Brass costs the same, bullet costs the same, primer costs the same.

Reloading cost of major vs minor is due to needing more powder.  The typical $30 per pound of powder amounts to less than half a cent per grain.

I think you want validation that shooting open minor is a fantastic idea.  It isn't.

But if it works for you, who cares what a bunch of keyboard warriors like me have to say. You do you.

I said commercially available. I.e., factory ammo. Factory 9mm Major. Factory .38 Super Comp. Obviously reloading mitigates the cost difference. Have you tried buying a whole new reloading setup lately? It's borderline unobtainium.

    What exactly stresses you?

That Major ammo is WAY less commercially available in a time when ALL ammo is more difficult to find & expensive? Hence my comments on reloading.

With few exceptions, none of us are ever going to win an area match or even a sectional. Most of us will top out with class or category "wins".  Conversely, many of us want to improve.  That is why we train.  Standing in a rock pit for 5 hours for 3 minutes of shooting isn't that exciting to me..  It is the process of attempting mastery of a difficult skill that drives the competitors.

If  you have decided that you are content being a poor USPSA shooter at the bottom of your division (nothing wrong with this btw), buy a pallet of the cheapest remanufactured crap ammo that you can find and don't even bother reloading. Because reloading really is not fun and will not make any difference for you at this point

I mean, wow. Nowhere did I say I was content to suck. Just that I'd rather not stress over Major/Minor if it's not going to be that big of a deal in getting wins or not. I'm still dry firing and practicing with the intention of improving.

You might find that even after you start reloading, you still prefer to just shoot minor because it’s easier to load, easier to shoot, and you can shoot the same ammo in all your 9mm pistols and PCCs without any worry.

I've been debating in my head what to buy for my next gun & struggling with the Major/Minor thing. Accepting that I'll never be a serious competitor & am doing it for fun has allowed me to realize shooting Minor isn't a big deal. I'm currently D class in Limited. Shooting Major wouldn't make the difference in winning a match...

  5. I'm seriously thinking about buying a CZ Czechmate, which would allow me to shoot Open Minor until I am able to get set up for reloading and switch to Major. I'm shooting for fun over being competitive - at least beyond my local matches. So, knowing I'll never win a Section or Area match, why not shoot Minor?

I switched to 11 lbs recoil spring and +500 rounds later I have not experienced it again.

My discussions with CZ Custom indicate the 11# spring is ideal. I'm personally having issues with my SP01 ACCU Shadow not fully returning to battery, and will be having CZC look at it next week. Will see if they advise something other than the 11# spring.

  7. I find this very topic of great interest. I too see the mag limits in Production to be fun-sucking arbitrary idiocy. Through my first 6 months of shooting USPSA, I choose Limited m i n o r, strictly so I didn't have to make 3-4 mag changes. My first classification ended up D, and so far, I'm fine with staying in Limited. If Production ever changes the rules, I'll reconsider. Until then, A fudgecicle nobody but a few crayon chewers and winder likkers want for me.

More reloads or having to buy a few more mags isn't what's killing Production.  If that was the case, Production would have died the minute the AWB expired in 2004 because people would have just jumped to Limited.

    But they didn't.

To follow up on this, CO also wasn't an option when the AWB sunset. Personally, I have minimal experience shooting with a dot. So I have to choose, as you say, buying extra mags and mag pouches, and doing  extra reloads for no reason, or milling the slide of my $2k gun not knowing if I'll ultimately like it, or shooting Limited.

I'm not trying to argue here. I'm explaining my personal experience. I'd rather be shooting Production, where I would not have to compete against Major scoring. But I also have zero interest in doing extra mag changes per some arbitrary rule. To me, Production means just that. Shoot it as it's sold. Almost no modern guns come with 10 round magazines anymore. If that rule was a reaction to the AWB, it should have been changed almost 20 years ago. It's fine if you disagree.

And yes, I'm new to the sport. A sport that has stagnant membership. Shouldn't the goal be to figure out why people are leaving after a short amount of time and try to see what would make them stay? As noted, I really enjoy this sport. I'm seriously struggling with the decision of buying something next summer to shoehorn into a division that I will enjoy. Isn't that a problem? Shouldn't USPSA be concerned that a new shooter that loves the sport may find something different because of the goofy rules?

You just started in this sport but you got all the answers on how to fix it.

    LOL get in line

The fact that I'm willing to be non-competitive shooting 9mm in Limited rather than shoot Production should say something.

Cool story. Way to live in the past.

Or one could just read the rules ahead of time and buy a few more magazines.  They're like the cheapest part of the sport.  Literally.

No. I have zero interest in making 3-4 mag changes per stage. It's stupid. It's antiquated Fudd BS. It's killing the division. Production used to be what, like the 2nd most popular division? Now? It's 5th. And falling fast. And your solution is "go buy some mags"? Lol, yeah. Way to just ignore the problem...

What are the goofy rules in production?

10 round mags. You can't show up to a match with an out of the box pistol, which usually comes with only 2-3 mags, and shoot Production. That makes zero sense. The easiest solution is to just get rid of the limit all together. Or, if 141mm is okay for CO, it should be okay for Production too.

  13. Hi. I started USPSA beginning of this year & have shot 7 matches so far. Got my wife to try at the last one this past weekend. Currently shooting a CZ Custom SP01 ACCU Shadow in limited because of the goofy rules for Production. I'm looking hard at a new gun next summer, so considering Carry Optics and possibly even Open, but aren't set up for reloading, so looking for info & ideas.
