  1. I tried the FSS in my .40 and was never happy with it. If I used the recommended springs the pull was too stiff and if I used the comp springs I had dead trigger issues. Plus I never liked the feel of the FSS trigger. Ended up taking it out and going with the CAEK. My .40 had the thumb safety so no ram.

+1 on using CAEK. I also tried FSS but took it out for the same reasons.

  2. It comes down to personal preference mostly. The full length dust cover ads weight which softens felt recoil. However the added weight slows transition from target to target a little. Heavier being harder to start and stop moving.

As for ramped barrels I would always go with ramped. They fully support the case which is especially important with higher pressure loads.

I used to shoot USPSA open class and liked my .38 super compgun as light and quick handleing as possible. Now I am older and shooting Limited class with a .40 cal STI Edge with a full dust cover and a tungsten full length guiderod and I love it.

What ever you choose you will not be disappointed with STI. They build a great gun. And the best thing about the 2011/1911 guns is the availability of great optional parts so you can tune/fit it exactly to your likeing.

  3. I got a chance to try the Bear Creek 180gr SWC today. Shooting my 5"STI Edge.

First they worked flawlessly loaded to 1.180" The crimp being well above the grease groove. I mostly was just trying to work up a load so I started with the same load I have been useing with the 180gr MG JHP. Which is 4.9 VV N320 at 1.200" giving me avg vel. of 936.7 or 168.6 p/f

The BC 180 SWC at 1.180" with 4.9 N320 went an avg 1008 at 181.45 p/f. Wow, these are way faster than MG.

I weighed a few and they are a little heavier than advertised coming in between 182.5 and 186.0gr most at about 183 quite a lot of varience. The MG's weighed 180 +/- .1gr

So if you use a weight of 183 the p/f went to 184.4

Long story short, after reducing the load a couple times I ended up with 4.3gr N320 at 1.180" giving an avg vel of 930.82 or 167.5 p/f.

Again if you use the actual avg weight of 183 the p/f is 170

I didn't get a chance to really test accuracy but I did back up about 20yds and fired a few shots freestyle at a target. They were all right there so I don't expect accuracy issues to be a problem.

I went home and cleaned my gun. After about 100rds it was dirtier than with JHP's but I expected this. There was moly residue and a small amount of leading in the barrel. Not having shot moly bullets before I don't know what is normal. The moly stuff cleaned out easily but the lead is lead and took a little more effort. Is it normal to have some lead fouling?

Overall I like these. They feed well, are easy to load and seem to be accurate. Best of all the price is good.

  4. Steve, I recieved my 180SWC last night. I am shooting a STI Edge and it looks like loading them to 1.180" - 1.190" col puts the crimp well above the grease groove. I loaded some dummies and they feed great by hand. Will be putting some powder behind some and testing them today. Will keep you posted.

  5. You should be concerned. That looks like a failure to feed waiting to happen. I think you are on the right track. Most times this happens when the follower isn't applying enough pressure to keep the rounds secure in the tube. Make sure the inside of the mag tube is clean and free of dings or burrs. Scotchbrite or fine sandpaper work well. Also check the followers for burrs. New springs and clean shiny ammo. I load mine to the same 1.200" without any issues.

  6. I am wondering why nobody offers a .40 cal semi-wadcutter in a plated or polymer coated bullet. I always liked the clean holes they put in targets. It seems they would be a popular choice for USPSA or IPSC competition. A nice 180gr. SWC would be great. Is there some reason they don't offer these?

  7. I'm cross-dominant (left-eyed, but shoot pistols right-handed). I just line up the sights in front of my left eye...I may also tilt my head slightly, but not much.

+1 same here. I recently got contacts set up to see front sight with left eye and distance with right eye. Then you can wear normal shooting glasses. Sounds wierd but it works.

  8. The problem with that theory is that a reliable, reloadable 21 round mag is not a big problem. I have 5 of them -- all nothing special. Factory SV tubes that are un tuned, bolens springs and followers and SNL pads. Few strokes of the file and they're 100% legal. There are plenty of stages where having a few extra shots is good insurance and skipping a mag change on a 22 round stage is a fantastic luxury that can pay in spades.

Would you or someone else please post a picture of a magazine with the feed leps filed to fit the gauge. I have 3 new style SVI .40 cal mags that fit the gauge with the Dawson +1 pads but not with the SNL pads. It looks like I would need to remove so much material from the rear of the lips that they would separate from the rear of the body. Would that be acceptable? BTW the 2 STI 140mm mags fit with the SNL pads with only minor sanding of the lips. thx

  9. I too had a similar experience with my M&P 9mm PRO. After a LOT of experimentation, a different barrel and trying many load combinations I finally got one load that was acceptable. Then I decided to try shooting my M&P .40 in limited major so I loaded up some 180gr Berrys FP with 5.1 N320 at 1.170".Chronoed great! 169p/f but Accuracy was horrible. Maybe a 10-12"group (if you can call that a group) at 25 yrds.4-5" at 15yrds. Not wanting to go through all the time and effort I went through sorting out the 9mm I decided to cut through all the bullshit and solve the problem quickly.

My STI Edge .40 arrives today. M&P's suck.

  10. Thanks for the info.

Got to chrono some rounds today. Tried a couple different loads.

These were all out of my M&P FS 4.25" .40 useing Berry's 180gr FP, Federal once fired brass and Fed GM100M primers at 1.170" COL.

    4.7gr N320, 887fps. 159 p/f

    5.0gr N320, 924fps. 166 p/f

    5.3gr N320, 973fps. 175 p/f

Think I am going to settle in at about 5.1gr. should be about 168-169 p/f.

The gun ran great at this COL and there were no signs of over pressure.

Looking forward to shooting some matches to try it out.

  11. Hello, I am returning to USPSA after quite some time. I am looking to start out in limited shooting a M&P full size .40S&W.4.25"bbl. I have been reading here about different loads and would like to try loading some 180gr Berry's FP with VV N320. My mags will only tolerate a max col of 1.170" and function well cycling the slide by hand. The barrel will take that bullet out to 1.280" before the bullet sticks to the rifleing.

I am looking for recommended major load for N320 and maybe WST. And are you guys useing small pistol primers or small rifle? Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thx, Cavy
