Alliant E3

Just a quick summary of MY experiment with the new Alliant E3 powder.

WELL worn 1911 45, WW brass, Win. primers.

3.6gr. 718fps. avg. 101 spread 36 sd Wuss load, dribbled brass but still worked.

4.2gr. 790fps. avg. 81 spread 23 sd Wuss load

4.5gr. 848fps. avg. 75 spread 27 sd * Not bad.

4.9gr. 919fps. avg. 73 spread 23 sd Accurate.

5.1gr. 929fps. avg. 55 spraed 18 sd Fairly stout feeling.

Greatest thing since Clays? Probably not. But still worth playing around with.

SD lowers with increasing charge, whether loading density or pressure related, I'm not sure.

Probably density related.

**Use data at your own risk, I saw nothing scary from any of these loads, but, YMMV.**

Especially if you have a tighter, more youthful bore than the one I used for these tests.

AT 4.9gr. This stuff burned clean, shot soft, and was accurate.

Travis F.

PS. Alliant powder has no published data for anything other than 12ga.

(BTW - bullet data for above is for 230 grn?)

Well this is an OLD thread but when I checked the website tonight there is STILL no data on this powder for handgun use published on Aliant's site.

Have been helping a friend get started with .45 & E3 is one of the powders he bought; anyone have additional data or comments on E3? Thanks in advance,

D.C. Johnson
