  1. I am getting tight primer pockets with my fired 40 S&W brass in a S&W 610 . After about 3 or 4 firings the primer pockets seem to get tighter and when I seat a Federal primer it will start to crush or it will shave brass from the pocket . I use single headstamp  once fired brass from a reliable source and it doesn't matter if it is Win, R-P , or Federal . I have not tried new Starline brass .I am loading 4.5 grs N-320 with a 180 gr Ibejiheads coated LRN bullet with a 1.145 OAL.

I'm thinking it has to do with the convex firing pin bushing S&W uses as my fired primers are very flattened when I know it isn't pressure signs.

I was wondering if anyone else has run into this ?

  2. I have not tried Prima V in 45 acp with a 200 gr. bullet but did wok up a load using Prima V and HS Bullets 230 gr. coated RNFP bullet 4.1 grs gave me 755 fps with a ES of 27 . These were seated at 1.185"  because the HS bullet had a weird ogive and I needed that OAL for my 5" Trojan . It was a soft clean burning load.

  3. I was at LGS today and saw a new IMR powder "Target" and picked up a pound to try in 45 acp . My current load for my 625 rev is 230 gr. RN Blue Bullet over 3.6 grs of Nitro 100 NF which makes 160 PF (fine for IDPA). I have heard that Target is similar to Bullseye but was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with it ? IMR shows 4.3 grs as minimum load for 230 lead bullet with 1.20 as OAL but velocity seems very high (I think they listed 800 fps for this load ?).

  4. Ended up putting about 50 rounds through P-10 before dark this evening . I was shooting a plate rack at 16 yds and it shot POA with some 9mm ammo I had in truck. Out of the 50 rounds I had about 10 FTE mostly shooting weak hand only . It appeared to be short stroking . So, not really off to a great start with the P-10 but I'll clean it tonight and lube . I'm thinking the factory recoil spring is on the stout side . The ammo I had in the truck was 130 PF . I may have to up the powder and see if that helps the FTE problem.

Oh...it did fit my IDPA CCP box with room to spare.

  5. I got an email notification today that my pre-ordered P-10c was waiting on me to pick it up at local Cabela's store . I have just returned from picking it up and haven't shot it yet or checked to see if it will fit IDPA CCP box but just wanted to post that I had received mine .  I can follow-up with a range report if anyone is interested.

  6. I used to use TG with a 185 gr. plated bullet for practice and plinking but found that at 5.5 grs cases were really sooty and switched to TiteWAD for 200 gr. and under bullets and Ramshot Competition for 230 gr. bullets . That said I'm now loading Nitro 100 NF and am really liking it . Soft recoil relatively clean and meters much better than e3, Clay Dot and Clays in my Dillon powder measure.

  7. I have purchased 9mm , 40 cal and 45 cal. HS bullets and I ended up having to seat all of them with a shorter OAL than other coated bullets I've used . I expected higher pressure and increased velocity so I backed off my load some which is smart to do anytime I change bullets but found the reduced load wasn't really necessary . I found the HS bullets to be very consistent and all of them were coated nicely . Really the only complaint I've had with HS  bullets is the packaging when shipped . They came in a plastic bag which was split open with bullets scattered all over the inside of the box . The 45 and 40 cal. bullets the shipping box had been split open as well as the bag holding the bullets and I ended up short ten or fifteen bullets that had fell out of the box . The 9mm bullets had split the bag holding them but all of them made it to my loading bench. I would purchase HS bullets again as the price is very competitive if not for the packaging.

  8. I've decided to finally classify in Revolver Class in one of the local IDPA classifiers that are usually held early in the season. So, I've been trying to work up a soft accurate 45 acp load above the 155 PF for my S&W 626 PC . I have not previously loaded Prima SV in 45 acp but went with what I knew from loading 9mm . Usually with Prima V in 9mm I can use Titegroup data and get almost the exact velocity and for Prima SV I usually back off 2 tenths of a grain of a good Prima V load. I haven't been able to find any Prima SV data for 45 acp so I took what I knew from loading it in 9mm and started with 3.6 grs Prima SV , Bayou 255 gr. RN seated at 1.252" OAL in Starline brass with a Federal 150 primer . Fired brass showed no signs of pressure . Chrono results at 38 degrees F :

1st string 6 shots HI 681 fps LO 643 fps 665 fps AVG 38 fps ES 38 fps  3 1/2 " group at 20 yds hands rested on sandbags

2nd string 6 shots HI 683 fps LO 647 fps AVG 671 fps 36 fps ES 36 fps  3" group at 20 yds

I am well above the 155 PF at 170 PF (avg)  but the load felt really good but I was a little disappointed with the ES numbers and accuracy wasn't the best but at least I have a good starting point and need to really shoot a few hundred at different distances to see how I like it.

I would be interested in anyone else's results with Prima SV in 45 acp .

How long has Nitro 100 NF been around?  Is the old stuff still available?

JON, this is from Accurate's FAQ page :

We unfortunately had to change the manufacturer for Nitro 100 early in 2009.

This was due to factors outside our control.

We thus do not source our Nitro 100 for the EU (Czech Rep) anymore.

It’s now made in the USA by General Dynamics®.

It’s still a double base powder but it’s a flattened spherical (ball) powder instead of the original extruded flake design.

I have seen jugs of the old Nitro 100 in the reloading rooms of some of the shotgunners I know but I don't think the old formulation has been for sale for a while now .

