  1. How many times do I have to say this, the WSSC isn't a local match. It should be in a location where everyone can attend. California isn't one of those places.

I agree, for what little it's worth. Put the matches somewhere that's kinda central, kinda accessable. California and Florida sure aren't. I'd like to shoot one but both locations ensure that ain't happening. I am signed up for the NSSF Rimfire "World" Championship in Arkansas. They picked a location that's actually somewhat "central". A 12 hr drive and four nites in the finest Motel 6 in Ft Smith but do-able while a California or Florida location is in the "ain't gonna happen" category. I can't be the only one.

  2. We need to encourge young, new shooters to try out steel challenge if we expect to grow it ...

Seems to be what NSSF is (successfully) doing with what was the Ruger Rimfire Challenge...

  3. I can shoot Outer Limits "as designed", it just ain't pretty, and it's a match killer.

Guys who move well think Outer Limits is great, it puts "out of contention" anyone who doesn't move well regardless of how good their technique is.

Your "insights" remind me of the single stack / wide body hi-cap transition in USPSA. Yes, I was shooting USPSA way back then. I fondly remember the rationalizing that with "proper re-loading technique" the single stacks were competitive with the high capacity guns. We know how that turned out...

When I want to shoot "run and gun" I'll shoot USPSA. Otherwise NSSF and any Bowling Pin shoot I can find is where my dollars are going to be spent. The PSA Shootout and a few others are on my bucket list too. You don't have to shoot bullseye (which I dislike) to not need to run to place well.

  4. Outer Limits is one of the most important stages in a match because it tests skills the others don't.

Like what? Testing how fast you can run between boxes? Sorry but I dis-agree. Isn't Steel Challenge supposed to be about shooting steel fast? Then they have a stage that adds 10 seconds to my total time because I don't limp fast enough? No amount of practice or shooting skill will make that up. My solution is to shoot NSSF Rimfire Challenge matches and give shooting Steel Challenge less priority than bathing my cat...

I see that for the NSSF Rimfire Challenge "World Championship" they will NOT use any steel challenge stages or replicas of them so we'll have an even playing field with stages new to everyone. A move I endorse. I'm entered and spending my bucks there, and at the other NSSF Rimfire Challenge matches I can make and NOT shooting Steel Challenge.

  5. Here is my luck at the match when shooting Open Rimfire Pistol. Scope rail screws were properly torqued and loc-tited. Screws eventually just pulled out of the aluminum sleeve that covers the barrel on my 22/45 Lite. Poor design and well known problem.

A friends did the same. Only one I've seen do it and I assumed it was due to him being a bit mechanically challenged. Drilled and tapped the barrel to accept 8-40 screws. The middle hole you can drill (and tap) deeper into the steel above the chamber. There's no steel to aluminum "air gap" there. I don't think it's coming off again.

  6. I think the best pins are the titanium S&W pins. The ones I've gotten lately (last couple yrs) have measured between .492 and .495 and that length seems to work just fine. S&W pins got a bad rep because they were sending guns out with "short" pins. Pins that were mid .480s and those were a problem. If I was going to pick a "best " set-up it would be Apexs' light firing pin spring (from the competition kit) and a S&W pin. Of course YMMV.

  7. Is that really an intelligent suggestion? If you get a defective gun, sell it to some other sucker and make it his problem? Let's all keep quiet about the problem, take the "hit" on cost from buying a dog product and buy something else?

How about we get SW to ship decent quality products which they are completely capable of doing?

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON A NEW SW:

Just to summarize, here are the gross defects to look out for:

    1) Barrel not straight. You can often just eyeball the "ribs" and see if they align with the frame, but another sure sign is if the rear sight is cranked all the way to one side of the other.

    2) Drag marks on the sides of the hammer.

    3) Forcing cone chewed up. Open the cylinder and inspect the end of the forcing cone for gouging with a file. Also check for the end being flat/square and not rounded off from filing.

    4) Side plate not fitted. Run your finger around the seam where the side plate mates with the frame. I have seen plates so tight that the edge "ridges up" where it meets the frame. You don't want this.

    FEELER GAUGE CHECKS

    5) Check barrel/cylinder gap. For a while, they were all running .010 - .012" with one I saw at .015. Best range is about .004" - .008" with a limit of about .010".

    6) Check cylinder to breech face gap. Nominal range is about .062" - .064". Check all the way around (not just at the top) as some guns have spots which are not square.

Loves to hear himself talk.... too bad he's the only one.

  8. Buy a Glock.

I do own a Glock. SW revos are still my favorite guns as evidence by the fact the gun that resides in my nightstand is a 686+.

It's just sad that their production and quality has degenerated to the point that it is an anomaly when you see a new gun with no glaring defects.

Yep. buy a Glock. Listening to you whine about the same gun for 4(?) years is getting old.

  9. I don't care what others say, changing the rules to allow 8 rounds minor in USPSA was a bad move.

"Obsoleting" THE GUN (5" 625), that was discontinued what, at least 8 yrs ago, is a bad idea? Seems like it was about time. If S&W had produced a 6.5" 625 (which we lobbied for) would you be whining about it "obsoleting" the 5" version? Want to change what's competitive? Change the "8 rds from a position" rule...

  10. 5" S&W 627 with a C-More and quad magna-ports.

    6" 10 shot 617 with a C-More.

Ruger 22/45 Lite with a C-More on a Rim Edge http://rimedge.com/ruger-mkiii-2245.html mount and a Mad Mac http://maddmacsprecisiontactical.com/lite-comp-2245l013.html comp.

S&W 15-22 with a C-More and Geissele trigger and non directional brake, 1/2 -28 version of this: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/147793/advanced-armament-co-aac-single-chamber-muzzle-brake-non-suppressor-mount-nsm-762mm-ar-10-lr-308-5-8-24-thread-matte?cm_vc=ProductFinding just so the timer can better hear it.

Mostly I've been shooting Ruger/NSSF Rimfire Challenge with the 22/45 Lite and 15-22. It's a more even playing field for those who don't have anywhere to (endlessly) practice the steel challenge stages...
