  1. For local stuff, the gun(s) get a cleaning the night before.

Ammo is loaded days or weeks ahead of time in case something breaks on the loader so i have time to replace it.

One thing i started doing though which i seem to really prefer, is to simply bag everything up the night before. On top of that i also load my mags the night before. It's a relatively minor thing but showing up ready to go is real nice and having loaded mags is just one less thing to think about, especially if you get stuck in the *$s line for 20 minutes and end up running late.

  2. Aeropb's avatar would make for an interesting hardcover pattern specially on the Classic (aka amoeba, turtle) targets, Just make sure the inner circle provides at least 25% of the A-zone. I would be generous and give about 33-50%.

Even more sick and twisted would be to vary the angle of the classic target from 10:30 through 1:30 clock positions, but always keep the symbol vertical. devil.gif

I like it!! Would make for some fun shooting and steer people into having to AIM biggrin.gif

  3. I've found it very interesting what some folks here will load for a match, and what some wont. Those that basically reload any headstamp for a match, is having a couple (or the occasional) ammo related jams or misfeeds during a match acceptable? Or have you not had any at all? Just curious.

I almost never have a jam, misfeed or anything ammo related anymore. Found what works and i leave it be.

Part of that is cleaning the gun before every match. Period.

Now i've probably gone and cursed myself for the upcoming Area 1 match angry.gif

  4. AMERC and any of the ones with dates/numbers goes into the someday to be recycled trash bucket. SPP goes into a separate bucket maybe to get used one day but usually given away to somebody who wants it.

Everything else gets used in matches from local to Area matches.

Don't understand the R-P and CBC problems in .45 some people have. They work as well as any other case for me, including Winchester and Starline.

  5. Had a blast at the match. This was my second WSSSC and 3rd match at Rio. Other one was Area 2.

All i can say is great job by Steve and everybody involved from the stage designs to the ROing to the stats people getting everything done and blah blah blah.....you get my drift.

If you enjoy shooting 1911s, this is a "MUST DO" match!!!

Thanks to everybody involved and to everyone on squad 7 bow.gif

    You all ROCK!!!!

  6. I had a discussion with my sons Pediatrician about my reloading and possible exposure to lead. He asked if I let him suck and chew on raw lead bullets. When I answered in the negative he said not to worry about it then.

    I like that doc!!

The one that called me about my levels is a sports medicine doctor. By his description, you'd have thought i was drinking uranium while loading.

  7. Inkman:

If 3gr difference in bullet weight is going to make or break a match, then you are playing the game too close to the line (160 PF), which is why I always recommend the minimum PF PLUS 12, so instead of aiming for 160 yo go to 172. You can then pretty near guarantee making PF anywhere.

Everything is good now. I don't go below 170 anymore. It was just the fact of thinking your are at 167 or 168 with a 200gr bullet, factor in differences in chronos at the major matches, temp, elevation etc. Then come to find out when you see them weigh your bullet and the scale says 197gr, it was a sweat maker surprise.gif and seeing 165.05 (my load) as low major for the match was a wake up call. That was when i started weighing them instead of relying on what the manufacturer said they were.

And to stay on topic, that was just one of the advantages of SNS over the others i've used. If it was labeled 200gr, it was 200gr. I checked hundreds and hundreds from batches before giving up and realizing they deliver what they say they do.

  8. I generally avoid cast lead bullets due to smoke, etc but .45 cal bullets are so expensive that lead makes sense cost wise. I'm looking for some recommendations for cast .45 bullets. Accuracy, smoke, lead fouling in the barrel, and delivery time are all important factors.

I started with MBC. They were fine at the time but actual weight of the bullets were off by a few grains more often than not on the light side.

I've also shot Bear Creek Molys.

Then i met Jim and Ryan at the SS Nationals last year. They supported the sport, so i tried them out, sight unseen. The 200gr LSWCs ALL weighed 200gr or maybe a hair more. Makes a big difference when you are chronoing a true 200gr boolit and not what you THOUGHT was 200gr but was actually 197. Can make or break a match right there.

