Shooting Matches In Ny

Saw this on another forum and the reference to the USPSA jumped out at me. According to the person that posted it this was a letter sent to all IDPA clubs.

Attention Club Contacts,

Some match directors have brought to our attention a concern about clubs hosting IDPA matches in the state of New York. Due to the laws in the state of New York, non New York state residents traveling into the state for handgun matches may only do so if the match is sanctioned by the National Rifle Association. A non New York state resident traveling into the state to a match that is not NRA approved may face fines and jail time under New York Laws.

After speaking with the NRA, they have stated that they have no problem sanctioning IDPA matches but will only do so on a club by club basis. They will not issue a blanket approval of the sport. Some of you have stated that you have a letter blanket approving USPSA matches in the state. After speaking with Mr. Gilchrist, the NRA Director for Competitive Shooting, he stated that he was aware of the letter and that it was not a valid letter. You will need to seek sanctioning for those matches as well if your club also hosts that type of sport. We do not want anyone to get fined or jailed.

The form to obtain sanctioning is fairly short and simple to fill out. It is somewhat similar to the form that we use for Sanctioned IDPA matches. You must fill out the NRA form, include two copies of your match program and send it in to the address listed on the top of the NRA form. The match program needs to list:

Dates of matches

Location

Number of stages

Approximated round count

Start times

A statement saying that the match is being run by IDPA rules and guidelines

Any other pertinent information

This really is just the same stuff that you would list on a match flier or on your website. The NRA has informed me that they will sanction multiple dates on one form (monthly matches, etc.) for one calendar year. This will make it easy on the clubs to do.

We here at headquarters, will be posting this information and form on our website for your continued usage. Please take the time to complete the form and send it in. This will help protect your out of state competitors. We will also be placing a notice on the club listing page for New York State, advising competitors to contact the host club before crossing state lines to assure that they have received NRA sanctioning on their matches.
