Good Luck And Be Safe!!!
-
One of the top shooters who uses a production style pistol (Glock) versus a competition oriented pistol (I.E.:STI). Granted, he does enhance his pistols similar as another person enhances their competition oriented pistol:
So in my opinion, it is more about the person's abilities, likes, and dislikes behind the firearm than the firearm itself. Most of the top shooters would still be great no matter what pistol is in their hand. They just tend to use the tools offered from their sponsors...

Do some dry fire drills with the XDm to get use to not having a thumb safety to switch on/off or a place for your thumb to ride on as on the 1911s. Also depending on how much you shoot SS, you may need to get use to having 2 more rounds in the mag before needing a mag change. Lastly, most stages are designed around Production class so reading/prepping for a stage may be a little different than what you may be use to when participating in SS.
The grip angle is very similar if not equal to a 1911, so you natural point of aim should be the same.

I am really happy to hear you ok and get well soon
What parts exactly were replaced and/or modified in anyway in that pistol?

Is your strong hand thumb flagged/pointing up or is it pointing forward? Just a thought but If it is pointing up, then that might contributing to not adding enough contact/pressure on the grip safety

I'm not so sure. My strong hand thumb points up and does not contact the gun at all really.
Don’t get me wrong here as I am certainly no expert in any shape or form.
But I am wondering if the strong hand thumb up grip could contribute in preventing the shooters palm from applying enough contact/pressure on the grip safety versus the strong hand thumb forward grip. In trying it myself here, it seems that my palm applies more contact/pressure when the thumb is pointing forward.

Be sure to perform a "cold" test before you complete the job. After you install it, you can place it in the freezer for 30 minutes or so and then dry fire to test it. The link below has discussions about how the cold could affect it:

Is It me or is loading the last two rounds in an XDS 5 round mag a real bear. I am not a new shooter and hve shot a carried 1911s for many years. However a 1911 mag is east to load. I struggle with the las two in my XDS. Do they get easier with use?
Padraig
Load them up and let them sit for a few days. This should greatly help with easing to load them after you do this.

I would love to have a spare slide that grants me the option to easily install a small red dot. Like the new M&Ps that have a plate that can be removed to install the optics.

The front site on XD firearm are notorious for being very tight and difficult to remove.
Let Rich do it for you. He will most certainly do it right.

Is there any disadvantage to using a light weight (some call them pencil barrels) profile barrel versus a regular or heavy profile barrel in 3-gun matches?

In searching a little more through these new rules, I found the following:
* 2.1.3
** The minimum cartridge case dimension for handguns to be used in USPSA matches is 9x19 mm. The minimum bullet diameter is 9 mm (.354 inches). The minimum caliber for Rifle is 5.45mm x 39mm. Shotguns must be 20 gauge or larger. Some divisions may have a higher minimum.
The minimum Power Factor in Minor and Major for Handun, Rifle, and Shotgun seem to be documented in the Appendix A area of the new rules. I can't seem to be able to copy them here in a format that is easy to read so please check the link provided in the earlier reply.

The new recently published USPSA 2013 MultiGun rules seem to document that the Minimum caliber/Cartridge on a rifile for some of the divisions (Open, Tactical, and Limited) is now 5.45mm x 39mm. The remaining divisions (Heavy Metal Tactical and Heavy Metal Limited) are now .308 Winchester / 7.62x51 Nato as the rifle Minimum caliber/Cartridge.
At least that is what I understand from the Appendix area of these new rules.
The new rules can be accessed here:

I was thinking maybe 9mm because lower
Recoil/better accuracy.
You will be at a disadvantage because the 9mm is scored as Minor Power Factor versus the 40s&w is scored as Major Power Factor (assuming you make the Power Factor limitations in the rules).

I started in Limited because it allowed me to concentrate on the other aspects of the sport and didn't have to worry about multiple mag changes. Once I got better and was comfortable that I was safe with my firearm on the course, then I tried my luck in the Production Division. Go slow at first and concentrate on your hits. The speed will come naturally to you as you progress.
I actually like Limited a little more than Production due to having to perform less mag changes.

in addition to the three excelent companies you mentioned already, don't forget that the Springfield Armory Custom Shop is also a viable option to perform great trigger jobs:
They offer trigger jobs on the XD/XDm for both competition and carry.

The process is pretty much the same for all pistols. Here are a couple videos that may help:

I purchased both XDm 9mm and XDm 40S&W from the Springfield Armory online shop. When I made my purchase, they had a maximum of 5 mags of each caliber rule. They also stated that they would ship out within a week.
