SVI could build you a commander sized double stack 10mm with a steel grip, just saying
I'm sure SVI can build you a commander how ever you would like, and I'm sure it will be awesome. I would go with a bull barrel for 10mm, if I were you. You could always do a second barrel in .40 with a bushing for gun games, so your good where a bull barrel isn't allowed and you won't have to look for your brass
Dan Wesson used to make 10mm commanders, not sure if they still do
I was thinking of Fusion but heard of more than a few people not happy with theirs. Ended up ordering a custom stainless commander sized 10mm double stack short block (with a stainless grip) from one of BE's Vendors. Much more affordable than SVI and a considerably shorter wait.
The reason for the single stack instead of double is that I want something more slim and concealable than my G19. Plus you just can't hate a 1911 for comfort and style. You mention going with a bull barrel for 10mm. What is the advantage over a bushing in this caliber? I have a Limited gun in .40 already so that game is covered. I was thinking more along the lines of running a second gun at matches in Single Stack just for kicks if I felt like it, or perhaps ESP in IDPA with it.

As I mentioned in the 10mm thread, I have an itch I'm looking to scratch. I'm looking at ordering an SVI single stack as a carry gun to replace my G19, and the 10mm itch has hit me. What's the consensus on a 10mm in a Commander length pistol? Also to make it a little different I considered a sight tracker barrel for this build as well. If a sight tracker isn't viable or capable of the longevity due to the caliber, then a bushing barrel so I can use it in some class of shooting sport if I chose. I submitted two build sheets to SVI today for build quotes and for advice on the caliber/platform combination. I also used the search going back a couple years but there isn't much that addresses the 10 for a CCW choice. Help me spend my money on this and let me hear your opinions.

I'm really getting the itch to get a 10mm. At the same time I'm really getting the itch to throw down on an SVI. At the same time I'm pretty bored with my G19 daily carry gun. Perhaps a commander size 10mm SVI for carry? I think I could handle carrying the same old CCW for 15-18 more months...I also think it's about to get expensive around here shortly...

Add Giordano's to the list. Several around Chicago, usually try to hit one up near Wrigley when I can swing up for a game. And they will ship overnight to you. You'll pay a pretty penny, but if you're jonesing for one it'll hit the spot.

Anything for this bullet with N320 or 3N37?

Just got back from range round two this morning:
Precision Delta RNFP 180gr jacketed
Winchester brass and SPP
VV N320 4.8gr
OAL 1.18"
Avg velocity 897
PF= 161
Precision Delta RNFP 180gr jacketed
Winchester brass and SPP
VV N320 5.0gr
OAL 1.18"
Avg velocity 919
PF= 165

Hit the range with the chrono yesterday, all went well. Here was the end result:
Gun is a 5" LDC CCG Limited.
Load 1:
Precision Delta RNFP 180gr jacketed
Winchester brass and SPP
VV N320 4.4gr
OAL 1.18"
Avg velocity 776
PF= 139
Load 2:
Precision Delta RNFP 180gr jacketed
Winchester brass and SPP
VV N320 4.6gr
OAL 1.18"
Avg velocity 827
PF= 148
Load 3:
Precision Delta RNFP 180gr jacketed
Winchester brass and SPP
VV 3N37 6.0gr
OAL 1.17"
Avg velocity 836
PF= 150
All in all not too bad for my first reloads ever. Did have some large variations between shots in a couple strings, some I'm sure was on my part loading, but my chrono sat in direct sunlight and if I understand that can have an effect as well. 3N37 seemed to have the most perceived recoil, although not significantly greater than the N320, but noticeable. I've been shooting a Glock 19 in production with factory ammo and that seems to have significantly more recoil than any of these did. Going to load up some more rounds shortly and use my day off wisely...at the range...

LegionShooter,
I would be interested in what you find (change in velocity) using the two different ammo's (1.215 and 1.180 OAL) of 180 gr projectiles.
Interested to see the spreads on yours.
Ran the 1.18s yesterday but haven't run the 1.21s yet. I'll put up the spreads once I do though.

if i were you, i would adjust the seating die to the desired OAL for each bullet, not use one die setting for different bullets.
Understood. If I decide to run both the PDs and the BBIs at 1.18 though, would I have to adjust powder charge to compensate for lesser case volume? Or is the difference not enough to be concerned with since both are 180gr bullets?

Headed out to test fire first reloads tomorrow. I have PD 180 RNFP that are set at 1.178 (reading between 1.176 and 1.180 when I measure them). I just ran some dummy rounds with BBI 180s that are reading 1.215 with same seating die. If I reset the die to get the BBI to 1.18 OAL how much do I need to worry about the decrease in case volume causing pressure issues?
I'll be working up a load for 3N37 and now for N320 which I just got from FedEx about 10 minutes ago. How many different powder charges does everyone tend to take to the range on the first go and in what increasing increments?

$20-$30 for an OSX or iOS operating system compatible app.

How did this work? The zip file opens to an .exe file that isn't readable by OSX. I bought the software CD with the chrono thinking I'd be gtg but may be sending it back.

