Fair enough Chuck, but only one person seems to be B.H. in the posts about this match in regard to P.S.

Agreed.  Not saying you guys, or CD, need to change at all.  Each match has it's own flavor.  There are lots of options on matches to go to.  I just wouldn't discount concerns because you don't agree with them.  Recognize them and either decide to incorporate them or not.  It's also probably not worth arguing about them on forums.  If you look at the statement from the Governor's Office, that's a great statement.  Acknowledges issues, thanks those who should be thanked, and commits to improvement.  I know, even without being there, that the CD guys were not happy with the way things went.  Too many cooks in the kitchen.  We had the same issue with the first year of Crimson Trace.  Stuff was F'd up.  I'm not saying I handled the criticism any better of that match.  Possibly worse.  But I learned from my mistakes.  (I hope.)  As much as the nice comments are great to hear, the criticism can do more to improve the match.  Of course I think the criticism would be effective privately and probably a lot easier to respond to without putting guys on blast on a forum anonymously.

  2. I'm with you on some but not all Kurt. The PractiScore thing is a valid concern. I'm not saying it needs to be changed but it is valid. When I sent out match surveys I had the hardest time not addressing every concern. 20 guys would say the courses were great and one guy would say they needed more something. And I'd want to fix that one thing. It was hard to step back and say no. But saying no didn't mean it wasn't a valid concern, it just needed to be weighed against the benefits and costs of changing to accommodate that issue.

Sold out in 2 hours  enough said.......      How many other MG matches move around the country ??

As far as I know 3GN matches are the only other ones that routinely move.  But there are similarities to USPSA there.  Both are National organizations meant to serve members around the country (world).  The majority of major 3 Gun matches are not affiliated with a larger organization.  They are run by an individual or a group, usually based at the range they are held.  Think Rocky Mountain, SMM3G, Ironman, FNH, Rockcastle.  Most are single matches tied to the range that holds them.

  4. Mark, sometimes sponsors care about which table their product goes to, other times they just pick the sponsorship that is available.  If a match offers 5 Division Sponsorships, Tact, Lim, Open, Heavy Iron and Heavy Scope, and the first 4 are gone, you might see a company that makes scope mounts signing up to be the Heavy Iron sponsor.  Doesn't mean they want their gear to go all on that table, but that's all that was left.  Additionally if a company donates 10K in product for a match, they may or may not want all of that going to 3 guys shooting a tiny division.  It's a decision that should be made between match staff and the sponsor.  It should be clear what the expectations of both are.  Sometimes you may see a sponsor that wants to flood a table and drive interest in that division.  If JP decided they wanted to make a splash at the MG Nats by offering a JP LRP-07 to the top three shooters in Heavy Limited this year, I'm betting you'd see some heavy hitters swapping to that division to try and clean up.  But does that really offer any benefit to JP or the MG Nats to artificially stimulate interest in a division that has very few people who really want to shoot it?

It's a USPSA National Championship, part of a NATIONAL organization. You dont see any of the handgun nationals stay at the same venue year after year. It should move every year.

First off, there is no obligation that as a National Championship that it should move every year.  The obligation is that the org puts on the best National Championship they can and make it accessible to members.  Vegas has a number of advantages over other venues, the most significant being low cost airfare and lodging options.  This alone makes it accessible to any shooter in the country.  If they don't want to fly, that's fine, but there is no obligation to hold the match in driving distance from a bunch of folks routinely.

Second even if there was, Vegas would satisfy that requirement.  It's within driving distance of a significant portion of the membership.  Texas and California pretty much dominate other states as far as participation.

I'm guessing you haven't been shooting a really long time.  Travelling Nationals are a fairly new occurrence.  There was a time when pretty much everything was at PASA.  If you didn't like Illinois, every couple years they might hold something in PA, or Reno.  But that was a rare exception.  The MG Nats are held in Vegas for a reason.  It's the only venue that has come close to self supporting the match.  Every other MG, or 3G Nats lost significant amounts of money.  And history has shown that moving an event year to year results in lower participation rates the first year at a minimum. Heck, take a look at Steel Challenge for an extreme example of that.  MG Nats in Vegas has proven for the last couple years to be a success.  It would be foolish to move it at this point.

What advantage is there to moving an event every year, or every two years?  Some competitors don't have to fly and others do.  It's a break even proposition.  But you also have a slew of new costs.  Transportation of existing props, logistics of figuring out lodging, food vendors, tent suppliers, water, ice etc. all become more expensive when you move every year.  Even if you pay to haul most of your gear, there are still additional expenses the pile up.  Inevitably you have to buy new stuff, walls, fault lines, nails etc whenever you roll into a new town.  It's financially irresponsible to move a successful match, just to put it a couple hours closer to someone.

Fail on continuing to have it on the western half of the country. Its been there long enough. Bring it east of the Mississippi River.

Yeah, that totally sucks.  They finally built it up to the point where the match fills and it's considered a premier match.  Totally time to rip it down and start again from scratch with a new venue and staff.

  8. First off I want to apologize to all the shooters and staff for this match.  At this point we are going to have to postpone the 2016 Starlight 3 Gun event.  It will not be held in November, 2016.  We are currently looking at options to hold the event in early 2017.  At this point we could put on an event, but it wouldn't be up to the standards we need it to be.  I hope we will have a final answer on the plans for the future next week, but I wanted to give everyone as much time as possible to change plans as needed.

Thank you all for your support of this match so far.  I, as well as several others, put their hearts and soul into this and I want it to be perfect.  If you can hang tight till next week I will have information on what's happening in the future.

