  1. Not ranting or complaining. Just thinking aloud.

Can't find a Shadow or 01 to feel and do the usual front sight on target deal; didn't want to take the chance of buying a gun sight unseen and regretting it, so I am thinking of getting a 85 Combat and having Stuart work his magic. Surely there is one of those in town. There isn't! And I have an Impact Guns (which had a CZ Custom Target last year at dealer price, but at the time I had no idea what it was) locally but they're out of stock.

Online either has 10rd Combats or satin for a high price. Just plain black, please. All my usual low price online gun shops don't carry CZ.

If I wasn't so hesitant buying without feeling/trying I would just get that $880 3-mag sale sp01 Shadow and send it to Colorado.

  2. I have a boatload of WST and run it with good results in 9mm and 45acp. Even if it ran out I'd be tempted to buy again for convenience. And my barrels are super clean with Bear Creek. One barrel has about 4000 rounds. So clean and accurate.

  3. That'd be helpful. I have a stash of 125g moly and 135 moly. All from Bear Creek. So it's not like I have 95, 115, 124 fmj, 130 lead, 147 and 160, ha.

most of us find one load and stick to it. otherwise, like stuart said, we just get a different front sight or file it. our primary concern is finding one that just shoots and work on our shooting, no real time spent trying all kindas of loads. some avoid adjustable sights because of breakage; angus himself just installs an adjustable, then screws it down all the way to the bottom anyways.

otherwise, we'd be happy to share load info that shots POA to POI with the factory competition sights, is cheap, and shoots clean.

  4. It would seem that all target shooters, especially those who reload, go for the adjustable rear target sight, but I've read a few times that some go for the less expensive low profile competition rear sight.....and they just get a different front sight height or they file the rear down a hair.

But what happens if you change bullet weight or reload recipe?

  5. A year or so ago I PM'd a few helpful and friendly (and patient with me!) CZ forum members.

It's been a while, but the Shadow with short rail and target sights was the 9mm I was wanting. Think this was it; http://czcustom.com/shadowtarget.aspx

1: Some said not to get a trigger that was adjustable? Even if I wanted it the cutting of a few springs was the same (I run only Federal primers).

2: And many suggested Matt Mink. So I emailed him last year and the info was great. Think I wanted a 6# DA and a 3# SA. No problem.

3: Before I forget: the competition hammer was not the necessity, right?

4: In addition to not wanting the firing pin block, my "must be Production legal" also was on a bit of a budget: I asked what were the most cost effective/bang for your buck options. Meaning I did not want to pay for super duper GM pricey options to get a .00001 faster transition. :goof:

Having said all that, it seem the likes of Gunbroker has no deals and then you'd have to pay big bucks for shipping. The part that concerns me for CZ is the near-monopoly. Two main gunsmiths? Unlike Springfield or another company there is umpteenth vying for your money and deals are to be had. Is the pricing for a Shadow with a proven trigger job the same with Mink and Angus?

  6. They're out of black/black but two-tone is still in stock at $559 before shipping or 3% credit card fee: http://www.oakhillenterprises.com/Category/639/Guns/Pistols/Smith-Wesson-Pistols-Autos.htm

Grabagun is out of black/black, too, but 1 two tone at $555 and $5.99 shipping. And no credit card fee. Combined with Botach's $22 mag price that is a darn good deal: http://grabagun.com/s-w-m-p-9mm-5-dt-pro-series-17rd.html

  7. I do not want to start a CZ vs (enter striker fire or 1911 HERE) debate, and I know it's not an apples to apples comparison. I have a few questions and am looking for objective non-fanboy input based purely on trigger.

Have any CZ Shadow shooters owned a xdm or m&p with the new Apex FSS (believe it's called that) or a Powder River Ultimate Match trigger? Both the aforementioned are touted as being very close to 1911 SA in terms of pre-travel, break and reset. I have a new xdm 5.25 9mm and a Powder River kit here but have yet to use them.

I'm a 1911 shooter and like everything about my 9mm with the proper ammo. I'm also a pretty good DA shooter from the revolver. I'm also a CZ75 fan; the fit, feel, accuracy. What I didn't like about my striker fire was the loooooong pre-travel and vague reset but that was before the newest Apex trigger.

I've done a lot of reading about Production, SSP, ESP, weights, DA/SA and SA only. Confusing but options are good. I do know adjustable rear sight and f/o front are must-haves for me.

But there are no Target Shadow non-firing block 9mm for me to test locally. How is that SA compared to a striker fire with the new kits I mentioned?

And how is the SA trigger compared to a nice 1911 in all aspects?

  8. Built some BC 135 RN with 3.9 WST at 1.35 OAL. Just a small sample. For the first time my Spartan fed a full mag of moly and/or lead, and the accuracy was laser-like! I may go out to 1.40-1.45 on the OAL and up to 4.0 WST, but it was refreshing not dealing with feed issues.

addendum: went out to 1.45 oal at 3.8 WST with the 135g BC RN. Feeding and accuracy perfection even in the cross-wind and off-hand. You saved me a lot of hassle! Many thanks.

