  1. I would bet that most shooters other than GM's have rarely shot an entire match in their current classification. This system will give shooters a higher classification than they can really shoot. Why because few can reproduce those scores on every stage at every match.

I'm not trying to start a fire here just pointing out a different way to look at this. You aren't really an A class shooter until you can produce an entire match at A class

So what? Everyone else is in the same position. The playing field is level. This is the trap you fall into obsessing about classifications.

  2. I heard back from Troy. His response was

OK to do, but as with USPSA, first run counts, second or subsequent runs not recorded in the scoring system.

I'll be revising the draft rules accordingly.

Common sense prevails? It happens so rarely...

  3. I understand this years NSSF Rimfire Challenge "Worlds" at Cavern Cove in Alabama is a one yr deal and they (NSSF) were looking at it (Worlds) being a west coast match next year.

I hope they (NSSF) see what's going on and say NEVER CALIFORNIA with laws like what they (California) just adopted. USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challenge, etc should do the same.

  4. I will have to look into that and see if any of the nssf stuff is close to here.

What upgrades have you done to your lites?

NSSF Rimfire Challenge is fun. I have more access to it than I do Steel Challenge plus you shoot stages no one has been practicing for years.

I have two Lites that are duplicates except one has a stainless comp and is sighted an inch high at 25 feet for bowling pins. It's a back-up gun at steel matches.

Tandemkross: smooth Victory trigger, Kanewolf Slingshot Kit, mag base pads

    Mags prepped

Rimedge: thumb rest and C-more mount

C-more with 16 minute dot module and Limcat glare shield

Volquartsen: MKII hammer and bushing, sear, disconnector, MKII competition bolt, mainspring housing with std spring,

    Tactical Solutions extractor

    Powers Custom A2 firing pin

Pachmayr 1911 grips trimmed to fit

MaddMacs #2245L013 comp, aluminum or stainless depending...

Barrel crown cut to 11 degrees

    LCI removed, slot left open

Weighs 29 oz with aluminum comp, w/out mag

I like how they turned out. They swing fast, have little dot movement, and are extremely reliable which is a bigger deal than many realize..

The downside is they don't leave me any excuses...

  5. I want to start shooting with my son and teaching him pistol basics and get in to some steel shooting. I'm tired of him playing video games.

I want to build us a couple of pistols we can compete with and can't decide if either of the models I have already are what I should get a second of and build from there, or should I get us 2 new Ruger lites or possibly buck marks?

Ruger Lites or Buckmarks are both good choices. I shoot NSSF Rimfire Challenge with Ruger Lites because they're light and I like its' grip angle best. There's lots of stuff available for both to get a set-up you like.

  6. ...You should also have the chamber reamed...

    +1

I've reamed the chamber in several finicky 41's with a SAAMI spec ("sport") finish reamer. It really improves how they function.

    There are recoil buffers: http://www.brownells.com/handgun-parts/recoil-parts/recoil-buffers/smith-wesson-model-41-buffer-sku071000011-302-1410.aspx

It says to change it every 1,000 rds ... Yikes, I'd need to buy a new one every 2 weeks!

Once you figure out what recoil spring you need they hold up pretty well.

  7. NSSF Rimfire Challenge does well with an 11 rds per string limit... Even with 7 plate stages.

Wouldn't the 10+1 round limit in NSSF rimfire Challenge more likely be due to the fact that the majority of the guns only have 10 round mags?

My pistols have 11 rd mags for 11+1. 10 rd and 25 rd mags for rifle and I could use a 50 rd drum for 50 + 1 but the per string limit is still 11 rds. Scholastic Steel has the same 11 per string. Being time based, same as Steel Challenge, if you need more than 11 rds you might be better off saving the ammo for practice... It is rare to see anyone "shooting empty".

I don't get to shoot Steel Challenge as often as NSSF Rimfire Challenge (and then it's usually an "outlaw" match) but when I do I don't see shooters burninig 20 rds per string. Most seem to figure out there's a point of diminishing returns. Is your experience different?

  8. That's going to make for a lot stupendously high scores at level 1 matches .... :)

...make it simple across the board and say there is no longer any limit to the number of rds a competitior can load in their mags. If a Production shooter wants to step to the line with 18/19 rds in their CZ Shadow that's fine .....

ok, but if someone is using 18 or 19 rds per string they're on their way to a "stupendously high score" anyway. An 11 rd (or pick a number that would be reasonable for the division) rds fired limit would encourage hitting something vs just burning ammo.

NSSF Rimfire Challenge does well with an 11 rds per string limit... Even with 7 plate stages.

  9. This seems like another rule that could (should?) be changed. Leave the mags alone. Set a max number of rds that can be fired per string. As an example, 11. 10+1. Fire a 12th rd and 30 seconds is your time. Got a mag that holds 50? Who cares? Get after it, but fire a 12th rd and you're time is 30 seconds. This is probably too simple...

  10. In EzSteel you set up an event and within that event you have matches (Main, Rimfire Pistol and Rimfire Rifle).

Per rule 8.1 a person who has been disqualified may not shoot during the remainder of the event.

Consider your local monthly match (which is actually an event) and you're shooting Open (main match) and RFPO (rimfire pistol match). Typically we shoot the two guns at the same time. Now suppose you accidentally drop your RFPO gun while removing it from the case. Under Rule 8.2.1.2 you're automatically DQ'd from the event. This means you can't complete the match with your open gun.

I don't know what EzSteel says but after reading the SCSA Rules another 19 (or so) times it seems:

We shoot a "Match". In that "Match" are "Events". The "Events" are "Center Fire Pistol" and "Rimfire Pistol". in these "Events" there are "Divisions". See A.2 and A.3.

Note that we have a "Match Director" (NOT an Event Director) and Section 2 is "General Match Rules".

It seems there are "Match" DQs and "Event" DQs.

It seems clear (8.1 specifies "Event" NOT "Match") that an "Event" DQ in "Rimfire Pistol" does not affect you're shooting "Center Fire Pistol" and a "Center Fire Pistol" DQ does not affect you're shooting "Rimfire Pistol". Any scores completed before the "Event" DQ stand.

8.3 seems to deal with "Match" DQs (drugs and behaviour mostly) as does 8.2.1.4.

The wording isn't as bad as I thought once you get the context right but it could use some cleaning up.

Maybe this helps, maybe it's confusing. Maybe this will help the discussion of liking or not liking what it says.
