People often do things because that's they way they've always done them or because it's the way others have. Sometimes the reasons are good, sometimes they were good but no longer are, and sometimes there's no good reason.
That's how I first got this lb of Red Dot. The guy that taught me to reload gave it to me and told me he used it for all of his light pistol loads, then it turns out it's near impossible to find data for 9mm and .40 with it.

I am working up a load for USPSA production class with a 180gr plated bullet. The load data I've found for this is 4.5-5.0gr with a 180gr bullet. I'm currently working up from 3.4gr-4.6gr in to try and find a load that works. I selected the powder because it's what I have and my only other option is unique until I can go buy some new powder. But my question is, why does nobody use Red Dot, when it sits between the burn rate of titegroup and solo 1000, which I've seen several people here talk about? Anyways, I was just going to finish off this half pound of Red Dot then switch to either Clays or N320 if I can find it, but figured I would see why more people aren't using Red Dot.

Looks like there are some blems in. Looks like I'll pick up the R&R and Seeklanders book to start with. Thanks for the input guys.

I've been looking around and there seems to be a ton of books out there for getting into the sport. I'm definitely going to buy Brian's book, because it seems to be recommended all over the place. It also seems like Seeklander's book is pretty popular so I may get that eventually, but there's a bunch of books here that seem interesting. Mostly I'm wondering if anyone owns Perfect Practice and Refinement and repetition, and which they like better, and why.
If I could I'd buy them all, but I can only afford to snag two for now.

Run a 135gr or 155gr JHP or plated with a medium burn powder light autocomp or power pistol, seems to be the standard in a comp gun

Why 40? This is really going to limit your magazine capacity. Isn't that what open is all about?
If you are asking me, then mag capacity is a non-issue. CA has a 10 round restriction in place.

Hey guys, I'm new here at the BE forums, but a long time reader around here. I was seriously considering building a gun for 9mm Major, but then started to think about what it offers over .40s&w, and it seems that ammo/brass price, and mag capacity are the big advantages to Major 9. Well I live in CA, and I don't own high-caps, so that's a non-issue. And, I work at a range. I don't trust range brass for Major 9 loads, and making major in .40 isn't pushing the limits the way it is with 9. So, free brass, and a mag capacity more limited by my state than my caliber has led me to .40 major. Since I just plan on getting a feel for things, I'm going to build it off a Glock 22. I don't have a load because I don't have the gun set up, but I'm going to pick up either Nosler or Rainier 135 and 155gr bullets, and test them with Longshot and Autocomp, maybe Power Pistol, just to see what feels best. Hopefully I'll be posting back here soon with some more info when I get the gun built.

Provided they used a reasonable barrel length, looks like major is even within safe loads, and my minor load is way under starting. In fact, the highest I worked up to is listed as the start load. And I only need about 730fps-750fps