All I run is Bear Creek molys in my Spartan 9mm. The MAX OAL that the BC 125g RN will run reliably in my gun is 1.120, with the 147g FP 1.130…. My preferred BC bullet is the 135g RN, with has a narrower ogive compared o the 125g thus I can load it out to 1.150... I back that 135g with 4.0 WST, it gives me a consistent 1000 fps (135 PF) out of my gun. I have shot thousands of these through Spartan and love this load. YMMV

  9. Unfrickinbelievable.....and good for you!!! I didn't want to jinx you, but I canceled an order from them last year after getting the same "in stock, ready to ship" only to cancel my order 2 weeks later when they told me the m&p 17rd mags were out of stock.

    Happy loading!

Got 8 genuine S&W 9mm magazines from Botach, $22 each, free shipping. Ordered the 28th, arrived the 30th.

  10. Whoa!!!! Good job on the mag score.

Hmmmm, Botach. Are they in stock, actually in stock and not just listed as so, and will they ship in the next 8 weeks? I hope you get them ASAP at $22 each with free s/h.

No idea, live help is not open. I'll try Monday and see if they are in stock and then decide.

They are in stock, ordered and got a tracking number. :surprise:

  11. For a gaming gun that'll probably get dropped, used and lovingly abused and modded, I'd pick a trusted gunsmith to build me a 45acp 1911 or spend $1000 on a STI Trojan. Wait, I'd get a STI Spartan from Dawson and choose a comp package. Wonder if the Dawson barrel feeds all bullet types? But an undercut trigger guard sure is nice.

Or a Springfield Range Officer and "trick it out" to your liking. Great lifetime warranty.

I had a PII 1.5 and a regular PII. I don't think the customer service is as good or quick as Springfield or STI. I also think it's a lot of money for a gaming gun, but that's purely my opinion based on my crappy shooting level and budget. You could allllmost have two STI for the price of 1 Baer. Nothing against Baer. My comments are based on gaming vs return on "investment" for the 45acp.

  12. A BE forum member commented in a recent thread that his Spartan 9mm OAL was in the 1.130+ range, and it was "odd" to him that my 9mm Spartan would only feed moly truncated cone flat points if the OAL was 1.120. Any longer and my gun will not go into battery. I chalked it up to different mags and bullet profiles.....or maybe my Spartan would get dirty after 100 rounds and create an issue? The Bear Creeks are clean, no fouling, no smoke.

This morning's shoot had my Spartan not go into battery several times as if the OAL was too long. I'd eject the round, clean it off and insert into the mags again, and it would either chamber no problem or I'd have to give the slide a little tap forward.

Mainspring is 14# and recoil is 9# if I remember correctly. Brass spits out about 4 feet in a nice neat pile. Mags are almost new; the oem Mec-Gar and 3 aftermarket Metalform 9 rounders. Last night all rounds were double-checked and OAL was at 1.120, give or take .002 (mixed brass, Bear Creek 125g TC, WST, Federal primer, Lee Deluxe with auto crimper I've used for years with no issue). I have a few hundred loaded up at 1.120 because my Spartan supposedly won't run any longer.

Tonight I built some dummy rounds out to 1.140 per that forum member's input and they all went in without issue! At the range I'd never get anything longer than 1.120 to work. And my old plated round nose 1.140 had no issues tonight with the Spartan. Now I'm confused. Why will my dummy rounds go into battery whether 1 or 2 in the mag or a full mag of dummy rounds in my gun room but not at the range?

Is it a firearm cleanliness issue causing the moly truncated cone flat point to stick and not let the slide chamber the round on my non-ramp barrel? Are Spartans running more reliably with a round nose?

  13. Much appreciated. I cleaned the f/o rod and it helped tremendously, but I think it's the width of the front (or the narrow width of the rear site opening) that needs changed. Compared to my other handguns the Spartan is nearly one big bland parkerized site combo that hides the target instead of frames it.

Again, thanks for the f/o rod offer. Ringing up Dawson today!

  14. Spent the first two years shooting a M&P 9 with 5" barrel. Then went to the sweet SA 1911 trigger in a Spartan 9mm. Dry fire practicing in the house is all fine and dandy, but I'm not 100% comfortable doing live fire drills at speed. I don't think it's the safety: dry firing practice has that manual of arm muscle memory down pat! I think it's the heft of the 1911 from the draw and transitioning that's got me pondering the move back to a polymer 9mm. Truth be known I have not done any matches with the Spartan 9mm, just dry firing and practicing at my range.

I thought the extra mass would make the already tame 9mm recoil even more like cheating, but I think the energy in motion is screwing me up. I have since sold that M&P, but have a two new xdm 5.25 9mm coming in this week and will give one a fair chance and break-in before deciding on which platform to stick to and (re)learn.

  15. My 9mm Spartan's sites are stock and for my eyes and ability they are simply "blah." Before I replace at least the front f/o site with another f/o from Dawson, has anyone put a new rod up front? The original rod is kind of a dull orange.

Or is it the width that's at least half the issue and I should just go straight for the .100 Dawson?

  16. I use WST in 9mm and 45acp and currently have Bear Creek 125g truncated cone flat point with 4.4g. The 9mm load for my 5" STI Spartan has to be around 1.120 otherwise it won't feed reliably (my M&P 9L eats up 1.15 without issue).

My XDM 9mm 5.25 comes in Tuesday. Per the feedback here I'm planning on a small batch of 1.14 to 1.150 and starting at 4.5 WST since 4.4 at 1.120 in the 5" is accurate, safe and soft shooting.

    Yay? Nay?
