  1. I just picked up two rifles in 6.8 that I planned to use for 3gun until I can purchase an upper for .556/.223. What are your experiences with the cartridge, and the intricacies of reloading it. Is it ballistically good for our game, and what bullet weights and types are the most effective for competition. Another question I have is what powders do you find are best for this cartridge.

    Many thanks for your input.

  2. Santa Fe is a hoot. It reminds me of Joshua Tree, Landers, and Malibu all rolled into one. I ended up there just out of circumstance. I reserve the right to move in the future of course. ABQ is definitely more my style actually, but right now I'm in Santa Fe for a bit. Back in CA for the holidays, then back to NM in about three weeks. (After the quick road trip)

So when I am here in CA I will shoot production with my set up. Then when I get my equipment set up, I'll be reloading in NM.

Going to have a safe sent ahaead. Woo hoo! I'm loving just the ability to take all my guns tothe range and not be concerned about questions, laws, etc. Just freedom within reason. I so like that.

  3. Still have our place in CA Chuck. Just got a small place for me in SF. They will follow in the next couple of years. I dryfire there living by myself, and will now be reloading and shooting every weekend I am not traveling home.

Really like NM. Beautiful, rural, natural. It is the antithesis of SoCal. Not a bad thing at all.

  4. Never whack the throttle wide open from a stoplight on a 150hp sport-touring bike because your wife is revving hers like she wants to race. 700lb shaft-drive touring bikes are not meant to wheelie. I had to throw those underwear away.

Make sure you tell your wife your steel gong isn't rifle rated BEFORE she tries out your buddies new AR loaded with surplus M855 Ball. It was a nice shot though.

I could go on all day with stupid things we did while I was in the Army. It's a wonder I wasn't killed or court-martialed.

Never go on a 12 mile road march wearing brand new jump boots. It was either those or a broken in pair of jungle boots, but they were still damp from the day before. I chose poorly.

Never get into a beer drinking contest with a sergeant first class in the german bundeswehr, especially if it's the night before you take their version of the PT test.

Never try to use the 1SGs HMMWV to tow a dead tank the last 10 feet to it's parking spot in the motor pool. "Honest Top, I was just driving down the line when I heard a bang and tranny fluid started running everywhere, I don't know what happened!"

Never step off the back deck of an M1A2 tank without looking at the ground below. I didn't realize the driver had pulled forward a few feet and that nice sand pile I was going to hop onto wasn't there anymore, instead it was a 10 foot drop into a creek bed. At least the Army finally had a reason to rebuild that knee that had been bothering me for a few years.

A roll of toilet paper soaked in break-free and placed over the standoff spike of a HEAT round makes a pretty fireball going down range. The Battalion CSM, who just happened to be in the tower, was not impressed.

The bottle of Wild Turkey that the tank commander didn't tell anyone he had hidden in the breach makes a nice fireball too.

This one had me going. Thanks for sharing!

  5. I am now a New Mexican. I have a NM license and I keep a residence there in Santa Fe. With that I can now bring all my 3-Gun stuff from storage in Washington to my place in NM. I am flying up tomorrow and driving the stuff down next week.

ARs, SGs, of various size and shape. Even lots of tactical stuff and piston driven 6.8s. Not to mention ammo, pistols, and non 3G stuff that is not CA legal.

I cannot wait to get out and shoot the heck out of these guns next year. If you shoot 3G in NM, CO, AZ, or West Texas, you will probably see me in the next few years. I'm sure I will have a ton of questions. Feel free to share your experiences with me when we meet.

God bless, Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to you.

  6. Wow, calling someone a cheat. There is no advantage gained by using the components discussed and configuring them into a pistol which is identical to the original pistol. Think about what Warp is saying. We are not talking about unfair advantage, or unsportsmanlike conduct. How would this be different from someone changing the finish or stippling their frame? We are not talking about a frame that has a light rail, or not. This isn't about adding weight like a tungsten guide rod, or a trigger mod. This is like the frame for a G34 vs. G17. Talk 'til your blue in the face about that one, I still think getting a rise over things like that shows an impractical view that does nothing for our sport.

  7. That is why I have had issues with working for large companies where I have limited power., I just get too tripped out when the bureaucracy is so large that it gains a life of its' own. If I cannot name at least 75% of my coworkers by name after the first day, I've got a problem. Too easy for lazy and inept people to just skate. Then others who are alert, sharp, and focused on quality get the lions share of the work? Yeah, can't do it. I'd just piss a bunch of people off.

Heck, I can't even stand watching someone else coach my kids soccer team. I coached five seasons before I could sit on the side lines. When do you give up?

Never, get another job. Start looking now.

  8. I bought my G17 a few years back and was at the range with a friend who I've known all my life as a very good shot. He can shoot my G17 so well, and accurately that I know it is not my gun or loads when I am missing. He makes very nice smiley faces on a USPSA metric from 20-25 yards away with the standard two handed, thumbs-forward grip. I cannot do this with the pistol myself yet, but if he can, then with practice I should.

It has a tungsten guide rod, and Sevigny sights, all black. That is all.

  9. That projectile will touch the rifling if out too far. Used to load these for a little while and had to set my OAL back and lower my charge a bit. The plunk test should be tried with a freshly resized and UNLOADED case first. This will illustrate with 9mm in particular, what your loaded rounds depth should be as the 9mm cartridge seats against the mouth of the case inside the chamber. Your bullet profile will often determine or effect your seating depth. (Not to mention mags) So try the plunk again without a bullet in the case. That is what your cases should look like even with a bullet in the case. Then make sure it fits your magazines and you should be good to determine you proper charge from there.

  10. A VFD is way better than a phase converter. It does the PC job plus you can set it up for variable spindle speed and braking. Another plus is VFDs are very quiet. A rotary phase converter is noisy.

You will need a good Kurt style vise, vise stop, set of R8 collets, good drill chuck or 2, set of drills, taps, some end mills, edge finder, dial indicator, micrometer, digital caliper, etc. The list never ends, but you can get the basics and get started and add as the project needs dictate.

I am very fond of our Kurt vise and wish we had the swivel base. I would agree on getting a VFD. Literally knew nothing about them in October of 2003.. Went to work managing a factory that month and by December I was programming drives on all the machines and confidently adjusting torque and speed parameters. Great tools, and yes much quieter, lighter, and easier to manage than a phase converter. Also much more versatile. I like Teco/Westinghouse myself. Their tech support is out of Texas, and those guys are great to deal with. Even if you find a used or older model, they usually can help with it.

  11. Had to laugh at this one. You kinda got me. I've been a cop for 17 years and recently have been carrying a CZ 9mm for plain clothes duty. For the life of me I can't remember the model as I read this. I am happy to say that the majority of the department i work for are actually really good shooters. Oh and I'm a GM shooter in limited, limited 10 and single stack. So do I pass or fail.

:roflol::bow: And there you have it. Awesome...

  12. We had some moron decide to pull a drive by at the local Christmas tree lot. No one hurt, but jeeze!

I don't know if I'm just becoming a grumpy old fart, but people just seem to be getting more stupid. I think we've reached our mental evolutionary peak in some gene pools.
