  1. As a match director, this kinda stuff bewilders me. Major rule changes are posted on an internet forum as a "clarification," but not included in the email based newsletter I received 2 days ago? I ran my monthly match today and told a shooter his 40 to 9 conversion barrel was not legal...

    Was he shooting SSP?

  2. I use an RCBS 502 that came with the reloading setup I bought from a family member. Your oil comment peaked my curiosity so I went looking for the instructions and the only mention of oil I can find is:

"Never apply oil or any lubricant to the pivots or bearings; this will lower the accuracy of the scale."

Am I missing something (I'm still fairly new to reloading)? What scale do you have and where do you put the oil?

  3. I don't have the polished striker but have considered picking it up so I could keep the stock part as spare in my parts kit.

I do have the titanium striker indicator with the -10% striker spring. With a Springer trigger (~2.5lbs.) on my M40 I could not tell the difference. Maybe it would be more noticeable with the stock trigger.

  4. As long as you use mixed brass you will get more fluctuation than if you sort brass by headstamp. I sort my 9mm and I load to 1.13 with the same bullets you are using. Mine only varies from 1.129-1.131. Sort your loaded rounds and see if the numbers are pretty close within a given headstamp.

As for Weather and PF. There are a lot of threads on here about that. But suffice it to say TG is temp sensitive so as it gets hotter your PF will come up just a little. It won't be a huge difference but it will come up. Chrono your loads as the seasons change just to see what they are doing in any possible temp you might shoot a match in.

Guess I'm a little uninformed...how does the headstamp affect OAL? The seating die reamins the exact same distance from the shell plate no matter what the brass is. You may have more projectile engagement into the case, but isn't the OAL the same?

    just askin.............

My understanding is that different head stamps (Speer, Remington, etc...) have different case lengths.

Like you, I've wondered why the OAL would not be the same and the only thing I can think of is the longer brass touches the die and prevents the bullet from going deeper.

  5. First Saturday in April we will have a Special Classifier in San Antonio, TX. The Bullethole Range.

    Steven,

Do you have a link to the club so I can look up start times, match fees, etc.? I found this The Bullet Hole but was not able to find any details (under USPSA Club I clicked on BPSC). Did I overlook it?

I just joined USPSA this week and will be traveling through San Antonio on that very day. It would be great to shoot a classifier.

  6. I was reading through this old thread, Here, regarding powders and their performance variances at different temperatures.

It was stated that "Clays gets faster as the temp gets higher".

Does this mean that pressure increases as well? If you are loading on the upper end could have a kaboom due to a hot, sunny day?

  7. I'm at the end of my first pound of Clays.

How far down does everyone let their hopper run before adding a new batch of powder?

    IMAG0510.jpg

During my last reloading session I randomly checked the drops and all was ok, but...

Do you just add new powder on top of the previous batch or would you dump this remainder into the new batch and mix them together?

  8. so is the key word or words here dislodged & dropped?

To me, this sounds like one (dislodged)is ejected or falls from pouch?

The second (dropped) is the common everyday fumble at reload. OR is it an awareness issue? Say while running the mag ejects from pouch and the shooter is completely unaware?

hmmmm... I only ask cuz its bound to happen sooner or later

    JayTray,

It's always a PE if a loaded ammunition feeding device falls out of a carrier (or a pocket) whether the shooter is aware of it or not.

If you fumble the mag you've grabbed for the reload it needs to be picked up to avoid the PE.

    Thanks for the link Steve.

  9. At a recent match the following occurred:

Toward the end of a stage the shooter performed a slide lock reload; it was the final shooting position. As the shooter drew a fresh mag for the reload he dislodged the second mag and it fell to the ground (unnoticed by the shooter and the SO).

Since it was the final shooting position and it occurred during a reload, should a procedural have been given (had the SO been aware of the dropped mag)?

Here are two applicable excerpts from the rulebook. I'm not aware of anything in the Rule Addendum addressing this (since I'm yet to finish reading it  ).

Page 16 (Examples of Procedural Errors)

    n. Any time a loaded ammunition feeding device

(magazine, speedloader or full moon clip) is dropped

from the carrier during a course of fire.

    4. Ammunition Carrier Notes:

    1. A three (3) second procedural penalty will be assessed any

time a loaded ammunition feeding device (magazine,

speedloader or full moon clip) is dislodged and falls out of the

carrier during a course of fire. Dropping a loaded ammunition

feeding device during a reload is not a procedural as long as the

competitor does not leave ammunition behind.

  10. Never ran into an SO that was smoking while SOing. That being said- if a shooter is willing to breathe the crap the comes out of his gun... a little 2nd hand smoke from a cigar or cigarette isn't a big deal IMO. FWIW I don't smoke either and don't care for them. Nonissue- no way SO interference.

Personally I prefer the smell of the crap coming from my barrel over cigarette/cigarette smoke. :D
