set up you might not be able to.

I have found the best way to get in and out of a match is to be there 30-45 minutes before the stated registration time on Sunday morning.

  10. Some matches are doing just that. Well.....not really banning them. I was talking to Jim O'Young down at US Steel Nationals in Florida and he mentioned that they were doing a low-ready centerfire division this year at the West Coast Steel Championships. I briefly perused the scores after he posted them and saw that they had a half dozen or so people entered that division. Not a bad idea, especially for new shooters that might be intimidated by the draw.

Anybody is welcome to shoot the novice division at Griffin Gun Club which is from low ready. It doesn't really get a lot of participation though. I don't see any downside to allowing it.
