To OP: 115 vs 124 is something you will have to sort out yourself with a timer. Pay attention to the results and not just the "feel". 115s feel flatter in my gun, but I find it a bit easier to shoot 124s (more predictable dot movement) and don't really give up any speed on the timer.

Also, Open guns have a ton of variation (in barrel length, barrel speed, port configuration) so you may get a completely different result than somebody else. In this thread we've got someone saying a load blows primers, and somebody saying that same load isn't even pushing it in terms of pressure- both are likely right about the guns they are shooting. Neither of them posted OAL which can make a massive difference in pressure. I remember somewhere in the Speer reloading manual it mentions that with a certain load they found a few hundredths of OAL made an astronomical difference in pressure and safety.

Somebody posted a 115 gr load with HS6 saying it is well below the case mouth, but my 115 gr HS6 load takes a full grain more powder than the load they posted and is precariously close to the top. I'd imagine those of us with spicier setups get less brass life, too, but I buy 1x fired and leave it so I don't really know. As far as 115s having more gas to work the comp, for a given powder more powder makes more gas, but my 124 load takes more HS6 than a couple of the 115 gr loads people posted in this thread.

Just wanted to point out that Open probably has the most variation out of all of the divisions as far as guns and loads go, so you have to process the answers and replies you are receiving with that context.

Hear hear!!!  I fully agree with Mike's statements.  No two guns are exactly the same and so pressures and loads will have to be adjusted based on the gun.  I read a thread on here from a guy who actually has a load he likes and then builds his gun to fit the load.  Chicken egg, egg chicken...it all comes down to trial and error until you find what feels and performs right for you.  The opinions on here are generally great starting points of reference not facts for everyone!

  2. Grand Junction is an American Airlines hub.  The airport is fantastic as you don't pay for parking and you can be in and through security in a matter of minutes.  There are quality hotels within a couple minutes and it is all close to I-70 which takes you strait to the range  about 15 minutes east of the airport.  If they have direct flights to my destination it is my first choice of airports that I am near.

For a person starting at 0, I recommend a Glock, XDM, or M&P in 40 Smith & Wesson. Then you can shoot production, Limited, limited 10, and even carry Ops fairly competitively. You're going to want to reload though that way in the divisions that major is not an advantage you can load minor. If someone would have gave me that advice it would have saved me a lot of money a long time ago 🙂

Fully agree with RJH.  Stick with an entry level polymer to learn with so as not to break the bank.  After a few months and getting used to the rules and styles of guns other shooters have; then make a decision if you want to venture into something that requires a larger investment.  Good luck and have fun!

Pretty much everyone holds it differently. I find crushing it with the weak hand and holding the strong hand light enough to not effect the trigger work well.

I think it's also a good idea to run something like a bill drill or doubles and see where the shots end up. If you're right handed and the shots are left, ease up on your strong hand. If they're going right then grip harder with the strong hand, etc. I kind of picture it like steering a boat.

Take this with a grain of salt, however, as I may be very dumb but it works for me.

Not dumb Iroy!!!  You are right we each hold a little differently.  Most important is experimenting with a ton of repetition until you find what fits your style best.  Of course there are the fundamentals but practice, practice, and more practice will prove what works for you and maybe not someone else.  Like you said take it with a grain of salt but I think you are correct in your statements.

Since i am cz guy,  about 6 months ago i bought a cz czechmate and was thinking of getting a 2nd one as a back up.  2 weeks ago i came across a used 2011 custom, it was such a great deal that i couldn't walk away from. Doing dryfire i find myself liking the 2011 better. guess I'll be selling my czechmate and get another 2011.

I did the same thing back in the day.  Once I went 2011 everything else was subpar.

There is only a $4 difference per 2000 between PD 115 FMJ and JHP, and only $2 difference between their 124 FMJ and the JHP.  I'd gladly pay a larger Delta not to have to clean my comp.  Geez!  8000 JHPs through my new Open gun so far this year and I can still see the machining marks in the bottoms of the comp chambers.

PD?  Not familiar with those.  I use RMR cause they are the best price I’ve found.

If your issue is just with the base of the cartridge then use this combo and it will resize only the bases and not swage the bullet.

I followed your link but Lee state that you can't use these on a 9mm.  I imagine that's due to the 9mm not being a straight walled cartridge.

well i must be the oddball as when i loaded 9mm major for my open gun i ran everything .  Did not sort it then or now.    Never had a case split in half. i must have loaded at least 25k 9mm major before my gun broke and i stopped loading major.

I agree Sandbagger.  I have loaded and reloaded my major brass an still haven't had an issue.  I am around the same round count as you too.  I always find the guys picking up brass handing me back my marked brass cause they are afraid to run it in their limited guns after it came out of an open gun.  Fine by me that's less brass I have to pick up myself.

  9. I think with all the current builders out there the shooting world is better off anyway.  I watched most the guys that purchased a new STI (specifically the DVC) had to go clear through it and fix all the things STI should have done from the beginning.  With companies like CK, Atlas, Limcat, ect... offering quality guns with most of the bugs already fixed and better customer service people should have nothing to fear.  Kind of an end of an era though.

Catching the ejected round definitely seems to be more of a USPSA thing.  I have never done a "FlipN'Catch" in an IDPA match without the SO losing his mind.  "Pump the brakes there, buckaroo!  I don't know how they unload and show clear where you come from, but 'round these parts decent folk EJECT THAT ROUND ONTO THE GROUND!!!"  Maybe IDPA SOs see the "FlipN'Catch" as a sign of loose living and moral degradation and they are trying to steer us all back onto the straight and narrow.

Careful, I was just chastised for making fun of IDPA and their geriatric way of shooting yesterday.  I thought the guy might be from the snowflake generation as sensitive as he was but I was wrong, he was just old and grumpy.

Can't pull off a solid "FlipN'Catch" with a Glock, though.  The round just kind of dribbles out of the chamber.  That may have been 3% of the reason why I started shooting CZs.  Those bad boys lob ejected rounds into the lower stratosphere.

I want to know what the other 97% was about?  Does it have something to do with a CZ just feels like a real gun?!?

I practiced the flip and catch before I even shot my first match because I knew that no woman would ever have me if I ejected the chambered round onto the ground.  Since perfecting the "FlipN'Catch" (registered trademark), my bald spot has filled in, my sexual endurance is endless, I can parallel park on the first try everytime, and my accountant now asks me for advice on his taxes.  "FlipN'Catch"... Unload and show clear with CLASS.

    LMAO!!!🤣
