  1. Pick a mission, and buy the rifle for it. LR and 3-gun require different gear. If you want to get a LR rifle do it, but if you want a 3-gun rifle you'll have to have a different rig. I have both, I've successfully shot run-and-gun stages with my LR rigs and 600 yards with my 3 gun rifle, but you'll always do better with a rifle designed for the job. If you want a LR rig, go to Snipers Hide and get advice from us there, but realize you can set up a no-compromise 3-gun rifle and still have fun to 600+ with it. Decide which you really want and build a rifle for it, a compromise will always be a compromise.

  2. I started out with gear close to yours last year. I had a Springfield 1911 and an 870 that I put a Nordic tube on, and used an M4 style Bushmaster. My original plan was to buy an M1A and keep my pistol and shotgun. Although I like running single stack in USPSA, I found that I didn't really like either a single stack or pump shotgun in 3 gun. Now I've bought a used FN SLP and am shooting my wife's <_< Springfield XDM, and having a lot more fun. I did upgrade rifles, too, I'm shooting a BHE AR15. Personally I'd say get a good AR and upgrade or share the other gear for now until you've really gotten into 3 gun and want more of a challenge.

  3. If it is .308 caliber, not a 30-30, 30-06, etc, etc. I wouldn't shoot the 175g. I would shoot the old 162 gr and the 1:12 to optimize trajectory. It is tried and trued.

I have a decent amount of experience around .308's and LR shooting, but I've never seen anyone shoot a 162gr bullet. 175's are one of the standard, the tried and true, along with 168's. 168's work great for shorter range but 175's are better beyond around 600. I'm shooting Sierra Palma 155's now, my rifle doesn't like Lapua's.

My .308 still has the Remington 1/12 barrel and shoots great with 155-175's. I'm sure you'll be happy with your Savage.

  4. Glad you made it and can still do things you enjoy! I just sold mine, I liked the way the 1000RR felt at throttle lock way too much. I'm rolling the money into a tractor, I think I can resist the need for speed a little better on that.

  5. From a google search about Terry Cross: "Pushing 139 Lapuas, the .260 AI (an Ackleyized 6.5mm-08) delivers 6.5-284 ballistics in a more efficient, magazine-friendly cartridge."

Since that article, Terry is now recommending the straight .260 instead of the AI version. Here's the one he built for me.

  6. No parallax adjustment, it's not needed on a scope of this power.

After seeing mine, a buddy ordered one for his new rifle as well, and we both sighted them in and played with a few loads Saturday. The big center dot isn't good for shooting groups (no surprise, that's not what it's designed for,) but we ended up putting the bullseye on the bottom of the target and using the 300 yard dot at 200. It worked well enough to let us know what the rifles liked, I'm really impressed with this scope for the money.

  7. From the responses, I guess I'm an idiot.

I had this happen to me in a 3 gun match a month or so ago. I was on the pistol part of a stage and did a slidelock mag change with my 1911. When the mag came out of the pouch, the top round had shifted forward a little. Apparently the round popped out as it went into the magwell, because when I dropped the slide it seated the round backwards into the barrel with authority. And yes, I'm sure the round hadn't been put in the magazine backwards. ;) The RO just shook his head and said, "Now, I ain't never seen that before!"

  8. Purchased the gun and looking to upgrade with new stock and bottom metal. Looked into Manners stocks and came across the MCS-DBM Mini Chasis and wanted to know thoughts and experiences.

Couple of the Stock designs were intriguing but would like to get one that has LOP adustment as well as adjustable cheek height. Any suggestions? If I go with A Mcmilluan design, can the MCS be adapted or is it a waste of money at that point?

    THANKS

These are just my opinions, so take them as such. I don't own a Manners, but I've spent time behind several of their models, they make a great stock. The Mini Chassis is ideal when you're going to be shooting several actions in the same stock, but if you're mating the stock to one action it's still better to skim bed it. If you don't go with the Mini Chassis, pillar bed it in. Either way is fairly easy to do yourself, I've done several with great results. It ain't rocket surgery, but skim bedding is easier.

Adjustable cheekpiece is great, if you go McMillan ask for the KMW Loggerhead hardware, it's the best one they have IMO. I think that's what Manners uses by default. My McMillan has adjustable LOP, but after setting it the first time (at what turned out to be the exact same length as a standard Remington stock) I haven't touched it again. Any future stocks I'll just buy that length to start with and save the expense.

You won't want to mate a Mini Chassis to a McMillan, it's not worth the hassle. If you want the chassis, just get a Manners. I do know someone was working with McMillan a while back to develop a mini chassis in one of their stocks, but I don't know whether they would be available in their other stocks or if the project is even still in the works.
