  1. I'm not trimming for accuracy or uniformity. I'm shooting 3006 in my M1 garand. Trimming is for safety and function only. You can't have a long neck that goes into the freebore as the case will stick and won't be ejected. The file trim die will usually take off about .020" more than normal maximum lenght. I can actually shoot and size the same cartridge several times before it needs retrimming. Plus I am using the X Die to minimize stretch. I can't say for sure how I am able to get away with this, but the stretch must be slow enough not to matter on one resize as I measure each case before resizing (after shooting them) and they usually will pass for several firings before needing metal cut.
  2. I still want to use the file die as it quick and easy to insert the cartridges into the shell holder. The Lee cutter might work. The only problem would be that it looks like it only works for a deprimed case. I prefer to trim before resizing as I am using the Dillon 650 progressive and resizing first would just add another step. I guess I could grind off the bottom part of the Lee and just use the shaft as an inside neck guide, chuck up the whole assembly in a drill bit, and then run it down against the case in the file die. There would probably be enough pressure on the case in the die to keep it from rotating. What about some of the other cutters out there. Are there any with a short inside mandrel and a wide cutter head that would chuck up in a drill.
  3. I am using the RCBS file die to trim cases. The Dillon case trimmer would be nice but I can't afford the investment. Does anyone know of a 'cutter' that I can buy for an electric drill that I can use with the file die?
  4. You're right. I found the large powder bar in the original box. Been there some 8 years. Installed it. It seemed to go up to 56 grains of IMR 4895 when fully open. More than enough for 30-06. Now I just need the conversion plate kits.
  5. So I buy the large powder bar and install it in the original powder measure that I use for pistols. Is that correct.
  6. I want to start reloading rifle cartridges on my 650. I need to drop about 50 grains of IMR 4895. a stick powder. Would the stand Dillon powder dispenser be able to handle this. I hear that there is a larger bar for the standard powder dispenser, is that true. If so would the above powder work. Also hear about a magnum powder dispenser. I take it that is a whole different dispenser and how much can it throw. Will the stick powder be a problem. Next question regards the powder die insert, the one that usually puts the bell mouth on the pistol cases. For rifle I typically don't flare the cases. Are the rifle drop tubes designed to put no or little flare, or do they flare and you just back out the die so it doesn't flare much.
  7. Thanks for the info. I'm going to order the kit from dillon and give it a try. Just finished loading 1000 rounds of 40S&W and did it in three evenings. With single press loading of the m1 that would have taken me 3 weeks.
  8. Any problem with using RCBS or Redding Dies? Are you using an final crimp die? I don't seem to have the bulge problem with my carbine. Brass comes out good and reusable.
  9. Is anyone loading the 30 Carbine on the 650. Its a skinny tall case, I'm wondering if it tips easy and has trouble lining up in the dies.
  10. Its perfectly clean. Wave wasker is okay. I just flipped the disc over to the other side and it started working fine. dillon says there is no side up, but one side seems to work better than the other.
  11. Having a problem with the primer setup. Loading small pistol. The cam that recocks to rotate the primer wheel will hangup on the downstroke and not recock. A little bit of finger pressure and it snaps back. Any ideas.
  12. Whats the best case lube out there and the easiest to use. How do you clean it off a finsihed round - want to progressive reload so the lube would be on the finished round.
  13. So on the 650 do I have to remove the case feeder and feed each round in by hand. Thats the only thing that makes sense as I can't see putting lubed cases in the case feeder. How do you get the lube off the finished round. Do you clean each one by hand or tumble them in media.
  14. Is anyone loading the 30-06 on their dillon 650 and if so can you give some details. Can you use the automatic case feeder. Do you prelude the cases by hand or use a lube die. Do you use the same powder bar or is there a bigger one for rifles. How much 'uhmf' do you have to put into the handle. Resizing 3006 in my single stage press takes some handle force. I could imagine doing it with all the other stations in operation at the same time. But single press loading is just taking too damn long.
  15. I am using the 650 press and have a LEE Factory Crimp Die on the final stage. Every cartridge I load will drop into the barrel chamber and bottom out just fine. The next thing I will try is to polish the ramp and the interior of the chamber, especially the top interior. Then I was thinking of load a round really long, no powder or primer, and see how it chambers. Then keep lowering the bullet in 0.005" increments. I'll have the slide back on its slide catch, and load one round in the mag, then release the slide catch lever. This is when it usually jams. I want to see if I can find a LOA that makes the jamming go away. Any other ideas.
  16. Yes, I kept the original barrel and agree that it will chamber anything. But since I reload I want to keep my brass as long as possible with over stretching it and the any smileys I usually throw away. I just use the pistol for the range so thought it worth a try. I thought I was buying the 'best' barrel on the market, at least if you rate them by cost. The barrel is very accurate and I often get four or five bullet holes that look like a clover leave. But I am dissappoint on the feeding issue. I took a stone and broke the edge from the 10am to 2 pm position, but that didn't help much. I think Barsto could have engineered this better, maybe just a little more relief at the 6'o'clock position and may just a slightly larger chamber. I don't know if they all are like this, but maybe someone has found a solution in terms of bullet and LOA and or some minor dimensional changes.
  17. My new Barsto barrel in my G23 has great accuracy and the shell are coming out with little dimensional change. But my problem is getting my reloads to feed. I keep getting jams as the cartridge enters the chamber out of the magazine, 45 degree angle that jams an won't close until I pull back the slide a little by hand and let it go. I am shotting the 165Gr Rainers. I tried loading short but no help. Is anyone shooting with a barsto, and can you share you bullet type and LOA.
  18. My Dillon 650 is dragging on both up and down strokes. Its not the shell plate. Its either the shaft or the pivots. I've oiled everything with light weight gun oil, there's plenty of lube on everything. But no real improvement in the drag. Press is 14 years old and has loaded a lot of rounds. Any ideas or recommendations.
  19. Anyone got some pet loads for 165Rainers with Titegroup in 40sw. Looking for something midpower, nothing too hot, but close standard factory ammo.
  20. Anyone know an economical source of 240 to 250 gr jacketed bullets for the 45 colt. I want jacketed and not plated.
  21. The Barsto barrel is sensitive to long LOAs. I would only load 50 at a time and test for failures to feed if you extend the LOA.
  22. How do you get the cylinder off the ejection rod. His hasn't been cleaned in years and its kind of sticky rotating.
  23. Meeting a friend tonite at the range and he wants to remove the cylinder from his S&W police 38 revolver. I don't know the exact model but it looks like something from the 1940's. Does anyone know how to remove the cylinder. Usually its a matter of unscrewing the ejection rod but I've seen them with both left and right hand threads. Not much to go one I know, but any suggestions would be appreciated.
  24. Yes, I know about conversion kits and have them for the 9mm. Understand about the shellplate, powder charger, etc. None of this is a problem and I have done it before. My question is just about the case feeder drop tube and how it relates to the pivoting feed peice. There doesn't appear to be enough room to move the drop tube UP higher enough so the pivoting piece can pull out the case. I am specifically asking about that issue.
  25. Doesn't the SD take special, ie only Dillon made, dies? Are there any 3rd party dies that fit from other manufactuers.