I'm using the standard Dillon seating die that came with my 550 setup. I'm using the smaller of the two ends of the insert. As a side note I also have some BBI 180s which seat to a noticeably longer OAL than the PDs do. I only loaded a few dummy rounds with those as I don't want to adjust everything until I'm out of the PDs. Again, not quite sure why the difference unless it's just the bullet shape thats causing it. As for powder charge there was no airflow and all readings were stable so the static makes sense. I'll probably just stick with leaving the cover off from here on out.

Well I just ran my first batch of reloaded ammo. Everything seemed to go alright and it took forever to run 50 rounds because I was manic about double checking OAL, powder charge, and crimp. So after all the reading websites and manuals I set my first batch at an OAL of 1.178, using Precision Delta 180gr over 6.0gn of VV 3N37, which is all I have at the moment. I had some things that I questioned along the way so maybe one of you has an answer for me.
I set the OAL on the press with dummy rounds at 1.178. I ended up with rounds ranging from 1.175" all the way to 1.181" I re-ran the 1.181" back through the seating die and they came out to 1.179"-1.180". Is this from inconsistent pull on the handle of the press? Or is this just the way I'm holding the rounds in the micrometer that provide variations in the measurements?
I spot checked powder charges and got a low of 5.97gn and a high of 6.03gn on the scale. The scale has a wind cover which I didn't use, although when I weighed the same charge it was very different with the cover on. As an example a 6gn charge without the cover on weighed 5.7 with it on. Why is this? I calibrated and rechecked using a test weight without the cover and all seemed good.
I checked about every five rounds for crimp and it came out to a very consistent .421"
This weekend will be the big test. Chrono comes tomorrow and I'll test fire and record what I have. I'm feeling like I won't make major PF on this batch, but it'll be a good start point. Have to admit I'm pretty nervous to run my own ammo through this expensive of a gun for the first time. Hopefully this feeling will pass with time and experience on the bench. Is it a good idea to take factory ammo to compare to my hand loads, or to have on hand in case the gun won't function reliably on what I produced (or to put through the gun as it's first rounds anyway)? I'll take all advice, this is my first reload, my first Limited gun, and my first time shooting it since I got it. I'd hate to blow it up on the first go round.

picked up 8 lbs and by the time I completed my order and got a confirmation email I checked back and it was gone...people aren't kidding when they say you have to get lucky to catch some...

As of 1145 Central PV has some back in stock...just ordered 8 pounds

Just popped up, thought everyone may want to know...

Loading for a CCG 2011. OAL was gtg for mags and chamber. Completely understand the attention to detail with reloading and tolerances, perhaps it was a poor choice of words. 1.155 OAL will give me more case volume than the standard 1.13 in the manual so using the same powders and data at the factory length will give me less pressure. Was going to use that as my starting point before I tried to load out long. Let me know if I'm on the right track. FYI I ended up with Winchester SPP and the only powder I could find in stock specifically mentioned in either of my manuals was VV 3N37.

So I have my 550b set up and everything ready to go, minus powder. I almost had 4lbs of Power Pistol ordered until I discovered that Natchez SS doesn't sell or ship to TN, so now it's back to square one...any last minute advice before I press my first live rounds? I've loaded a handful of dummy rounds to check chamber function and get the press set. Currently using Winchester brass with 180gr Precision Delta loaded to 1.155" OAL. I took the manual's measurement and split it with the most popular OAL on the forum which seems to be 1.18". Using Win SP primers whenever I get to load live.

I second the BMW touring idea of a few others, but only as a second to the Ducati Hyperstrada. Upright position, comfy seat, bags you can remove if you want to take day trips only...and a key factor for comfort, light weight! About 380 pounds-ish, as compared to some of the other mentioned touring bikes at 600-800 plus. Good mileage to them...and they look awesome:

Is there a reason you're building an AR pistol with a 10-14" barrel length? Just wondering why not pay the SBR tax and make it a good rifle, especially with what you want to do with it. Either way be advised that any shorter barrel length with a muzzle device is going to be loud with lots of concussion in almost any environment minus wide open range while standing.
-
I have a 1/8 Rainier and a 1/8 White Oak and use 55gr XM193 mostly for 3-gun. I have 1/7 barrels also. For me 1/8 is the best option for the 55gr bullets and it shoots 63 and 69 well too. I don't use 75 or 77 grain for 3-gun so the faster twist doesn't really matter to me.

So it would seem my girlfriend decided I was worthy of a big present this year for the birthday...I have a 550 Top Notch package on the way from the BE store...awesome! Here come the bullet, case, primer, and powder selections...more research than i know what to do with.
-
Yep, the new gun is a custom built on an STI frame. Will add a good chrono as suggested, the powder scale comes with the package from the BE store. Bullet selection I'm undecided and everyone has had an opinion. If I go jacketed it'll likely be MG 180s. If I go coated it'll probably be BBI 180s.

Haha! Yeah, what's one mm really do for you anyway? As for the reason I don't just go with .45, well I have a Kimber in .45 and I just want something a little different. The 10 has always had my attention, just never quite enough to get one over a "standard" caliber. I also considered going with 38 Super as they both have a wide range of bullet options, but I already reload for .40 so...10 won out.
I'm excited to hear some more opinions and to hear what SV and company say when I get a reply email. Less excited about a long wait, but what can you do?
