  1. I'm hooked on 3-Gun and shopping for a shotgun. I've considered M2, SLP, Vinci and VersaMax. Narrowed it to SLP or M2 so I realize the big difference between the two is that the SLP is gas operated and M2 is recoil operated. Having only fired a Rem 1100 in 20 gauge, I'm left wondering about the difference in felt recoil between an SLP and M2? If anyone has shot the two with like ammo, I'd be interested in your comments, particularly long term fatigue at a long match and how quickly one may recover for a follow-up shot over the other.

  2. Using a Redding taper crimp die, I recently did some experimenting with different levels of crimp and accuracy. Loading Zero 185 gr LSWCHP and N310 I found that more crimp tightened up the group. Why not just try different amounts and see what works best for your load and your gun?

  3. I bought the Uniquetek one and I think it's a complete waste of money. There is no load on the bearing when pushing the handle down or pulling it up. Yes, it seems like you can tighten the large bolt a bit more, but that doesn't really do anything for you as the primer seater will just come up a bit more. The primer is either seated or not and it never failed to seat without it. Keep in mind that the shell holder plate still drags against the bottom of the press and THIS is where you feel resistance when you turn it.

  4. I have used 3.8 gr. of VV N-310 with the 185 gr. Star LSWCHP for ca 790 fps. it's a very accurate bullseye psitol load.

Tried this load today using Zero's 185 LSWC-HP and 3.8 VV N310, 2.15 COL. Tried 10 rounds with almost no crimp, 10 with .03 and 10 with .06 using a Redding taper crimp die. Amazing how tight the group got with the tight crimp. I won't quote the size since I was shooting off a manual rest. I'm going to repeat this with a machine rest. Oh, this is a super soft load too.

  5. David- Thanks for taking the time to post this. I hadn't considered any of what you've called out here, so this is a great head start for me.

We shot some clays this morning with the 1100 and the first thing we learned is that it hadn't been cleaned in 15 years. Yikes. Didn't function so good with light ammo, but worked better with harder stuff. I'm about to break it down and clean/lube everything.

  6. Since we will be shooting more than one gun per stage, do we need slings on either rifle or shotgun, or will we be dumping one before using the other.

    Ben,

The round count should be posted soon. But generally speaking for 3 GUN I bring double to round count:

    For a 20 ga:

    - For clay targets and most steel: 7 1/2 - 8 bird shot, I would go a little heavy on the load(20ga), sporting clays/pheasant loads are normally heavier than target.

    - For distant or heavy steel: #6 high brass/long range.

    - Slugs? Only if required

    - Buck shot? Not normally used, some matches have a limit on shot size (#4 comes to mind), the breacher door may need buckshot? Need to wait for more info.

Do you have a fixed choke? Choke tubes? Normally almost any choke will work unless you are under choked, say a cyl choke trying to knock down distant/heavy steel.

The MD may be able to give some more info, but I would guess this match will be friendly to almost all variations of shotgun setups.

    David E.

Thanks for the help. I'm going out tomorrow morning to shoot the shotgun and I'll see about the choke. I was looking at Winchester Winlite for a light load to fast follow-up shots? Any thoughts on this?