As far as the lube they use, it was always in the groove, and not at the bottom of the box. Unfortunately for them, i started casting my own (Sorry Ryan but you know that already lol).

So just my 2 cents, from the three cast bullet manufacturers i've dealt with, i can say that SNS Casting is hands down the best in every aspect, from consistency of alloy, lube and weight, to fast shipping AND they support the Action Pistol sports. 5 stars in my book and i recommend them first to anybody i know wanting to shoot cast bullets.

If you ever get a chance to squad or shoot with them, do it. They are good folks.

  9. Had mine checked a few months ago since i was at the doc for a knee injury anyway. Came back high teens (i forget exactly). He told me i'd get a call from CDC and they'd want to inspect my home. I simply told him there was no chance that was gonna happen. They'd need a court order before i let them in my house.

Long story short, all i received was a letter on lead exposure and how to keep lead levels low, blah blah blah...

I now do a better job of cleaning up after loading, tumbling and casting. Numbers are likely much lower now.

  10. This is an interesting thread.

When something happens that i am upset about, the first word out of my mouth, even while still shooting, is usually S&*T. Sometime loud, sometimes quietly.

Then after the stage is over, i look at what happened, tell myself that the stage is done and nothing can change what has already been shot/scored. THEN i make a mental note that i need to practice more on what caused the messup. Certainly won't drastically change things mid-match, but come practice time i definitely will remember what happened and try to improve on it. Just a few cents...

One thing i can say for sure is that dwelling on a bad run (for me at least) will just lead to a bad attitude and not doing what i should for the next stage. Best thing i ever did was learn to have fun and not take every stage/match as a "win or my life sucks" attitude.

  11. 2nd time at Rio for me and my first Area 2 match. The loooooong drive down there is more than worth it. Period. Every penny spent on rooms, food etc is nothing compared to the fun match and some of the best stages i've ever shot. Big thankyou to everybody involved in putting on the match. ROs were great people to talk to and ask questions of.

I know for a fact that the guys i shot with had a great time and we all will be back. I'm certain of that.

See ya in a couple months for the WSSSC bow.gif

  12. Learned early on to always have one at the bigger matches. Yes, my main gun is in great shape, but stuff can and does break, sometimes at the most inappropriate times (like a major match).

I've only had to go to it a couple times, but it is great peace of mind to know it's there.

    Al

  13. Yes.....i'm just joking, but eliminating PF is no different that setting up stages geared to one specific set of skills.

Just go out there, shoot and have some fun with probably the best friends you'll ever make participating in a sport together.

  14. I think we should also eliminate anybody under the age of 40 from competing.

It's just not fair that those younger ladies and gents who are in better shape than me and have better eyesight should be able to go up against us older, slower guys tongue.gif

  15. Yesterday and today were my first two matches shooting single stack and I have to say, I really like it.

Yesterday it was me and one other shooter. Today, I was the only single stack shooter.

It certainly takes away from the fun a bit not having others to shoot against. Care to discuss why there are such low turnouts for single stack?

I shoot SS and only SS but it is somewhat masochistic. I have to really take time with my pre shoot stage work and get it mapped out in my head. Once I have it down it takes so little to throw off your round count and force you into a standing re load. I had a great stage going today and had a very rare failure to feed, my hits were great but that standing reload felt like forever! I refuse to quit until I get to A class in SS but it seems like a steep hill sometimes. Practice, practice, practice. I wish more people would shoot it localy here as well but we get anywhere from 5-15 SS shooters at an avg club match.

    5-15 SS shooters???surprise.gif

That's a SS dream!!! Our local matches usually have 60 to 80+ shooters and we're lucky to have 5 in SS. To get anywhere near 15, it has to be a big State or Area match.

Can't wait for the WSSSC in Az again. Now that is a SS dream come true. Stages set up like regular stages but everybody shooting 1911s. Some with real high rd counts too!! Very nice biggrin.gif
