  1. Jeff, I had this guy cut down my 26" and rethread it: http://roseactionsports.com/default.aspx Cost was $75 including return shipping. He quoted me another $15 to reset the front bead. I think that may have been the special price for Arfcom members, not sure. I didn't have him reset the bead since I haven't decided what I'm doing for sights yet, I may go with clamp on rifle sights. Turnaround was extremely fast, he got my barrel yesterday and today he notified me that it was on the way back to me. I'll post when I get it back, but I've seen other examples of his work and they were all well done.
  2. It makes sure that the timing stays correct... When you weld up the end, you are adding more weight that the spring didn't have to account for initially, so removing enough material to balance it is key... remember though, if you are removing material closer to the axis, it has less of an effect.... I see...that's good to know. I'll try drilling a hole in mine after welding it up. One more question - does removing the material at the front of the receiver also help prevent getting your finger stuck when loading? It sure looks like it would help a lot. Between that overhang at the front and the hook in the receiver this thing is like a set of Chinese fingercuffs.
  3. Looks really good. My 930 barrel is out getting chopped to 22" and rethreaded right now, and I'm planning on welding up my lifter soon, so your posts have been very helpful. Just out of curiousity, what does lightening the lifter do? Does it improve reliability?
  4. I'm really looking forward to learning what you did at the front of the loading port and whether it works or helps in loading. My impression is that it's rather hard to get the shells far enough up into the tube, so I was thinking that removing some metal at the front would help that. I might work on welding up my lifter today. Just need to go get some new wire for the MIG welder.
  5. Looks good, I picked up a 26" 930 field model the other day and I just tonight got to mess around with it, although I haven't shot it yet. I need to send it off to get chopped just before the ports (turning it into about a 22" barrel) and rethreaded. It definitely needs the loading port hogged out, it's very narrow. I thought the trigger on mine was actually pretty good straight from factory. I don't have a scale, but it's fairly light and not much creep. It has a fair amount of take up that makes it act like a 2 stage rifle trigger. I don't think I'll bother with trying to polish it up, I'm not good enough that it will make any difference for me. The biggest impression I got was that it's very hard to load in it's stock form. The shells have to really be pushed far into the tube in order for them to stay in place, but to do that you have to stick your thumb way down in there. With the shape of the lifter it's like Chinese fingercuffs. I had a sore thumb after playing around with it for 10 minutes. The lifter is definitely going to need welded up.
  6. I'm wondering about adding a 10/22 rear sight to a Mossberg 930, like I've seen a lot of guys do with the Benellis. I could go with a clamp on Williams set, but I really like the idea of being able to fold it down when I'm not using it. I have a ribbed barrel. I'm wondering what height I would need the front sight to be. Should I just try something that's the same height as the rear when it's adjusted to the middle of its range, so that they're all on the same plane? Edit: How about something like this - using the original height 10/22 front and rear: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=9503/Product/10_22_reg__HIVIZ_SIGHT_SYSTEM
  7. Hi everyone, I've been lurking here for a long time and finally decided to join. A little about me - I've been shooting all my life (35 yrs) but only recently got into any competition. I started shooting BPCR about 3 years ago, and one year ago I got the urge to try 3 gun. So, I built an AR, grabbed my 870 and 9mm M&P and off I went. I've got the action shooting bug bad now. Too bad the nasty weather in Nebraska more or less shuts down most matches for a few months.
  8. Steveo, have you checked into the poly-chokes' performance? They look like a great idea in theory, but I've read they pattern irregularly.
  9. Long time lurker here and first time poster. I just bought a standard model 930 with a 26" barrel that I plan to have cut down just in front of the ports and rethreaded. It's good to see this gun is getting some attention from the 3 gun crowd since I've debated buying one for a long time. It was either this or a used 1100. I think Mossberg will really have a winner if they do it right. Heck, just offering a non-ported barrel would get them 90% of the way for most of the casual competitors.