Until the outdoor temperatures change here in Virginia I will not know how temperature sensitive Nitro 100 NF is and I am reluctant to load up a bunch of 45 ACP ammo only to find it is below PF in the summer matches.

  10. I just tried my first jug of Nitro 100 NF loading 3.6 grs with a 230 gr. LRNFP coated HS bullet at 2.185" OAL . The load chronoed 746 fps with an ES of 30 . The temperature was between 22 and 24 degree's F and was just wondering how temperature sensitive Nitro 100 is and if it is reverse temp sensitive like WST (it sure looks a whole lot like WST) ?

    Thanks

  11. VZ doesn't advertise it but they will make "hollow back" grips for you . It is a extra charge ... I think $35 extra but if you ask them they will do it . I first noticed hollowed out grip panels on my Wilson Combat Compact Carry Professional 9mm 1911 they made for the new IDPA CCP Division . With factory grips the pistol weighed just under the limit of 37 oz. with a 10 rd. Wilson mag with plastic basepad . Later I replaced the factory grips and could not make weight until I realized the factory wood grip panels were hollowed out .

I don't know much about tumbling/keyholing issues w/ reloaded ammo...I didn't even know this could be an issue.  But upon reading the OP, you mentioned that the tumbling ceases the dirtier your barrel gets.  Have you slugged your barrel for the best bullet diameter for your barrel?

I was wondering the same thing that MissionaryMike has stated about the problem ceases with a dirty barrel . Every time I have had tumbling issues with 147 gr. coated or especially 147 plated bullets it was due to bullet getting sized down during reloading either by having too much crimp or seating the bullet too far into the case (into the thick part of case wall) and I have also had problems using a Lee Factory Crimp die sizing the bullet down but usually my problem was seating a bullet too deep for a short throated chamber like a CZ chamber. In every case I've had with tumbling 147 bullets it was a bullet having too small a diameter.

  13. I recently shot what was supposed to be a 10 stage IDPA Tier 2 match where everyone started with a "Stage 11" from whatever stage they started from . It was a failure drill using just one target with two shots to the body, one to the head, reload, two to the body and one to the head. It was just to let everyone warm up and get their "first stage jitters" out of the way . Although the results from this stage was counted on final score. It usually takes me two full stages to get in the game and I really like this "warm-up" stage idea .

  14. Make sure that the 2011 mags are at 1.370" or under front to back (per Dave Dawson 2011 Mag Tuning video) . I use a padded vise to squeeze the mag body to just slightly under 1.370" to allow for springback. In the mag tuning video Dave Dawson just wraps the mag body with a rag and uses a plain 'ole workbench vise . They are usually out of spec near the top or bottom . I have seen newly purchased mags being as much as 10 thousands oversize from front to back.

  15. I was hesitant to try a Wilson Extended slide release on my STI Eagle 9mm since the slide stop/release was only offered in 45 but haven't had any problems since installing it . I had to turn down the slide release pin a couple thousands and alter the 2011 grip to make the lever fit but that was all I did . I've only run about 1500 rounds through it since installing the Wilson Ext. Slide Release but haven't had any failures to go to slide lock or premature slide lock problems . The 2011 platform might be different enough from the 1911 to allow the use of a 45 slide stop in a 9mm but it might be worth trying in a 1911 .

  16. Thanks for posting the load and chrono data on Prima V and SV . I have not tried Prima SV but Prima V is now my go-to powder for 9mm minor . I'm getting very similar chrono results with same weight bullets . My Prima V 147 gr. loads feel softer than n-320 loads and I like the recoil impulse better than Clays or Clay Dot loads.

  17. I have installed the Extreem reduced grip on both my STI Eagles (a 9mm and a 40) and like them very much . Before I found this grip I had done some grip reduction on the stock grips but for no more than the Extreem grip costs over stock grips it wasn't worth the effort as the Extreem grip is much nicer and doesn't look like some yahoo with a Dremel tool had been turned loose on it like my original grip. My 9mm grip wears the one that is Black with silver highlights or streaks near the top of the grips and I get a lot of compliments on it's looks . The Blk/Silver grip draws way too much attention to my shooting when I;m not shooting that well . Or least It seems that way.

  18. For my Trojan 9mm I ran Dawson 10 rd. mags for a couple of years but would get a nosedive jam after a reload from slidelock at the worst times . It would run flawlessly for two or three stages then I'd get a nosedive. I ended up keeping the Trojan at home and started shooting my Eagle . I preferred shooting the Trojan and when Chip McCormick announced there new XP 9mm 10 rd magazine I bought three of the XP mags to try and haven't had the first jam or failure to go to slidelock since switching to them . So, my vote would be for the CM XP magazines.

Well I started bragging about my CM XP mags too soon.....had a nosedive jam during a match Saturday that cost me . The spring was still pretty stiff in the mag that I was using when I had the nosedive so after the match I loaded 10 rounds in that mag and am going to leave it loaded for awhile.

  20. I am really liking Nobel Prima V as a replacement for N-320 in 9mm . Basically I started out using a Titegroup starting load and worked up . I currently am loading 3.4 grs with a Bayou 135 gr. LRN 1.13 OAL and 3.8 grs with a Bayou 124 gr. LRN 1.14" OAL and have been able to exceed minor power factor in my 4" and 5" 1911's . Light recoiling and very clean . Only drawback I've found is that the powder has to really settle in your powder dispenser before you start loading .
