I am interested to see an approach that makes the long range "more fair". One thing that makes a long range stage much different is that it could take even an experienced shooter 10-15 seconds to hit a 500 yard target being in an awkward shooting position, dealing with mother nature, etc.... Dampening the penalty promotes banging a couple down range and standing up to show clear. I noticed this on the previous botw match when Doug took a couple shots and I spent a little more time, but hit 5 for 5 on the long range. Doug gamed the stage properly in my opinion as there was little reward in hitting the long range 500 yard targets. Another approach would be to increase the penalties on all the other stages. I personally like the risk reward especially on the long range because it favors what I grew up doing. That is the selfish in me.
Josh, my point earlier was that if I corrected stage 2 with me planting one in the forehead of an innocent and another dumb dumb error, it would have moved me to the top in placing. I am sure a dozen others would say the same in hind sight. BTW, I spent 30 minutes showing Griff how to shoot the longer ranges this week and look at his time. He is new to shooting long range and even a scoped rifle as of this year. Long range stages are like being able to load a shotgun in an expedient manner. They will keep you from the top places.
Like all the others I am going to continue attending these matches and shoot with the rules as they are dictated since I am not a MD or on any rules committee. I have not been shooting this sport very long, but it is a lot of fun and I plan on hanging around. My opinion is worth even less than Doug's you get what you pay for. See you all at the next one.
