GIO
I can pick up a Heavy barrel 308 action put it in a BC stock with CDI DBM floorplate for aroung $800. Question is: Is the HOWA action worth building on or should I just go REM 700? The rem base HB is around 475, still need a stock and I really want a detachable magazine. I already started this game one time. Ended up selling a nice base 700 to BIGDAWG so here i go again. (unless you're tired of that stick rich)
Avezorak
I have a stock .308 howa 1500 and I think its a very solid action. For stock availability and general easiness to get stuff for , you cant beat a 700 with a stick.
kgunz11
It's general consensus that it's a wise move to pass by the Howa. Inconsistency is the biggest factor, and the fact that they are imported is a close second. You'd be better off the find a Rem 700 donor action for any kind of build. You might get a good Howa, you might not, but they will not exchange it if you don't. And when I say bad, I mean as in warped actions not fit for truing. This information comes to me from 2 of the more respected gunsmiths in the country. One of them wont even look at your Howa action.
GIO
Thanks KGunz. As always...the cheap way is not always/ever the best way. Rem is not a hallmark of quality but those 700's seem to do pretty well.
