  1. on the subject of dogs....

like all things in life, one must be responsible for ones actions and decisions.

I choose, therefore I am responsible. In a free society, it is part of the good and bad.

  2. Dump,

it goes something like this for me....

I would love to shoot a big match, like the Nationals but with a wife and 3 kids, the time away is tough.

I mean, if you were a baseball player in the minors and someone said "want to play at Yankee Staidum today?" would you say "no, i'm not good enough." HELL NO. You'd knock the guy down to get on the team bus!

So if you like in SoCal, like I do, the Steel Challenge is perfect. Big match, all the big shooters and I get to sleep in my own bed.

If the money is an issue, try the rimfire event. Same course of fire just no draw and less to enter. A lot of the big boys shoot it so you get to watch Micklek and TJ shoot. And if you have the pregame jitters, shooting the rimfire may help to get rid of them before the big money match.

  3. Dave,

If you are thinking 9mm then you are in the right direction. pf for challenge is sub minor. You are looking for accuracy with longest shot at < 50 yds. Load needs to be a very light bullet like a 115 @ 1000 fps or so.

For the gun recomendation, look at a commander lenght slide with a 2 port cone  comp using a govt lenght barrel.

Since capacity is a non issue, if you don miss, a single stack is OK. But if you already have a S_I gun, have a new top end fit and you can use the same lower.

    Short, light and quick.

  4. Dave,

I also shoot a 40 for SC but use frangible bullets, 125gr. I think they make them in 45. For SC they are the S*it.

No flying bits of lead or jacketing to hit you or anyone else. But the real great thing is you can load them light to get almost no muzzell rise, which helps on followup shots as well as plate to plate.

I shoot the 40 125gr with  3.0 gr Clays @ 1.110 OAL in an STI EDGE. I use a 7lb recoil spring and the gun is as reliable as can possibly be. Do not know the velocity. But since there is no real pf issues, I go based on feel.

I went through about 25 differnt combinations of bullets and powder to get this one and I really like it.

  5. I agree with Kath with one exception - the scope

The last time I checked, Doug Koenig shoots a tube and he seems to do allright. I have also noticed that several other top shooters use the c-more while others use the slide mounted optima/firepoint.

I think that you need to look at what works for you.

But Kath is right on about not getting one from unknown gunplumber. You will have nothing but problems.

  6. Kath,

The mini14 might feel wierd at first but the real problem is the mag changes.  it doesn't go in straight. not to mention the release is a little awkward being underneath.

Unless you live in The Peoples Republic of California stick with an AR.  Or so I'm told by those with far more expierence than me.

  7. Big Dave,

I use them for steel challenge loads. I get them from Grams. I really like them for steel plate shooting for the same reason as Bevin; no splatter.

As for IPSC loads, if you like shooting a light bullet real fast, they do not get any lighter.

  8. I got really lucky and hooked up with someone who has a lot of experience. He is an IPSC GM with over 10 years in the sport. Aside from having extra gear I can borrow or try out before I buy, he has been an excelent teacher of both the mental as well as physical parts of shooting. He has been able to save me 1,000's of $ and hours of time by narrowing down decisions to 2 or 3 options, mostlty based on $'s or feel. He also knows everyone, which is neat too :)  See if you can do the same.

  9. Chriss -you truly are a man of knowledge.

you are 100% right about the home gunsmith part.

If you want relaibility (and who doesn't) a professional job is key.

And the most overlooked part of the gun is the magazine. Have them tuned by an expert just like your gun. Bevin Grams at Grams Eng. is the hot ticket in that arena if you ask me.
