Rio Salado: Practical Long-Gun Matches In May

Recommended Posts

Here are the practical long-gun events we have scheduled this month at Rio Salado (Mesa, AZ):

Tactical .22 Rifle Match: Tuesday May 9th & 23rd
Registration opens at 4pm, with first shots shortly thereafter. Location is the Smallbore Range right behind the Activity Center. The rules are simple: Targets are reactive steel - shoot them per the stage briefing, fastest combined time (+penalties for misses) wins. Pretty much any .22 rimfire rifle is OK - the most popular guns are AR15-clones and Ruger 10/22s. We have two divisions: iron sight and optical sight. Now that .22 ammo is more available, this is a match you won't want to miss.  Scoring is done on paper, so no pre-registration is required.

3-Gun (Multi-Gun) Match: Saturday May 13th
We are on summer hours, so sign-in runs 7-8:30am, with first shots at 7am. New shooters should come in time to attend the New Shooter Orientation at 7:30am before they shoot. Our usual format is 3 short-range rifle, shotgun and/or pistol stages, plus 1 long-range rifle stage. Bring 150 rounds of rifle ammo, 50 shotgun birdshot (#6 or smaller), and 50 rounds of pistol ammo. Pre-registration opens at 3pm on the preceding Tuesday at the PractiScore website.

We are fortunate to have four very generous sponsors for our monthly match: Carbon Arms provides "loaner" shotshell caddies for competitors to try, and they donate a $100 gift certificate. VLTOR donates two of their excellent AR15 rifle stock kits. LUTH-AR send us one of their fine MBA-series rifle stocks. KE Arms provides a gift certificate each month. All prizes are distributed by random draw from the list of competitor who finish the match. With typical attendance around 75 shooters, your odds of winning something nice are pretty good.

Tactical Shotgun and Pistol Caliber Carbine Match: Thursday May 18th
Registration starts at 4pm, with a new shooter orientation shortly thereafter. The match format is four practical scenario-based stages similar to what you would encounter at a 3-Gun match, except that you only need to bring one gun - you choose either shotgun or pistol caliber carbine. There will be separate divisions for shotgun (Open, Limited and Pump), centerfire carbine (Optic and Iron) and .22 rimfire carbine (Optic and Iron). Any tactical shotgun suitable for 3-gun competition will work well in this match, or you can shoot a pistol caliber carbine (straight walled pistol calibers only please) or even a .22LR rifle. Scoring is done on paper, so no pre-registration is required.

Red Mountain Action Rifle Match: Sunday May 21st
Registration opens at 12:30pm. This is a rifle-only match run over the same course of fire as the morning pistol match; maximum 60 yards, high-speed/low-drag, four run-n-gun stages. The equipment divisions accommodate iron and optical sights, rimfire rifle, centerfire rifle and pistol caliber carbine. Bring 150 rounds of ammo. Scoring is done on paper, so no pre-registration is required.

With the phenomenal popularity of our recent Run-n-Gun Rifle-Pistol match, we are going to experiment with a new 2-GUN OPTION at our monthly 3-Gun match (Saturday May 13th). Folks who are interested in multi-gun action shooting, but who don't own a shotgun, can come and shoot our entire 3-Gun match with only a rifle and a pistol (no shotgun required).

When signing up for the match, you will have the option to select whether to shoot 3-Gun (rifle/shotgun/pistol) or 2-Gun (rifle/pistol only). Effectively there will be 10 separate divisions, so you will only be shooting against competitors with comparable equipment.

At some stages you will find TWO written stage briefings - one titled "3-Gun" and one titled "2-Gun". You MUST shoot according to the stage briefing pertaining to the division you have declared (3-Gun vs. 2-Gun). Moreover, different targets may have to be engaged by different guns depending on your division, so be sure to read the briefing carefully instead of just copying what your buddy did.

Other than the number of guns used, all match rules remain the same.

Our 3-Gun competitors should rest assured that nothing in the match format will change from what you have come to enjoy, and you will not be competing against any of the 2-Gunners. Although we will all shoot concurrently, the divisions will be scored like separate matches.

Sign-up opens today at 3pm on PractiScore.

The new 3-Gun/2-Gun format was a big hit. Of the 92 total competitors, 52 shot traditional 3-Gun and the other 40 shot 2-Gun divisions. Everyone seemed to have a great time. We will be continuing this format at least through the summer, and monitoring for continued interest in the 2-Gun option.

Thanks as always to our awesome sponsors: Carbon Arms, VLTOR, LUTH-AR and KE Arms. Prizes have been distributed by random draw, and the winners notified.

The results are up on PractiScore, and here is the match video:
