Can you safely complete the course of fire?

Questionable.  On at least 2 stages I had to reach around the wall and shoot at the target holding the rifle with one hand.  Some of the guys had lasers on their PCCs for just such an occasion.  I didn't.  :(

  2. Most 3 Gun matches are over 2 and sometimes 3 days.  If I wanted to test my endurance, I'd go run a marathon.  I want to test my shooting skills.

The 1/2 day format also lends itself to being able to run side matches which is great fun and allows more revenue generation for the club.  USPSA is going to being doing more with shotgun and rifle.  Shotgun side match anyone?  That would be big fun.

It will be better! We already have some stage ideas after watching the smaller bays being ran.

Also have a photographer lined up for next year as well. That is something we could not lock down this year.

Also have much more time to lock in sponsors. So, as good as sponsorship was I hope to get a few more prominent players involved next year.

Would you possibly consider a two-day format?  12 stages in one day was a bit much.

Greetings all, I'm very new to USPSA and am at the point where I know just enough to understand theres much, much more I don't know.

I just started getting my feet wet at the end of December with some local club matches originally to expand my skills beyond punching paper at the static range.  After 6 or 8 trips and learning something new each time about my limitations, its bit hard and I'm interested in taking this seriously.  I'm at the point where I sent off for an associate membership for this year, and we will see where this take me.

Glad to be here, I have alot to learn!

    Hi Jeremiah,

SW Ohio also has a strong 3-Gun community - there's usually 2-3 matches happening every month between the Monthly match at Clinton County and the matches that are run at Miami Valley Shooting Grounds.  Hit me up if you'd like more information.

    Best,

    John

  5. So last year I bought the Benelli M2 3-Gun Edition to see if I liked the M2...which I did.  This year I went "Big Willy" and ordered an M2 from Benelli and had it sent to Taran Tactical Innovations for their 3-Gun Package.  I took a few studio shots of it this morning.  Very impressive shotgun:

Ok, between a KL-12 and a Tooth and Nail package, which one and why?  The KL-12 is substantially more but is it really that much better, if at all?

Hi Hitman - I have no direct experience with the Dissident Arms VEPR based shotguns.  I have however fired the T&N MKA 1919 and am purchasing one, along with the billet aluminum lower and the forend which will allow for the left side charging handle, a new trigger and grip, and 3 magazines (28, 23, and 10 round).  I'll be all in for just under 2k - $1500.00 less than the DA package.

The big advantage I see is that the MKA 1919 is very AR-15 like, whereas I believe both the Saiga (which I've owned) and the VEPR (which I haven't) are AK-like in operation.  I MUCH prefer an AR-15 manual of arms.

I'm purchasing the gun from a buddy who has an extra with low round count, and the extra components from T&N.  He's a gun smith himself, and has done a LOT of research on open shotguns.  He's talked to the the T&N guys a lot at matches and is convinced that they're the best open shotgun out there.  If the DA guns ran better, he'd pay the extra money.  But that's not the case.

I have see one Elfmann hammer so far that broke at in an MPX at the 3 Gun Nation Regionals.

Yep...that was a fellow Ohio shooter whom I well know.  Same thing happened to me with my Elf 3-Gun.  The skeletonized hammer seems to be the culprit.  I had it replaced with their match trigger which is the same as their 3-Gun model, but has a solid hammer.  Elfman indicated they've seen several of the 3 Gun models have broken hammers due to a heat treat issue.  There were very easy to work with on the replacement.

I went svelte and just got a scabbard for mine.  Molle straps easily to my range baby buggy and is basically like a big holster for a rifle but gives good padded protection.   For mag pouches I'm using Safariland 771s and a 773 for the Caspian widebody  (for the old style caspian mags which are dimensioned a little different than the new style), and they fit the Colt SMG mags perfect.

I'd love to see a photo of this set up.

  9. Ps I am a an NRA instructor. I do not get that discount .  is there a code I need to use ?

No. Benelli doesn't have a formal program for NRA instructors like many other companies do. But if you call them they will extend you the same discount that they do there "Friends of the industry."

RolexJohn where did you find a performance shop model for $1500?? I've been starting to plan for a new shotgun as I'm getting into 3 gun and have been considering the M3K as after MOA gets done I would be in it for just about $1100, versus $2900 for an M2 from TTI. I would rather put the extra money towards ammo and possibly a reloader next year.

    NRA Instructor discount.  :)

  11. Advice needed from MD's using Practiscore. We've had an insane amount of problems trying to get our matches set up, run, and uploaded to Practiscore - much stress. A big part of the problem is hardware related. Can anyone recommend tablets which work well?

    1. Must have BRIGHT displays
    2. Must have battery life to make it through a match.
    3. Must not be temperature sensitive - we run matches in Ohio year round.
    4. Must be proven to not have any compatibility issues with Practiscore.

    Let's see the recommendations!
  12. I shot my 2nd USPSA match this weekend, and it really shined a spotlight on what I feel is my biggest weakness - movement.

We shot 8 stages - the last 5 of which were classifer stages.  I did reasonably well in 4 of the 5 classifiers.  I placed 1st,2nd,3rd, and 4th in 4 of the 5.  But I lost the most time during the first 3 non-classifer stages (where you have a lot more time available to lose).  I finished  27.16 seconds behind the 2nd place holder and 41.85 seconds behind 1st place holder - I came in 4th place.

I had the second highest A zone score in the match, and had zero misses.  That, combined with my classifier performance seems to suggest that gun handling and marksmanship isn't my biggest problem.

Again, most of my lost time came from the first three stages – 32, 23,and 39 seconds respectively.  I placed 6th, 6th, and 10th on these stages.  My total time for these three stages was 94 seconds.  Comparing the same stages to the 2nd and 1st place holders:

    2nd Place – 23, 17, and 28 with a total time of 68 seconds.  I gave up 26 seconds to the 2nd place holder.

1st Place – 18, 15, 24, with a total time of 57 seconds.  I gave up 37 seconds to the first place holder.

I ran these 3 stages pretty much the same as everyone else - USPSA stages seem much more straight forward than 3 Gun stages from a stage planning perspective.  I think I'm just moving too slowly from point to point - the classifier data seems to suggest that I'm pulling the trigger fast enough, reloading fast enough, etc.

Any suggestions on drills I can do to improve my point to point movement?  Even a 5-10 second improvement on each of these stages would have pushed me up a place or two I believe.

  13. Greetings,

I shot my 2nd USPSA match this weekend, and placed 4th.  I'm trying to analyze the Practiscore data to see where I can improve my performance.  What I don't know is the formula for combining your hits, time, etc. into your final score.  Can someone help me understand how the scores are calculated?