  9. Sorry guys.  For some reason my notifications aren't working on this thread anymore.  There will be places to dump pistols on every stage for sure.  Staging pistols is another matter.  Ideally I'd say have a holster.  I usually try to have staging locations for every pistol start but I know last year I screwed up and forgot one or two.  I will try to have a stage location for everything for this match.  It just might add a bit of time getting to it.

They don't make the Camp Carbine anymore. I used to have one in 45. Was fun but having 1911 mags limited capacity. The 9mm version uses smith and wesson mags not super common and expensive.

    Pat

Nope, but they still exist.  And Smith mags are not that expensive.  $34.95 for 30 rounders.  Lots of options.  Not saying I'd go that way, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a 2011.

  11. Yep, new website.  Rules and stages are posted. There may be some small changes between now and then but this should give everyone a real good idea what's coming. Let me know if there are any questions.

The shotgun targets in stage 6 and 8 are not accurate. Shows a two bird swinger but it will actually be a single bird pigeon kicker. Posted the wrong draft but should have the correct version up soon.

  12. The 2016 Starlight 3 Gun Championship will be held at the Copperhead Creek Shooting Club just outside Marble Falls, Texas November 8-12, 2016. The 8-9 will be the reserved for the Staff Match and overflow. The main match will be the 10-12. This year we will have 8 stages, plus a shoot off on Saturday night. I flew down to Texas at the end of January to take a look at the range and meet the locals. I'm really looking forward to this year. We'll be able to do a lot of things here that we haven't before. Expect this to be the biggest night time 3 gun match ever. Great stages, great food, live band, lights, lasers and gun shots, what could be better?

Registration will open on April 3, 2016 at 5:00 PM Pacific on Practiscore. I'll post a link a little closer to that date. You'll be able to register at that time and a payment link will be sent soon after. You'll need to pay within 30 days of registering or your entry will be deleted. If there is a problem, or you think you'll have a sponsored slot, just let me know and I'll work with you. My email is chuck@andersontactical.com I don't want to drop anyone, but if I don't hear from you, either a payment or an email saying why, I'm assuming you don't want to go.

Information will be posted at www.starlight3gun.com You can find more information about the venue at http://www.copperheadclub.com/ Hotels in the area are pretty expensive I'm finding. I would suggest booking as soon as possible. If you don't get in you can always cancel later. We'll have a small block of rooms available, but I won't know how many until we get staffing sorted out.

Timney Triggers is back as our presenting sponsor, as well as our two additional premier sponsors, the NSSF and Sig Sauer from last year.

Chuck Anderson is MD and Travis Gibson is the Rangemaster.

Just wanted to let everyone know we have a new website www.starlight2016.com

We have some new info up now and more should be coming in the next week or two. I have the stages in hand from the graphics guy and they look great, just need to make a few tweaks and they will be ready to post.

We are close to full for the main match. There are only 112 slots for the main match and 96 for the staff/VIP match. If you want to shoot during the main match you need to enter now. If you're entered but haven't paid or squadded you need to get that done as well. Choice of match (main/staff) will go in order that you paid for the match. If you registered months ago but didn't pay, you need to get that done. Otherwise you may have the pleasure and joy of shooting the staff match with me. If you have any questions, concerns, reasons why you aren't paying for the match (possible deployment, job change, sponsor slot) please email me at chuck@andersontactical.com If we already talked about it...email me again because if it happened more than a week ago, I probably don't remember. I don't want to boot anyone out, but I don't want people who want to come not able to get in because someone is taking up their spot without paying.

  13. Here's the deal for me. I don't really care what scoring system Pete uses. I'll be there. Anyone who decides to skip a Pete match because they have concerns about total time scoring or whatever is dumb. Whatever system is used, Pete will put on a great match that everyone there is going to have fun at. I have my preferences and stuff I'd like to see, but at the end of the day I'm just one shooter and it's Pete's match to run as he sees fit. I trust him enough to know I'll have a worthwhile match. Without a doubt.

There are plenty of three gun matches out there now. Enough that customers should be able to pick and choose a bit who they want to invest their money with . Who is going to put on a 5 star match, vs spending maybe a little less, and getting a 2 1/2 star boondoggle. I don't have enough time available to waste on lame matches. But I sent my check in for this one on January 1.

  14. Looked at it and I just can't see what problem you are solving. Without breaking out my math hat it still seems like if you have an issue on a short stage it's going to hurt worse than a long stage. There are also some really significant swings in your results. 9 places in a 69 person match is almost 15% change. I'd much rather see the stages given some weight value ahead of time if you're going to give them points. I know Pete has enough experience to have a really good idea what the fast time on each stage will be. That would allow for a scoreboard to actually work as well. Keith is ahead by 43 points, with stages worth 230 points left to shoot. I'm just not understanding what this actually solves.

  15. I'll take a look at this in a minute. Regardless of the validity of the scoring system, I think it takes away from one of the really cool things Pete did when he started this match. By squadding the top guys together by Division and using straight time you could actually keep score during the match and know who was in the lead. I thought it made for some great excitement on social media while the match was going on. Daniel Horner is in the lead by 3.2 seconds, with Nils close behind and Brian Nelson just 4.8 seconds out of the lead. Etc. You get it. It was easy to understand, made sense and it was correct at the end of each stage. This will take away that ability. We think DH is in the lead, but we haven't done a calculation yet and can't do it until the match is over. But once everyone is done shooting we'll apply some math, burn some incense, sacrifice a chicken and poke a voodoo doll with some needles and tell you who won, (hint, it's Daniel)
