1. I just wish they had just made it a 10 round limit and gave us back the mag release for all firearms. Then 10 Rd mag changes would be okay, and while not the best, the rifles would be normal and no stupid button.

While this has not been completely determined yet it appears that registered AWs will be able to retain their naughty features and ditch the magazine lock. If there is any silver lining to be found in this mountain of restrictions, that would be it. Well that, and getting really good at changing mags. Aussies seemed to do pretty well at WS despite shooting down under with 10 round mags.

Once we see the registration form I will figure out if my stable will get registered or be configured featureless. My PCC is set up featureless but being able to wrap my thumb around the grip would be much better.

Despite primarily being a pistol (and now PCC) only competitor this is going to impact all of us. Only the guys who shoot low cap divisions by choice are making it out of this round "unscathed".

I am having an Open gun built right now. Looks like I will be going "bullets out" or having to gain some weight for more belt real estate...

While the ultimate goal of Sacramento is likely elimination of AWs there is a provision to "de-register" guns after they become featureless, so that may be an option in the future as well, unless they get a featureless ban through as well.

  2. I'm pre-diabetic, and have been using Powerade Zero sports drink.

I'm not sure, but I think it's Gatorade with sucralose instead of sugar -

    made by Coca Cola.

I read a year or so ago to dilute it 1:1 with water, and that seems to

be doing a nice job, so far. :)

I have been trying to reduce the mass transitioning from shooting position to shooting position. So far Powerade Zero has been helping me keep calories down and stay hydrated when I have the foresight to bring it to the range. It is also delicious.

It definitely beats the old plan of a rockstar energy drink and a few coke zeros throughout the day in terms of hydration.

  3. My K100 just won't digest it! Anything steel cased it won't extract round after round. I have to manually work the slide to clear the chamber. Sometimes it even locks solid where the barrel won't rotate to allow the slide to go back. This even happens with Freedom's new brass coated steel 9mm rounds.

I have a K100. It has functioned perfectly with steel cased ammo, brass, aluminum, etc, but I understand that doesn't help you. I didn't have to do anything to "get it to run" besides load the magazines.

Yesterday I shot it with a fairly stout charge of HS6, and some sub minor steel challenge type loads. So far it seems to like everything.

What does brass look like coming out? Have you taken a look at the chamber?

  4. I have had no problems at all with 115s at 1625fps. In matches, I am shooting 124s at about 1150.

I am not saying it can't be done, not by a long shot. Just that loads should be worked up, and to take into account the relative masses, spring weights, barrel lengths and powders used.

My comment on this thread was just to caution people that just throwing your Open load into a blowback gun might not be the best idea.

  5. I would say that if you can run it in a pistol, you can run it in a 9mm AR, "major" loads that is. You may need to go with a slightly heavier buffer and/or spring to deal with increased bolt velocity in the blowback guns, but that is certainly do-able.

Just a word of caution with this- most 9mm ARs do not have a locked breach. Most "9mm Major" pistol loads use very slow burning powders. This can (and has) resulted in case head separations. I would work up a load carefully, and not just assume a PCC will handle it because an Open gun will.
I built some hot loads for my PCC with Bullseye powder and a 125gr bullet. They go over the chrono right at 200PF. I have had 2 case head seperations. I have now gone through the 200 or so I have left and pulled all the ones with the crimp ring on the brass.

The faster the powder likely the more you can get away with. My friend had separations around 180 pf with his typical Open HS6 load. Slow powders with long barrels in a straight blowback gun is asking for trouble.

200 with a 125 would put you right at the 1600 fps limit.

  7. Quarter Circle 10 sells a 14.5" barrel threaded 1/2-28. MicroMOA does as well, but they are out of stock, eta is about 2 months. JP sells a 14.5 stainless barrel threaded 1/2-36.

All of those would be viable options for a pin and weld. I have been trying to come up with some combination of buying a barrel, getting it chopped and threaded, and installing a muzzle device and all of the options are projected to be more costly or less desirable than just buying the barrel length I want to start.

You could try reaching out to Randall Rausch of AR15barrels.com and see if he would be willing to do the work on a nitrided barrel- he does good work.

  8. Gamer AK is nearly complete:

    IMG_8613.jpg

The permanently attached AMD65 comp is around 4 oz and the combo comes in just over 17". I am going to replace it with a pinned/welded JTAC which will save 2 oz and bring it to just over 16".

Also going to swap out the pistol grip for a Magpul piece.

ALG trigger is amazing for $49. I reprofiled the hammer and polished up the engagement surfaces- it passes all of the safety tests, functions properly, and is averaging around 1 lb 9 oz at the middle of the bow. It has more travel/reset distance than I would prefer, but it feels a lot like a smooth, light Glock trigger.

I ended up welding and grinding the recoil guide a bit to get the tail of the bolt carrier traveling as it should and keep the carrier from jumping the rails.

I had a Randall of AR15barrels.com do the riveting and press the barrel and barrel pin in. The gun runs great! I have thought about trying to cut down the amount of gas hitting the piston, but I might try a fresh recoil spring first. Now I just need to swap the comp and grip, get it zeroed and start getting ready for Red Oktober.

  9. The learning curve is steep for pistol shooters with no long-gun experience. We are seeing a lot of very experienced handgunners crawling clumsily through stages with their PCC that they would burn down with their pistol. I am sure this will just be temporary... once they get the hang of it, they should see a marked improvement.

    I agree.

    I second this.

As a somewhat experienced pistol shooter I can verify this. I have tried working with the carbine in dry fire (local match hasn't allowed PCC yet) and I feel like I am in C class again.

I look forward to learning to shoot a long gun in a short space.

