  1. Can you say BENELLI?

    Thanks Benny

After being swung around to the idea of buying a Browning by Mike.45 & others over here & spending £800/$1360 on the gun brand new & then a further £350/$595 on shortening the barrel & re-choking & a further £120/$204 on a magazine extension & synthetic furniture for it not to work is not my idea of a fun time !

Constructive answers which may help solve the problems would be more use to me right now.

Took it too the range yesterday & with Birdshot I had one failure to feed in 100 rounds which I think is an acceptable percentage, however with slug its still hopeless the rounds fail to make it into the chamber & most of the time the nose of the round is hitting against the ejection port side of the chamber as the bolt closes & jams there.

I have read other threads on Brownings & slugs on this forum & have tried several brands of slug but without success so far, at this point in time im prepared to try anything that may help.

Failing that I might just start learning Italian !!!

Are the smilies broke or is it just me ?

  2. I dont actually think the mag spring has that much to do with it - the mag spring strength just needs to be weak / strong enough to close the carrier latch -

    Mike

Im still trying to get mine working right, im still running the original spring in the longer tube, if the pressure applied to the stack of rounds is weaker then surely the speed at which the fresh cartridge comes out of the magazine is slower & as such can have an effect on the "timing" of the carrier latch & cause stoppages & failure to chamber ?

Slugs are a major pain at the moment, I cant get any to run in the gun at all !

Only one brand of birdshot works with any regularity & im not convinced the magazine spring is all the problem.

Also it shot high with birdshot but a change of stock & bead cured that but with slug its useless, my old 3" remmy could hit clays with slug at 40m easily, with this thing I would be lucky to hit a barn door at that range, its throwing them everywhere, I suspect its because its a 3 1/2 " gun, my other 3 1/2" remington super mag was the same, couldn't shoot slugs straight for love or money, its a big chamber & short slugs leave a big gap to jump before its in the barrel & effects the acuracy, the chokes work loose too so right now its not my favorite toy.

I can see this thing getting bent around the nearest tree if it keeps this up !

Going up to Martin's today to try it again with a couple of different length Mag springs, will let you know how it goes.

Might see you at Harlow next Sunday but I still have to get the time off work & If the gun wont run it seems a waste of time anyway.

  3. The un-fired round in the chamber is because you are out-running the bolt. This will not happen in a match as you do not just hose one target. Also the lighten bolt will cycle faster. It is not a issue.

Benny is spot on, if your trigger finger can run faster than 0.13 sec splits then the hammer follows the bolt on a Bennelli, read Pat Kellys extensive investigation into the fastest firing shotgun here.

    http://www.multigun.com/speedsg.html

In a match this is never gonna be an issue, target seperation will take care of the problem.

  4. if you are referring sabots, I dont think there is anything in the rules that do not allow them.

For IPSC so long as its not metal piercing, incendiary or tracer its OK.

Its more a regional law issue which you need to be aware of If you travel to foreign matches, eg: Sabot slug are illegal in UK & so cannot be transported or used there.

  5. Rib & bead is fast on steel & most other targets with bird or buckshot within 30yds after that rifle type sights come into play more with slug & more distant targets.

I prefer a Rib & Bead i think its faster to pick up the targets when shooting a string in a line or swinging.

My shooting buddy is a "lefty" & loads from the California Competition Works "boxes" using his weak hand (a la Kurt Miller) four rounds at a time, this teqnique works the same no mater if your right or left handed & is fast, I personally like to keep the gun clutter free & dont like hanging ammo all over it, thus keeping it easy & fast to handle.

On choking my advice would be put a modified choke in there & leave it there ! I shoot everything through one choke (birdshot, Buck & Slug) & aim off to suit the targets, learn one choke & learn your pattern sizes with it, once you start mixing chokes you will never be able to keep track of every pattern size with all your different chokes & ammo brands out there.

    Good luck.

  7. Here in the UK our typical shotgun matches are made up of 12 stages

    those stages will usually be

2x 28 round stages lots of movement & multiple shooting positions

4x 12-18 round stages which include 2 or more shooting positions

6 x speed shoot type stages 6-8 round stages 1 or two shooting positions

This has proved to be a popular balance of loading skill v speed shooting ability

ask Kurt M or Pat Kelly what they think of UK shotgun matches, both of which could be found at the British Open this year

  8. I want to try and make some Texas Stars for shotgun COF's but have only ever seen distant photos of them and really need some close up pictures or designs so I can make some up. Does anyone have such plans so I can introduce these to unsuspecting UK shotgunners !!   :D

Any help would be appreciated ! Cheers

    Hi Mikey

What makes you think we're unsuspecting ? :P:ph34r:

  10. Hi Everyone

I live in the UK & shoot practical shotgun mostly, some friends & will be taking a vacation to Florida in June 2004, Can anyone recommend a Range close to the Orlando area where we could do some pistol/rifle/shotgun shooting while we are out there ?

    Neil. :D

  11. I was shooting in the uk mod team along side the guy who failed the chrono & was present when it happened I can tell you he was really mad, I only just scraped over myself, I had really wild variations in chrono readings & questioned the fact that the ammo had sat in plastic bags for nearly three days in all that heat, could it have had an effect ?

I know that he only failed by the smallest margin & it seemed very harsh to wipe his score, as graham says he probably wont shoot another international match again, its a shame. :(

  12. HI Guys

With regard to the Euro 2006 Shotgun Champs to be held in Greece I have been searching for some information on IPSC style shooting in Greece on the web, it appears that gun ownership in Greece is frowned upon as here in the uk, more so in fact, it seems that it is illegal to use a firearm at all outdoors unless on a shooting range, is that right ? Also there seems to be very few shooting clubs or ranges, my searches to date have found only four such places in the entire country :o

Does anyone else have any Info on this subject ?

PS. I saw Andy J with a video camera in Italy, I will try to get a copy.

  13. HI GUYS

I just thought i would add my bit for what its worth, the gas cylinder collar would certainly cause cycling problems, but is not fitted to the super magnum model at all, failing to hold open at all after each shot poiints to the easy loader, I have fitted quite a few & its a common fault the small tang that sticks up from the carrier is probably not engaging far enough into the carrier latch.

    hope this helps

  14. Hi Mike

Sorry we missed you guys at the weekend Both Jon & I were working & having used up all our remaining holidays on the trip to Italy we had to miss the harlow match, a blow really, Im sure you missed us (not)

how did it go, who won ?

We are building the match over the next two weekends & ill try to dig a nice deep pond in front of the sleeper stage if its in the match just to ensure everyone gets wet, tell Baza to bring some arm bands cos he wont touch the bottom !!!!!

I have told Jon to bring clothes & waterproofs to wales he just said " bring it on, ill be ready" :D

looks like wales will be another wet one as usual !!!!!!

    see ya soon mate

    Trigger !!!
