I am shooting a S&W M&P .357c in SSP IDPA. This is my carry gun and I love the pistol. When I bought the gun I wanted it in .40 but the only one the shop had set up the way I wanted was in .357c (I have trouble with waiting, mostly with the wife changing her mind on a new gun purchase). So I got the .357c and ordered a Storm Lake .40S&W barrel (factory configuration). The M&P .357c and .40c are identical internally (except the barrel of course) Can I still shoot SSP with the .40 barrel? I know I could if I had bought a .40c and then changed to the Storm Lake .40S&W. The only difference from that is the slide has .357 on it.
I have been told conflicting things and have sent an e-mail to IDPA headquarters but they haven't replied. Even the SSP part of the IDPA rulebook contradicts itself.
In SSP Permitted modifications: 6. Internal accuracy may be worked to include replacement of barrel with one of factory configuration and original caliber.
In SSP Excluded modifications: 6. A barrel of another caliber that is not offered in the original factory model.
By the way I read the S&W website, the model is an M&P Compact, offered in 3 calibers 9mm, .357Sig and .40S&W. So, by the Excluded Mods I can use it, but it is not the original caliber so by the permitted mods...I can't.....
I feel that part of the rules is to prevent someone from buying a gun and then changing to something like .38 super which isn't offered.
