Looks for Range

Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. I agree with the census that it may be attributed to stressed brass or a double charge. I will inspect more carefully in the future and pay more attention during the reloading process. I immediately thought it was the brass, but maybe it was me. I want to thank you all for the input that helped me. I hope this reloading SNAFU does not happen to any of you fine people. Thanks Sig Lady for posting!!! May your POA be your POI!!! John
  2. I use the 550 Dillon press and have to manually index and after thousands of rounds reloading, I have (knock on wood) never double charged a cartridge. Maybe I missed a small crack during cleaning and inspection. I'm not sure, however it tested my pucker factor and I'm good. Thanks for the replies.
  3. I experienced a scary moment today on the range and was wondering if anyone else had a similar incident. I had a reloaded cartridge split the brass at the base and it threw debris up through the ejection port into my face. I wasn't injured except for a couple abrasions to my nose and cheek. It scared the crap out of me and twisted the follower of my magazine. The brass ejected was an S&B that was previously fired, it ruptured along the base and cracked almost the entire circumference. Load: .45 ACP 3.8 Gr. Clays 230 Gr. RN Ranier OAL 1.26 WLP primer Has anyone else had this happened? I attribute it to a fatigued casing, but I have never had this happen before. Any input would be well appreciated. Thanks. John
  4. I just changed reloads for my Kimber Eclipse Target II for a lighter load with: 230 Gr. Plated round nose. 3.9 Gr. Clays. I haven't fired for velocity yet, but this seems to be a pet load for 5" 45 ACP for some experienced shooters. Sorry, there is a question here. I changed out to a 14 lb. recoil spring and the round is very soft, however a little sluggish. Should I change to a lighter recoil spring? Thanks. John
  5. Coldchar, I have a bunch of CMC 10 round magazines and seems crazy to buy a bunch of 8 round mags just to change divisions with the same handgun with the original John Browning 1911. I just want to compete within the rules. John
  6. Clays seems to be a very popular choice. I use it for a 230 gr. FMJ through my Kimber with a 14# spring and it is outstanding for "soft and clean". However, it will depend how you well you control recoil. Some like a snappy recoil, others like a softer and slower recoil. There is boundless info in the 45 ACP reloading area. Welcome and good luck. John
  7. Thanks Chuck. If it fits in the box with WITH empty magazine. I'm seeing it now. John
  8. I hope I don't get flamed for a lame question. I looked at the the rules for magazine restrictions for SS limiting loads to 8 rounds, but can you have a 10 round magazine and load only 8 rounds. I haven't played since 2005 and single stack didn't exist then. I shot in L-10 and have a bunch of 10 round mags and wondering if I have to restock on 8 rounders to compete in SS. Thanks. John
  9. Hey Glocksters!! Just purchased a G-35 and curious since this is the first polymer framed gun I've owned. Is their certain cleaning solvents I should avoid that would damage the polymer? Do you recommend one? John
  10. +1 Peltor tactical 6S for $65ish. Great electronic ear muffs at a decent price.
  11. Thanks for the input. I was at the range tonight and focused or attempted to focus on the front sights completely, at 10 feet, 20 feet and 30 feet. Groups were so much better; with attention to the front sight (blurry target). I hope I will be able to focus at speed (i.e. during a stage). Thanks again for the info. John
  12. Happy Birthday Brian!! Thank you for the great site. John
  13. For those who care, Cabela's has Remington 2.5 large pistol primers in stock. I just ordered 5000 and they sent a confirmation that it would deliver by 4/20.
  14. Hey Flex, Thanks for revisiting this topic!! Note:I broke this question out of another thread... - Admin. I have a question for the experienced handgun gurus. I am having difficulty adjusting to "front sight" focus, this leaves the target blurry and I realize the eye can't accommodate both within focus; however this seems counter-intuitive and find myself re-focusing on the target. I am working on this and curious if this is common or am I just a newbie being a newbie. John
  15. New guy chiming in. Why such a shortage in primers? If people are hoarding them, why? This sucks. Having all the components to reload except primers with spring breaking and not being able to reload. UGH!!! I am venting in the worst way. John
