Added 3rd Annual Nordic Components Tactical Shotgun Championship

  2. Nordic Components and the Minnesota 3-Gun Group are pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Tactical Shotgun Match to be held on July 27th-28th at the Del-Tone / Luth Gun Range in St Cloud, Minnesota.

The first two years were well received by those that attended. For this year, we once again plan for at least 12 fun and challenging stages with a high round count that will make you feel the heat. The same great sponsors that provided for our great prize table are once again in line to do so, and we are working to add even more.

Registration is now open and the form is attached below. The match website http://tacticalshotg...ampionship.com/ will soon be updated to provide more match info. Contacts for the match will be Jay at jay@mn3gungroup.org and Jomar at jvillamor1@hotmail.com.

  3. The AP 4x4 are great and have never had a problem with them. They do take a little more extra work to load. As a Heavy Metal shooter with a slimmer build, the 4x4's save me a lot of space to carry my other mags. The cons are that they are hard to go prone on. So in the stages where I'll have to go prone, I either use the 4 round holders or move the 4x4's to my side.

If you get a pair of these you can adapt the the 4x4 with tec lok and remove them very easily when you know you're going to go prone.

The original AP Customs 4x4 already comes with the tec-lok.

  5. The modified lifter will not cause a jam with the process you described. All the modification is extending the lifter and filling in the fork so it does not catch your fingers.

I just had mine done by Jeff at C-Rums and am very happy with it. Just about everyone on this forum who've had work done by Jeff are happy customers. Email him and see what he can do for you...jeff@c-rums.com.

  6. Which matches have banned them? I have heard rumors but never specifics.

    Pat

Two matches I have attended restricted the use of these devices:

Ozark 3-Gun Championships in Missouri has this in their rules:

5.7a Prohibited devices include, but are not limited to, supporting devices that risk excess damage to props and/or pose a potential safety risk to shooters are prohibited. (i.e. the Hedgehog and like products are not allowed)

Blue Ridge Mountain 3-Gun Championships in Kentucky has a similar rule:

5.6.1 Supporting devices that risk excess damage to props or pose a risk to shooters are prohibited. (i.e. the Hedgehog and like products are not allowed)

  7. If you start watering down the meaning and the penalty of a DQ then things are not going to end well. And in multi-gun matches there are so many more ways for things to go wrong...

We are not watering down the penalty of a DQ. Safety infractions should stand as a DQ. No one will or should argue with that.

But for the infraction talked about here, you can look at it as enhancing the value of a procedural penalty for those kind of infractions.

  8. Ammo in any gun, regardless of whether it's in the tube, magazine, or jammed somewhere besides the chamber is essentially a loaded gun. Whether the rule states that guns must be completely unloaded or safety on, failure to follow the rule had tradionally gotten the shooter a match DQ. Yes, a firearm will not go off by itself, and there are times when the firearm is pointed in a safe direction or in a safe dump box. But the big point is the shooter's failure to make their gun safe as required. To give a simple 5 or 10 second procedural penalty for that violation is giving them the same little penalty for shooting while having a foot over a fault line. The consequences must be more severe than that. But a match DQ is sometimes considered too severe, so now there is a growing trend to issue a stage DQ for the "not so dangerous" safety violations.

The 2 ranges that host our 3-gun matches in Minnesota both require that guns must be completely unloaded before being abandoned. That was a rule that the old DPMS Tri-Gun Challenge had, and it had carried over to the two ranges. It's a rule we have to abide by when running a match, and we expect everyone to know that rule if they come to our match. We try to design our stages so all abandoned guns will not point toward anyone, whether they be in dump bowes or barrels or on a table that the shooter will not walk past of. By doing this allows us more safety and to be able to give a stage DQ rather than a match DQ for some situations. For the obvious safety violation such as breaking the 180, negligent discharges, and dropping a loaded firearm will always be a match DQ. But for a situation where an abandoned gun is still loaded but not putting anyone's safety at immediate risk (just like how it was in the other thread), we'd prefer to give a stage DQ rather than a match DQ.