  10. I picked up a Romeo3 on the QD riser mount for PCC. I really like the size and intensity of the dot. I like it enough that I will probably use one on my open gun with the Double Tap mount if it will clear the blast shield.

I heard that there may be a 6 and an 8 MOA version in the prototype stage but no word on if or when they would be released.

  11. That could be a disadvantage for choosing that platform for 32 round stages with steel. I was thinking about getting a Colt mag AR since I've been having nothing but problems with my Glock mag AR, but don't like the idea of being limited to a max of 32 round mags.

For USPSA, I wouldn't feel under-gunned with 32-round mags. For a stage that long, there should be a number of opportune places to make a single reload.

But it wouldn't be necessary. Looking at just Uzi mags, I've got capacities of 25, 32, 40, 60 (Frankenmag), and 100 Beta Drum.

At one match (non-USPSA), I ran 2 Betas and a 60 in a single stage.

Interesting, I know nothing about Colt SMG mag ARs. The Uzi mags are exactly the same as SMG mags except you need to cut a new mag catch notch? Is there anyone selling the 40 round mags already modified for an AR?

Affirmative to the notch. They will lack the BHO feature which I am perfectly good with.

I haven't seen any 40s for sale already modified but M60Joe does them relatively cheap unless he doesn't like where you live. Uzi 32s run around 12 bucks... and (will confirm tomorrow) with just a bit of filing they will take readily available extensions for 35.

Anybody with a mill can cut the notch pretty easily, or if you have a dremel it isn't rocket surgery.

The MPX vs JP thing already has a thread. While it is an interesting debate I think the match results should do the talking. Pick one and practice...

I shot an MPX and it was nice. I liked it. I didn't feel like it was worth 2 Colt pattern ARs but that is just one man's opinion.

  12. For Colt mag 9mm ARs are there any good quality mags available that hold more than 32 rounds or can mag extensions be added to the Metalform or other SMG mags?

I used to have a Colt and an RRA that used UZI and Colt mags. I believe 32 is the most and no extensions.

    Pat

They aren't currently sold new but there are 40 round mags out there, and any capacity available for an Uzi is just a mag catch notch away from fitting a 9mm AR. There are welded big sticks available too for much higher capacity.

Also, while to my knowledge nobody makes extensions for the Metalform or Uzi mags that doesn't mean there aren't any extensions that will fit. I am working on something for my Uzi mags at the moment but it looks like a bit of filing of the tube will be required so I don't want to go making claims just yet.

I do have a setup that holds 35 but given the length it should hold more, and I wouldn't want to drop it due to how the extension is interfacing.

I think PCC is exciting in part because gamers are experimenting with the gear and that drives development to an extent.

  13. Well, if the face of the receiver is off (as many are) that can typically be corrected.

There are tools that face the receiver flat relative to the bore the bolt carrier rides or it can be done in a lathe.

If the receiver face where the barrel extension seats is not perpendicular to the bore of the bolt carrier group the bolt can favor particular lugs in lock up, which is not ideal.

I had an AR that was way out and still grouped well, but I tore it down, faced the receiver, and reassembled. Shoots the same but I expect to get a lot more life out of the bolt than I would have otherwise.

  14. I have an AR project I am working on with a special requirement. I was hoping to use a KMR Alpha rail but the barrel nut is too long (as measured from the flange it seats against on the barrel towards the muzzle). A standard AR barrel nut will work, but it seems like all the handguards that fit to the standard nut have a large OD (Troy, Samson Evo, Rainier, etc). Most of the carbon fiber or generic aluminum cylindrical handguard nuts have holes for the gas tube to pass through around the circumference of the nut- which will not work on my project.

It looks like the MI G2 nut might be short enough, and those would fit my OD preference- is there anything else I am missing?

I am going to put the gun together with a standard nut and go test fire with a glove.

  15. Where in CA are you at? Even if you have a top end built by someone out of state you will still need to have the slide and barrel both fit to the frame by a smith.

If the frame you have is not complete you will need to have all the fire control components fit and safeties blended, unless that is something you can do yourself.

If you are just looking to have the machine work for the top end and fitting to frame done, and you are planning on building the rest out you would be looking for a "short block".

Glenn at Lone Star Innovations just built a top end for a friend, and then my friend took the top end and frame to a local smith for fitting. It came out really nice.

  16. I'm surprised no one brought up the MechTec System. I think that would be a cheap way to get into PCC. In California, I think it is our only way.....

You can get almost any PCC in CA. Just needs to be compliant with AW regs.

JP, MPX, other 9mm ARs, CZ Scorpion, etc are all available (provided they are brought in dimensionally compliant as a long gun). Just no SBRs.

  17. <blockquote class='ipsBlockquote'data-author="lawboy" data-cid="2618590" data-time="1465357412">

The comment above that it would "add 9 oz" is correct, give or take a bit. While the new grip weighs 12 oz you are taking off the STI polymer grip- I don't have a spare on hand but IIRC the polymer grip weighs a little less than 3 oz.That would put you somewhere around 50.5, rather than 53.5. Also, if you have silica carbide epoxied on to your STI grip it would weigh a bit more than a bare grip, but I would imagine as long as you are applying a similar amount to the new PT grip it shouldn't change the roughly 9 oz gain.

  18. Looks great! I am planning on the fixed stock (again, CA thing) and the shorter MOE handguard, but the Zhukov parts look great!

I thought long and hard about doing a 74 as I think it would be more pleasant to shoot than a 47, but, I have AR's for that. I have an appointment with my builder, so once I pick the receiver up from jail this is going to get rolling.

Thinking of welding up the gas block and redrilling to cut down on the gas a bit- almost all the AKs I have shot have seemed overgassed.