Rules are there for some reason. And with any rules comes consequences if they are broken. We may not agree with them all the time, but if we want to go over and play in someone else's playground, we have to abide by their rules. Otherwise, stay in your own yard.

  9. This was a local outlaw match was put on by the Minnesota 3-Gun Group and hosted by a local gun range. The empty gun rule was a rule the host range wanted us to operate with. The stage in this topic was one I designed and the empty gun rule was also written in the stage description and procedure. And I was the one who had the displeasure of making the decision to issue a stage DQ.

"The bolt locked back" does not always mean the gun is empty. We as 3-gunners often takes risk like this, thinking that the gun would be empty without confirming it just to save us a second in time. But we as 3-gunners also know and have seen malfunctions occur in so many wierd ways. And we all know that mulfunctions are not limited to just the guns, especially while under the pressure of a timer. Its up to each of us to weigh how much trust we put into our equipment.

Chris's gun was exatly how he described it. The bolt was locked back and the live round was partially on the lifter and in the mag tube. In making my decision to issue the DQ, I took into consideration how visible the round was and whether the malfunction was easily resolved. In my opinion, they were both. With the bolt locked open, the round was clearly visible. When I had Chris clear the round from the shotgun, he did say that it was stuck in there, but he was able to remove it with his finger and without using any tools or a lot of physical labor.

I am proud of Chris's attitude about the DQ. I've seen shooters throw a tantrum or just pack-up and leave right after being DQ'd. Chris stayed, not just to help his squad finish the day, but to also help tear down the stages and clean up the range after. A very good example of sportsmanship.

To Chris: the match results are done but we are having a website issue. Out of 28 shooters in Tac-Optics, you still finished 10th with the stage DQ. If you would have not had that DQ, you would have finished 4th Place behind three veteran 3-gunners with major match experiences. For someone who just recently started shooting 3-gun and had only gone to 1 major match so far, you're doing very well.

Just stay out of the Heavy Metal or I might have to DQ you for just showing up.

  10. I didn't call till 16;00 Friday so I'm sure it didn't get shipped til Monday or Tuesday. Just hope it comes in when the wife isn't home ;)

Do what I do, I just say that its a part I ordered for someone else, hide it in the rafters for a few days, and then implement it into my gun after some time.

If she ask about the new look of the gun, I claim that its always been like that. If she ask about the sinking rafters, oh boy.

  11. I've never owned an M1A and my only experience with one is taking a few shots from a buddy's standard M1A. So I am no where close to being someone who could give a review of the M1A. I do know that Pat Kelley and Bryan Ray shoots the M1A in 3-gun and they are two of the top Heavy Metal shooters.

I do however own and compete with a JP LRP-07, and I can say that it is the best 308 rifle I've ever owned and shot. I've owned a DPMS and a POF 308 and I've shot a FAL in a match, but the JP has out-performed those rifles. I was apprehensive about spending so much for the JP, but right out of the box, I was so impressed with the quality and craftsmanship. The side charging handle was a very nice feature. The JP's low-mass bolt and loss-mass buffer working in tune with the adjustable gas block amazingly reduced the felt-recoil that 308 rifles are so well known for. The JP was well worth the wait and price.

I've never owned a scope or a rifle rest, so I can't be a good judge of the JP's true accuracy. My JP is equipped with iron sights only using a lyman globe front sight with a needle tip front post (and a set of eyes modified by a very expensive Lasik procedure). But I have engaged an 8" steel plate at 400 yards and hit it consistenly and repeatedly with the JP. I've never been able to do that consistently with the other rifles. The JP is quite a performer, I just wish I can be as good while under the pressure of that damn timer.

So I can't compare the the JP to an M1A, but compared to other 308 AR platforms, it is in my opinion the best there is, all the way from appearance to performance.
